The Mafia Lord Forgotten Bride
Chapter 31: Chris popped the question.
After a few persuasions from Chris and the continuous growling of her stomach, June accepted that he should order some food for them.
Chris went to order the food when her phone beeped.
It was from Andy.
’Can’t come in today. Trust you can handle everything."
Ever since she had treated Milo, Andy had started trusting her with more difficult tasks every day. It was nice to see someone believing in her.
She typed her response, ’Of course, sir.’
She placed her phone down the moment Chris came back into the office.
"Our order should be here soon." He said, jingling his phone at her to let her know he had made the order.
June smiled at him. Then she excused herself so she could arrange some of the things that would be needed for working before client start coming into the clinic.
By the time she was done, it was when their food was delivered. The delicious aroma of the food made it difficult for June to focus on anything other than the food before her.
She sat herself opposite Chris as she started eating.
At first Chris didn’t say a word, he was also eating and staring at how she devoured the food as if she was being pursued by someone else.
"Wow." He said, as he gulped from the bottle of water in front of him.
June only spared him a glance to see if he was okay before she resumed devouring her food.
"You know this is the first time I am seeing a woman eat so much. Not some sticking to just eating vegetables."
"Why would I eat just vegetables when I am not a vegetarian?" June asked, sincerely confused.
"Well, that’s true. But, I don’t know you that well to know if you’re vegetarian or not." He responded, sounding as if not knowing her hurt him in some kind of way.
June was about to reply him, when he continued. "But that can be rectified, right? There’s nothing wrong in getting to know you better now."
If it was before, June would have flaunt her wedding ring to any man who dared.as much glance her way. But she couldn’t call herself married now.
And she remembered she was supposed to be cuddling to Chris, so showing him the finger was totally wrong.
"Hmmm..."ashe hummed before turning to him. "I thought you didn’t care about me. You were absent for two days."
Shocked, Nick fixed his eyes on her. Then slowly, his lips curled into a wide smile. "Don’t tell me you missed me during those period?"
June rolled her eyes.
As if she had time to miss him. If it weren’t for the help she needed from him, she was certain she wouldn’t have known he didn’t come over
Then he turned serious all of a sudden. "Yeah. Something happened to me that kept me busy."
Again, June rolled her eyes.
Mafia business.
She wasn’t interested in knowing what it was. "I hope you are able to sort it out."
This time, Chris smiled widely. It was the most genuine smile June had seen on his lips. "Yeah. I found the most precious gift to me."
Then he continued eating.
Curiosity ate June up, as she took a smaller portion of her food now.
What could be the most precious thing to a guy who already had everything?
According to Ellie, he lacked nothing.
So, what could have made him smile so genuinely?
"You found a wife." She blurted out, the first thing that came to her mind.
Unexpectedly, Chris spat out the food in his mouth in the most unhygienic manner. Some of it flew to June’s face, but she wiped it off.
"I’m sorry," he started. "Your words took me by surprise. And to answer your question, no. I found something more precious: my sister."
June tried to rack her brain to remember if she had heard of a sister before.
Then she remembered Ellie saying something about the Mafia’s queen daughter.
"Congratulations." She wanted to sound genuine, but her words came out slurred.
Chris chuckled. "It’s okay. I’m sure you’ll find your mother someday, too."
The door to the clinic opened, stopping their conversation amidst confusion.
A man walked in pulling a dog with him. The dog moved back as if he didn’t want to be there, but the man pulled him forward.
When the dog’s eyes landed on June, it started barking in a more friendly manner at her.
The man looked up. "I think it likes you.’
June smiled widely at him. "Yeah, animals tend to like me." She responded. "So, what’s wrong with it?"
The man dropped the dog on the counter. "I don’t know, it suddenly stopped eating well. And I think it also started prefering its company alone."
June started checking its body as the man stood at a side waiting for them. His gaze haven’t got a minute left the dog at all. So, he barely knew Chris was standing beside him also watching how she took care of the dog.
Once she was done, she wrote down some prescriptions for the man, and gave him some of the medicine that were available at their clinic.
The man thanked her before leaving the clinic.
June was packing the tools she had used when the sound of clapping filled the room.
"That was brilliant, June."
Her cheeks turned red. "Thank you."
"Have you ever considered being a doctor?" The question popped out of nowhere.
Andy had also asked her that, but for now her answer remained the same. "I have other priorities for now "
"Your mother."
She nodded. Glad that the topic had come up without her asking, she took the bold step again.
"The only information I have about my mother was the address in the letter given to me. I don’t know her name or any other thing." She cast her glance to the floor. "I don’t think I am ever going to find her this way."
Chris frowned. He knew what it felt like to be missing someone dear to him, and he wanted June to feel the same way he was feeling.
"The address on your letter is the same address as my house."
June nodded. "Yeah. I told you the last time."
Chris closed his eyes as if he was lost in thought, then opened it back. "I really tried to think of who could be your mother out of those working in my place, but I couldn’t think of any one. And I really want to help you out."
June’s heart had started beating fast.
She couldn’t help but remain quiet as she waited for Chris to finish his speech on whatever he had to say.
Chris pinched his nose this time. "I would have asked you to give me the letter, to see if there’s something I can do about it. But I know that letter must be very important to you. You wouldn’t want to give it to anybody. Not especially a stranger like myself."
He was right.
There was no way June would give her letter to him, especially since he might not even come back. She might be a bit free around him, but she was still finding it difficult to trust him.
"Maybe I can bring the letter to work, and you can check it."
Chris thought about it, then he shook his head. "I don’t think that’s going to solve anything. You know what we’re going to do?"
His eyes were twinkling with mischief.
June waited but when he didn’t say a word, she asked. "What?"
"Do you work everyday or does your boss give you some sort of free time?"
"I always have the weekend off, but I have been working part-time on weekend."
Chris frowned at her. "You’re working part-time, too.
He looked judgemental and June looked embarrassed at that moment. "Some of us have responsibilities." Her tone sounded hard.
Chris chuckled, raising his hands up in surrender. "Sorry. I’m just saying you should rest some times. You look like you need it."
"I rest just fine." She responded.
For a few minutes, they were both silent glaring at each other as if daring each other to say any offensive words again.
At the end, Chris gave up with a slight chuckle. "Okay. Okay. It’s my fault and I am sorry. I didn’t mean to get you angry."
"I’m not angry." She replied, still glaring at him.
"Okay. Let’s forget about that. So, the reason I am asking about your break time is so you can follow me to the mansion..."
"What?" She screamed, earning a glare from Chris.
She had thought she had to come up with creative ways to ask him to take her to his mansion. But here he was asking her when she hadn’t even said a word.
Maybe Ellie was right.
They seemed to be nice mafia’s.
"You’re willing to take me to your mansion so I can find my mother?
Chris nodded. "I know the feeling of finding who’s been missing person and I want you to feel that way too."
Speechless, she opened and closed her mouth. Then she whispered. "Thank you."
