THE LAST KEEPER
Chapter 446: PHANTOMS OF N’FOLU
Sagiri stepped through the dark obsidian archway, entering a vast circular chamber of black glass. The floor was completely smooth, reflecting the dim silver light of the Five Relics pulsing in his veins.
Arranged in a wide circle around the room were thirteen towering stone pillars, each carved with the ancient crest of an N’folu clan head. In front of each pillar stood a dark silhouette formed from concentrated memory light.
These were the martial echoes of the past Keepers, the legendary leaders who had carried the Living Memory across thousands of years. They did not speak with words of hatred, but their sharp, glowing eyes were filled with the cold weight of ancient sorrow.
“You have passed the outer memory currents, young Keeper,” the central figure said, his deep voice echoing across the glass floor. “Now you must prove you can bear the martial burden of the thirteen lines.”
“I am ready to face the legacy of our clan,” Sagiri replied, shifting his feet into a low, balanced combat stance. “I did not come here to run from the past.”
“Every Keeper before you believed they were ready,” another shadow spoke from the left pillar, his cloak swirling with dark energy. “Yet every one of them cracked under the pressure, dying young and leaving our people unprotected in the dark.”
The central silhouette raised his hand, and twenty spectral black blades formed in the air around him with a sharp hum. In an instant, the memory echo shot across the chamber with blinding speed, launching a lethal barrage of sword strikes.
Sagiri did not flinch or retreat. He raised Nokai, executing the precise defensive rotations he had drilled thousands of times in the courtyards of Galka Academy.
The sound of clashing void blades rang through the chamber like iron bells. Sagiri deflected three strikes with his main blade, while the twenty orbiting blades around his own body intercepted the remaining attacks in mid-air.
Two more ancestral echoes moved in from his flanks, executing rapid thrusts with spectral spears. Their footwork was fluid and light, gliding across the glass floor with the legendary sand techniques of the ancient South.
Sagiri recognized the moves instantly, having studied the ancient treatises during his quiet evenings in the southern fortress of Thazir. But he did not try to match their southern speed alone, knowing that pure agility would leave his center open.
Instead, he combined the fluid footwork of the Sandshades with the heavy, unyielding iron defense of the Northern Kaya. He anchored his back foot firmly into the ground, catching the first spear on his forearm guard and turning his shoulders to redirect the kinetic force.
With a swift sweep of his leg, he broke their triangular formation and forced both figures to step back. The two spearmen recovered their balance quickly, their eyes widening in genuine respect as they circled his position.
“You do not fight like a traditional N’folu warrior,” the central echo observed, lowering his blades as he studied Sagiri’s balanced posture. “You mix northern iron discipline with our ancestral speed.”
“Our clan isolated itself from the world for centuries,” Sagiri answered, his voice firm and steady in the quiet room. “We hid our techniques and kept our secrets, until fear and suspicion tore our home apart from the outside.”
“The outside world has always been hostile to our blood,” the shadow replied, his eyes narrowing slightly. “The northern clans brought war to our gates, and the eastern leaders looked away when our people fell.”
“And yet, when I was wounded and near death, it was northern brothers who carried me to safety,” Sagiri said, looking directly into the shadow’s gaze. “It was an eastern healer who poured her lifeforce into my chest to keep my heart beating.”
He lowered Nokai slightly, letting the warm silver light of the Silver Mask shine across the entire chamber. The gentle radiance illuminated the faces of the thirteen pillars, softening the dark shadows around them.
“I will not hide our clan in the dark any longer,” Sagiri told the memory echoes. “I will use this knowledge to help build a united continent where no tribe has to live in fear of its neighbors.”
The thirteen ancestral figures stood in silence, looking at the young man who stood before them without a trace of bitterness in his heart. They had spent lifetimes carrying the burden of war, but in Sagiri, they saw the promise of true peace.
Slowly, the central figure lowered his hands, and the spectral blades hovering around him dissolved into soft silver sparks. He placed his right fist over his chest in the traditional warrior salute of N’folu.
“You carry a wisdom that none of us possessed in life,” the lead echo said, a faint, proud smile appearing on his face. “The Living Memory is yours to command, Supreme Chief.”
One by one, the thirteen silhouettes bowed their heads and dissolved into streams of golden-black light. The energy flowed smoothly into Nokai’s blade, settling into the core of Sagiri’s spirit and granting him full access to the Archive’s deeper vaults.
Meanwhile, on the frozen surface of Karokai Valley, Lady Kiana finished placing the last silver needle into the icy bedrock. Bright green and silver lines of energy connected the six points, forming a stable array on the ground.
Lira sat in the center of the formation, her hands resting on the cold stone as her emerald cellular energy pulsed in steady waves. Beside her, Kiuga, Kaka, Maita, Bukata, Zolinka, and Ulekai sat cross-legged with their eyes closed, locking their hands firmly together.
“The resonance bridge is ready,” Kiana announced, her silver void markings glowing brightly in the freezing mountain wind. “Focus your thoughts completely on Sagiri’s voice and presence.”
“Hold the line, everyone,” Kiuga said calmly, directing his mental focus into the center of the array. “We stay together and we bring our brother home.”
“I’m not letting him leave this world before we finish our academy matches,” Kaka added with a fierce grin, his grip tightening on Lira’s hand. “We swore an oath to walk through hell together.”
Marshal Salka and General Zafaru stood guard outside the circle, their keen eyes watching the surrounding ridgelines for any sign of collapse. They knew that the fate of the entire continent rested upon the strength of the young cadets sitting in the frost.
Kiana raised her hands and channeled the void frequency of the Sekana clan into the silver needles. A soft, humming beam of light rose from the array, piercing cleanly through the outer wall of the black crystal dome.
Back inside the deep Archive, Sagiri felt a sudden warmth brushing against his spiritual core. He turned toward the light, recognizing the familiar presence of Lira’s soothing aura and the steady minds of his squad mates.
At that exact moment, a sharp, cold tremor surged through his physical body on the surface above. The obsidian crystal on his skin was hardening rapidly, locking his joints and threatening to freeze his mortal heart forever.
“They are already outside the gate,” Sagiri whispered, steadying his breath as the cold stone began to weigh down his limbs. “I have to reach the final center before my mortal body completely turns to stone.”
With his hand firmly gripping the hilt of Nokai, Sagiri turned toward the final corridor, stepping forward into the deepest chamber of the Archive.
