THE LAST KEEPER
Chapter 445: RIVER OF DEAD GENERATION
Inside the deep dark space of the Archive, Sagiri stood on a narrow ledge of black stone. Below him stretched an endless, moving stream of white light and floating memory fragments.
This was the River of Dead Generations, the deep neural current where centuries of Southern history were stored. Every glowing ripple in the current held the thoughts, martial forms, and final moments of past Keepers who had carried the Living Memory before him.
The weight of all those stored memories pressed against his mind like a heavy iron vice. He could feel the mental exhaustion that had broken every Keeper before their eighteenth year, threatening to wipe away his own thoughts.
"Every Keeper before me stood in this exact spot," Sagiri said quietly, keeping his two feet locked in a stable Galka stance. "And every one of them was crushed by the sheer weight of what they tried to carry alone."
A sudden wave of bright memory light surged up from the stream, hitting his consciousness with immense force. In an instant, his mind was flooded with scenes of ancient battles, lost fortresses, and brutal desert wars fought thousands of years ago.
He saw the faces of ancient commanders shouting orders across sand dunes, feeling their panic as enemy lines closed in. He felt the cold shock of iron spears, the burning heat of desert suns, and the deep sorrow of warriors who never made it back to their tents.
The chaotic memories hit him one after another, trying to drag his mind into the endless noise of the past. His vision blurred, and a sharp, throbbing ache spread across his forehead as his thoughts began to scatter.
"Focus your mind, cadet," Sagiri told himself, using the harsh mental discipline taught by Marshal Salka in the northern training halls. "Do not fight the current. Sort the information and maintain your center."
He slowed his breathing and began organizing the incoming flood of data, treating it like the tactical battle maps he had studied with Kiuga. He separated the ancient weapon styles, geographical records, and combat strategies from the raw emotional trauma of the fallen.
He drew Nokai from his back, holding the dark blade horizontally before his chest. The silver veins along the steel began to glow with a calm, steady rhythm, matching the beating of his spiritual core.
Instead of letting the memories crash over him like an uncontrolled storm, Sagiri used the blade to guide the glowing stream into an orderly circle around the stone platform. The roaring noise in his ears began to quiet down into a steady, controlled hum.
He could feel the Five Relics inside his bloodstream settling down, their chaotic resonance finding a stable pattern through the discipline of his blade. He was not letting the past control him; he was taking command of the memory.
Meanwhile, leagues away on the frozen surface of the world, the rescue party reached the outer rim of Karokai Valley. The cold northern gale blew sharp snow across the rocky cliffs as the horses came to a sudden halt.
Down in the circular basin stood the massive dome of pitch-black spatial crystal. The smooth barrier reached high into the gray sky, sealing off the entire valley floor and humming with deep void vibrations that made the frozen ground tremble.
At the base of the crystal dome, titan serpent Zaira was coiled tightly against the black glass. Her thick armored scales were frosted with white ice, and low, anxious rumbles shook her massive chest as she nudged the barrier.
"Zaira!" Kaka shouted, leaping down from his warhorse and running across the frozen gravel toward the giant serpent. "Easy, girl! We found you!"
Kaka raised his heavy double-bladed battleaxe with both hands and swung it hard against the dark glass. A sharp ringing sound echoed across the frozen valley, but the axe bounced off without leaving even a faint mark on the surface.
The heavy impact sent a stinging shockwave up Kaka's arms, forcing him back three steps as his boots skidded across the ice. He shook his numb wrists in frustration, glaring at the dark crystal with fierce anger.
"Save your strength, Kaka," Kiuga called out, jumping down from his mount and walking quickly to his friend's side. "That dome is made of pure spatial void energy from Nokai. Brute force will only break your own weapons."
Kiuga knelt on the frozen ground, studying the geometric lines running through the base of the barrier. His sharp tactical mind quickly analyzed the flow of energy, noting how the crystal was anchored directly into the ancient bedrock below.
"He locked the perimeter so the spatial fractures wouldn't leak out and destroy nearby villages," Kiuga observed, his face tight with concern. "The seal is completely stable from the inside, but that means he has fully entered the core."
Lira ran up beside Zaira, placing both of her hands gently against the serpent's frozen snout. Bright emerald light flowed from her palms, warming the beast's cold scales and easing the tension in her massive body.
"How is his physical state, Lira?" Marshal Salka asked, walking forward with his hand resting on the hilt of his curved saber. "Can you sense his lifeforce through your cellular connection?"
Lira closed her eyes, holding the wooden shyflower pendant tightly against her chest as her aura pulsed. Faint green light flickered across the delicate wooden petals, vibrating in sync with Sagiri's distant heartbeat.
"His heart is only beating once every minute," Lira said, her voice shaking with worry as tears welled in her eyes. "His body is turning as cold and hard as stone. If he stays under that seal much longer, his organs will stop completely."
"Then we open a way in right now," Lady Kiana said, stepping past the horses and pulling down her white fur hood. Her dust-rose eyes were glowing with bright silver light as she approached the barrier.
She placed her bare palm against the smooth black glass, closing her eyes as she searched for the frequency of the Silver Mask. The dark crystal beneath her fingers responded immediately, sending ripples of silver light spreading across the surface of the dome.
"The relic inside his blood recognizes my presence," Kiana said, turning back to face the squad with quiet determination. "I can use the Sekana void technique to build a spiritual path through the barrier, but I cannot do it alone."
"Tell us what you need," General Zafaru commanded, stepping up alongside Master Sandshade Koru. "The entire Southern Host and Squad 25 stand ready to follow your lead."
"I need Lira's cellular aura to anchor his living pulse, and I need Squad 25 to lend their mental focus," Kiana explained clearly. "We will project our consciousness directly into the Archive to pull his mind back to the surface."
Back inside the deep void of the Archive, Sagiri stood at the far edge of the stone platform. The glowing river of memories had smoothed out into a quiet, reflective path of silver light beneath his boots.
He looked ahead and saw a massive archway made of dark obsidian pillars, marking the entrance to the deepest chamber of the Living Memory. Beyond the archway lay the concentrated core of the N'folu clan's ancient history.
Sagiri took a deep breath, tightening his grip on Nokai as he prepared to step forward. He knew the hardest part of the trial was waiting for him just beyond that dark threshold.
