Chapter 7: Investigation

When he didn’t respond and kept staring at her, Amie felt her palm becoming sweaty.

Did he find out something already?

She gave him the gift and covered up the room color. Everything should be fine.

Amie blinked, moving closer to him. She placed her hand right into his. "Come on, darling. What’s happening? Why do you look like that?"

Rauf schooled his features immediately.

If this was an act, he needed to find out. He shouldn’t give them a clue that he suspected anything.

He forced a smile at her. "Sorry, Mami. It’s the aftermath of the surgery."

Amie smiled at him. "Come on. I’ll make you feel good, but first, come and eat."

She pulled him away from the grey room towards the dining room.

The silence in the room was deafening as the maid came to drop the food on the table. There were no whispers from the maid like there used to be whenever he heard them drop his food.

He waited and watched as Amie commanded them to put their food on their plates.

Another thing he had been looking forward to was this meal with Amie. He was glad to finally be having a meal with her.

He picked up his cup and cheered. "Cheers to the good life."

Amie smiled. "Cheers to forever."

He placed the food in his mouth and paused.

Though the taste was better than what she had brought to him at the hospital, it was nowhere as good as the ones she had prepared for him while she was blind.

"Did you prepare this?"

He watched her tense. She looked around as if trying to find something before nodding excessively. "Yes, darling. Of course."

Rauf frowned.

What was with the darling?

She always called him Papi.

"Do you like it?" Her eyes were wide with expectation.

Rauf watched her fidget with her spoon.

She was hiding something.

He was silent for a few minutes before responding. "Of course, it tastes good."

He had to force himself to swallow the food as he took spoon after spoon by force.

As they dined, Amie tried to engage him in small talk. None of which interested him in any way.

They used to have fun talking together, but now her topics weren’t the ones that interested him.

"So, I’ll be going to a ladies’ hangout with my friends. And I’ll need to do some new shopping..."

As she spoke, he toyed with his food.

When did she start hanging out with friends and shopping?

"What do you think?" She asked, breaking him out of his thoughts.

Rauf nodded at her. "That’s fine. Do whatever you want."

Her company wasn’t as expected as it used to be.

After a while, Rauf stood up from the chair, losing interest in the rest of the dinner. "I’m okay."

Just as he stood up, Amie followed him.

She led him to a different bedroom with a smile.

She might have messed up some things, but she was certain she would never mess up this aspect.

This was something she was confident in. She only needed to lay with him once and she could claim to be pregnant with the Salvador heir.

Her life would be set for life.

And there would be no going back to the life of debts.

Rauf changed his clothes and changed into his nightwear. He lay on the bed, his eyes wide open, trying to figure out what was wrong.

This wasn’t the home he had envisioned, and getting his sight back wasn’t as exciting as he had expected.

Out of everything, he hadn’t wanted to interact with his wife more. He wanted to do everything they did when he was blind with open eyes.

Amie shrugged out of her dress, leaving her in her panties and bra. She wriggled onto the bed, placing her hand right on his chest.

Nothing.

Rauf didn’t feel anything at all.

Maybe it was due to the fact that he had usually used his senses more than his physical sight.

He turned her over, staying right on top, and Amie let out a laugh.

One that didn’t sound the way it should.

"What do you usually do for me whenever I can’t sleep?" he questioned, his eyes watching hers.

Amie coughed, her eyes moving slowly downward before snapping back right at him. "What don’t I do?" she answered. "You know I would do anything and everything for you."

"Hmmm..." Rauf responded.

She knew how to play games. He never knew she had this side to her.

Again, her hand moved up her chest. "Come on, darling. I’ve missed you so much."

Rauf closed his eyes, his hand moving slowly over her body.

There was no doubt.

This wasn’t the body he knew.

He pushed her off, suddenly losing the urge to rest or sleep.

"Darling," Amie choked out.

But he was already out of the room. His long strides took him to other places where the woman he supposed was his wife wasn’t in.

He might be blind, but the people around him weren’t.

Some of his guards had surely seen his wife. He moved towards his office. Thankfully, it was just as he had left it.

Even in better shape, as if someone had been taking care of it for him.

He pressed a long dial on his table, and one of his guards came running in.

"Boss." The guard looked around nervously.

He hadn’t expected his boss to start working immediately after he got his sight back. But he wasn’t surprised, as he had always been a workaholic. It was how he had made a name for himself out of nothing.

Rauf narrowed his gaze at him.

"What was my wife like when I was blind?" he asked.

Caught off guard, the guard looked confused.

Was he supposed to be speaking about the boss’s wife?

"I dare not comment on your wife, sir," he answered.

Rauf frowned.

Good.

It seemed the guards still feared him like they should.

"You can comment. I gave you permission to comment on my wife."

The guard shifted on his foot. Mrs. Salvador Snr had made a dangerous promise to whoever told him the truth.

And though she wasn’t here, everyone knew she had eyes and ears in the mansion. She basically knew everything that was going on.

Seeing that he made no move to speak, Rauf continued his questions.

"Are you going to speak or not?" His tone was final.

The guard fidgeted. This was the man she had feared and respected for years.

"Sir, there’s something you should know."
