THE LAST KEEPER

Chapter 402: THE TITAN’S ARRIVAL

  • Next Chapter

In the frozen belly of the Bleeding Gorge, the air was thick with the stench of ozone, pulverized stone, and dying metal.

The deafening clash of bronze against iron echoed relentlessly between the two-thousand-foot granite canyon walls.

Squad 25 stood back-to-back in a tight defensive triangle beneath a sloping granite overhang.

Their field cloaks were torn and caked in black alchemical grease, surrounded by a rising mound of broken enforcer armor and shattered pikes.

Kaka let out a guttural northern war grunt, swinging his primary war axe in a brutal horizontal arc that cleaved through three bronze breastplates. The sheer kinetic shockwave hurled the shattered enforcers ten paces into the icy creek bed.

His broad chest heaved beneath his battered cuirass, steam billowing from his nostrils into the sub-zero air. "They just keep crawling out of the shale like maggots!" Kaka roared, his secondary axe decapitating an advancing spearman.

The three-pronged mechanical spears of the Soulless jabbed in relentless unison, seeking to overwhelm the squad. Each enforcer fought without self-preservation, stepping over the corpses of their fallen comrades without pausing.

Beside him, Maita darted through the swirling frost like a venomous shadow, his twin short-swords flashing in blinding figure-eight parries. He severed knee joints and throat seals with surgical speed, never staying in one spot for more than a single breath.

"Save your breath for swinging, Asakana clan!" Maita yelled, dodging a three-pronged pike by a hair’s breadth before driving his dagger beneath the enforcer’s iron collar.

"Do not presume to tell me what to do, Chimera Clan." Kaka snarles

Beneath the granite overhang, Kiuga knelt in the crimson-stained snow, pressing his palms firmly against Lira’s crushed ribs. His hands trembled with exhaustion, channeling raw cellular vitality into her torn pleural cavity to keep her lungs from collapsing.

"Her pulse is flickering like a dying candle in a gale," Kiuga muttered through gritted teeth, sweat freezing on his brow. "If we cannot stop this internal hemorrhaging within ten minutes, all the medicine in the continent won’t bring her back."

Zolinka hurled his second-to-last concussive vial into a cluster of charging heavy shock troops. The fiery blast threw five armored figures into the rocky ravine, but twenty more immediately stepped forward to fill the gap in eerie, synchronized silence.

"I am down to my final incendiary flask and six bronze darts!" Zolinka shouted, his voice hoarse against the howling wind. "We cannot hold this perimeter if they bring those siege engines into firing range!"

Ulekai Zazarie was holding their own, flanking each other. Ulekai the fearful was not showing his usual whining characteristics, which was a good sign.

Lying against the cold stone behind them, Rika watched the carnage with wide, haunted eyes. Her breath hitched as she saw the sheer ferocity with which Squad 25 fought to shield her and the dying girl from the mechanical horde.

She had spent years plotting the destruction of the N’folu, yet these young southern and northern warriors were bleeding to death to keep her alive. A sharp, stinging shame tightened in her throat, rendering her completely speechless.

Just then, hundreds of soulless pushed through... This was bad.

From the southwestern clouds beyond the mountain pass, a sound ripped through the sky that silenced every weapon in the gorge. An earth-shattering, primordial titan roar that shook the marrow of every living mortal.

The grey clouds parted violently as a colossal serpentine silhouette, over three hundred paces in length, crested the mountain ridge like a living avalanche of obsidian scales and ancient fury.

"Zaira!" Kiuga bellowed, his booming laugh echoing across the gorge with explosive northern joy. "The queen is here, you hollow bastards! The queen has arrived!"

Zaira descended into the canyon with the unstoppable force of a falling meteor, her massive tail sweeping across the western ridge with seismic devastation. The hundreds of soulless were swept away in an instant with one strike of his tail.

Her obsidian scales ground against the sheer canyon walls, sending cascades of stone down into the gorge as her immense shadow blotted out the twilight sky. The ground trembled beneath her weight, forcing the Soulless vanguard to lose their footing.

Riding upon the titan serpent’s armored crest stood N’varu, her desert veil whipping wildly in the freezing gale, her sharp amber eyes taking in the two-tiered battlefield in a single tactical glance.

"Sandshades, secure the southern flank and reinforce the squad!" N’varu commanded, her voice cutting through the canyon like a tempered blade. "Clear the perimeter around the Keeper’s companions!"

