THE LAST KEEPER

Chapter 433: Lira’s vengeance

The heavy iron door of the western research wing collapsed inward under Bukata’s shield charge, slamming into the tiled floor with a hollow, echoing ring.

A blast of stale, frigid air rushed out of the corridor ahead, thick with the sharp stench of formaldehyde, bitter botanical venoms, and burnt copper.

Kiuga stepped through the breach first, his twin short-swords raised in a low guard as his sharp eyes scanned the flickering fluorescent tubes overhead.

"Watch the ventilation grates and high piping," Kiuga whispered, reading the tactical layout of the hallway. "They have chemical purge nozzles built directly into the ceiling."

Behind him walked Lira, her emerald healing robes brushing the frosted floor as her breath hitched in her throat.

Every stone, every iron pipe, and every chemical scent in this corridor was burned into the darkest corners of her memory.

This was the subterranean genetic laboratory of Project Lava IX—the cold, windowless hell where she had been strapped to steel tables as a child.

"Are you ready for this, Lira?" Kiuga asked gently, glancing back at her pale face without lowering his guard.

Lira gripped the edges of her sleeves, her hands trembling for a brief second before her emerald cellular aura flared brightly to life around her fingers.

"I have spent seven years running from this place in my nightmares," Lira whispered, her voice hardening with iron resolve. "I am not leaving until every cage is broken and every child is free."

Maita scouted ahead along the polished walls, signaling clear as they approached the central operating amphitheater.

Inside the vast domed chamber, dozens of tall glass cryogenic vats bubbled with thick, glowing green nutrient fluids.

Floating inside the vats were young children. orphans stolen from southern and western border villages bound by steel restraints with dark alchemical runes burning into their skin.

Seeing their small, pale faces submerged in the toxic brew struck Lira like a physical blow, sending a surge of righteous fury burning through her blood.

Near the central dissection platform stood Chief Alchemist Varkis, dressed in bloodstained white aprons with three mutated, scalpel-armed enforcers guarding his flank.

"Look what has crawled back to the nest," Varkis sneered, his raspy voice echoing through the chamber as he turned with a cruel smirk.

"Subject Nine," Varkis continued, his yellowed eyes scanning Lira with clinical disgust. "I spent five years perfecting your cellular resonance, and you betrayed us for southern savages."

Lira stepped into the light of the braziers, her verdant aura radiating with intense, suffocating heat that made the alchemist’s skin prickle.

"You did not make me, Varkis," Lira said coldly, her voice echoing with sovereign authority. "You stole my childhood and called your cruelty science."

"Insolent brat!" Varkis spat, slamming his palm onto a red console. "Purge the vats! Incinerate the specimens!"

Red emergency strobes flashed to life as high-temperature heating coils began to glow around the children’s glass tanks.

"Bukata, shield the left tier!" Kiuga commanded, his tactical mind calculating the angles in a fraction of a heartbeat. "Maita, take the console!"

Bukata roared a deep war cry, planting his massive iron tower shield between the child tanks and the automated incinerator vents.

The heavy steel shield absorbed the sudden blast of alchemical fire, Bukata’s boots grinding deep grooves into the tiled floor as he held the line against the flames.

"You’ll have to burn through thirty tons of northern steel first, old man!" Bukata bellowed through the smoke.

Maita vanished in a blur of speed, darting across the high pipe racks to sever the incinerator power lines with two precise daggers.

The three mutated enforcers lunged at Lira, their arms replaced with razor-sharp surgical blades dripping with paralyzing neurotoxins.

Kiuga intercepted the first two with blinding blade work, his twin short swords parrying the heavy blades and severing the hydraulic lines at their elbows with lethal efficiency.

The third enforcer leaped straight at Lira, driving its spiked blade toward her throat.

Lira didn’t step back.

Her emerald aura exploded into a radiant shockwave of pure cellular force, freezing the mutated enforcer in mid-air.

With a swift, graceful movement, Lira pressed her glowing palm directly against the enforcer’s chest plate.

Instead of pouring soothing warmth, Lira reversed her cellular polarity, sending a violent wave of biological disruption straight into the creature’s heart. ℯℯ𝑙.

The enforcer gasped, its mutated veins turning black as its artificial nervous system overloaded, collapsing onto the tiles as lifeless dead weight.

Varkis scrambled backward in terror, knocking over glass vials of corrosive acid as he reached for an emergency syringe.

Before his fingers could touch the needle, Lira was standing right in front of him, her emerald eyes glowing with terrifying, incisive clarity.

"Stay away from me!" Varkis shrieked, cowering against the steel control panel. "I gave you your power! You owe your life to my work!"

Lira looked down at the shivering alchemist, the deep, agonizing fear that had haunted her youth dissolving into cold, righteous pity.

"My life belongs to the people I love," Lira said softly. "And none of them are monsters like you."

She reached out, placing two fingers lightly against Varkis’s forehead, where his own corrupted bio-implants rested beneath the skin.

With a gentle pulse of cellular disruption, Lira overloaded the neural implant, instantly paralyzing his limbs and plunging his mind into a dreamless, permanent stupor.

Varkis slumped to the floor, completely neutralized without a drop of blood spilled.

"Console is disabled!" Maita called out, wiping sweat from his brow as the emergency strobes flickered and died.

Lira turned immediately toward the rows of bubbling cryogenic vats, tears welling in her eyes as she looked at the terrified faces of the children inside.

She walked to the lead tank, pressing both hands against the thick glass as her emerald aura poured into the fluid.

"Shatter," Lira whispered.

The glass cracked in a clean web, bursting outward as the nutrient fluid flooded the floor.

Lira caught a shivering eight-year-old girl in her arms, wrapping her in her warm cloak as she pressed her glowing palm to the child’s forehead.

The soothing, radiant warmth of Lira’s cellular resonance flowed into the girl’s veins, dissolving the dark alchemical ink seals and healing her poisoned lungs.

The little girl coughed, opened her tear-filled brown eyes, and clung tightly to Lira’s neck with trembling hands.

"You’re safe now," Lira whispered softly, kissing the child’s forehead as tears streamed freely down her cheeks. "No one will ever hurt you again."

Maita, Bukata, and the arriving Cilsi medics moved through the remaining vats, gently lifting all forty rescued children and wrapping them in thermal blankets.

Kiuga stepped beside Lira, resting a reassuring hand on her shoulder as she held the sleeping girl.

"The laboratory is purged," Kiuga said quietly, a rare warm smile breaking across his sharp features. "You broke their nightmare, Lira."

Lira stood up, holding the child close to her chest as she looked around the silent, ruined operating theater.

The dark ghost of her past was gone forever; in its place remained only the fierce, unbreakable resolve of a protector.

"Let’s get them to the surface," Lira said, her voice filled with quiet strength. "Sagiri and Senraki will need us at the High Throne."