Nine cloaked figures dropped from Zaira’s massive flanks, descending through the freezing air like desert hawks. They landed upon the canyon floor in silent, synchronized grace, kicking up plumes of frozen dust as they drew their crescent scimitars.

The 9 Sandshades unleashed the legendary desert arts of the Tavhiri Tribe, gliding across the rocky scree with impossible, frictionless velocity. Their curved blades blurred through the air, weaving a lethal web of crescent arcs that decimated the Soulless vanguard within seconds.

"Hold the line!" One Sandshade spoke, sliding into the defensive perimeter alongside Kaka and Maita.

Kiuga grinned through the blood on his beard, slamming his war axe into a fallen enforcer’s chest. "Never thought I’d be glad to see desert sand in a frozen northern ditch, but you boys arrived just in time!"

"Keep your guard up; it is not time to laugh," Kaka cracked with a breathless grin, parrying a stray pike alongside two Sandshades.

Kiuga adjusted his grip on Lira’s pressure points, his exhausted face softening with renewed hope. "Zolinka, work with the Sandshades to seal off that eastern bottleneck! We have a fighting chance now!"

With the Sandshades securing the ground front, Zaira coiled her massive muscular frame against the canyon bedrock, unleashing a deafening sonic pulse that flattened fifty paces of charging enforcers into the mud.

Without lingering on the valley floor, the colossal serpent propelled her massive body vertically upward, scaling the sheer two-thousand-foot granite cliff in a matter of heartbeats to reach the upper spires.

High above the abyss, Sagiri and Kiana remained locked in their high-frequency duel along the razor-thin precipice. Sparks cascaded from their crossed weapons, illuminating the freezing dusk in bursts of white and crimson lightning.

Kiana’s emotionless dust-rose eyes flickered toward the ascending titan, her conditioned combat mind instantly recalculating the tactical parameters of the engagement. She perceived no fear, only a vast escalation in incoming kinetic energy.

She kicked off Sagiri’s black blade with mechanical precision, phasing backward twenty paces through empty air to perch weightlessly upon the pinnacle of an isolated granite spire.

Sagiri dropped into a low combat crouch on the icy ledge, his left hand tightening around Nokai as twenty floating blades reformed their protective orbital archive shield around his shoulders. He felt the familiar, warm resonance of Zaira’s spirit bond surging through the Archive.

Zaira crested the summit of the gorge, coiling her massive obsidian body around the adjacent mountain peak. Her burning crimson eyes were locked onto the tiny silver-masked figure perched across the chasm.

N’varu vaulted from Zaira’s head, landing lightly beside Sagiri on the frosted ledge. She drew her twin curved daggers, her keen gaze immediately assessing the blood dripping from Sagiri’s poisoned right shoulder.

"You look terrible, Supreme Chief," N’varu said, her lips curling into a fierce, knowing smirk beneath her desert veil. "I leave you alone for two days, and you bring down an entire mountain on your head."

"She is the Apex Soulless," Sagiri replied, his breath misting in the freezing wind. "The last of the Sekana Clan. Sir Black hollowed out her mind and bound her soul with an anti-Keeper seal."

N’varu’s eyes sharpened with grim recognition as she looked at the silver mask and the moonlight needles. "The 4th Tribe... The path-walkers meant to keep the keepers in check?I thought they were only a myth whispered by the elders."

"She is very real," Sagiri said, shifting Nokai into an offensive posture. "Her void arts ignore physical mass, and her silver needles sever vital nerve channels on contact. We cannot fight her with ordinary martial logic."

"Kun Nakia surrendered the western basin after Zaira shattered their vanguard," N’varu explained, adjusting her grip on her daggers.

Across the frozen void, Kiana raised both arms in a synchronized, fluid gesture. The twin silver void needles between her pale fingers multiplied into twenty identical phantom projections, humming with cold anti-relic resonance.

The battlefield had decisively split into two fronts: on the canyon floor below, Squad 25 and the 9 Sandshades fought to protect Lira against the endless Soulless army; in the freezing skies above, the Last Keeper, the Desert Shadow, and the Titan Serpent faced the deadliest weapon ever forged by Lanka.

Zaira bared her massive venomous fangs, letting out a resonant, low-frequency roar that vibrated through the clouds and cracked the frost on the mountain peaks.

Kiana lowered her center of gravity, her dust-rose eyes locking onto the three targets with terrifying, automated precision.

The dark ink seal on her forehead flared with intense violet light, preparing to execute the apex slaughter protocol installed in her by sir black.
