THE LAST KEEPER
Chapter 401: BREACHING INTO THE SKY
The mountain exploded outward in a deafening eruption as the two broke out into the sky. Jagged rock showered down the sheer cliffs as Sagiri and the Apex Soulless breached into the freezing air above six black’s hidden lab.
Kiana emerged first, vaulting fifty paces into the grey twilight sky like a silver phantom. She landed weightlessly upon the razor-thin ridge of an overhanging obsidian crag, dust-rose eyes locking onto Sagiri.
Her slender frame did not shudder even after the uncontrolled strike from Sagiri. In her pale hands, the twin silver void needles hummed with high-frequency resonance, casting cold moonlight reflections across the frozen stone.
Sagiri burst through the now-open mountain fraction of a heartbeat behind her, propelled by the kinetic thrust of the Archive. Twenty floating black blades formed a whirling spiral beneath his boots, catching his descent above the rocky place.
The biting frost bit into the open wound on his right shoulder, but the golden-silver currents of the Archive held the necrotic venom at bay.
He gripped the spine of Nokai firmly in his left hand, crimson eyes burning through the mist with lethal focus.
Below them, the mountain rumbled as the subterranean forge collapsed. Plumes of black smoke and alchemical fire vented from deep fissures along the canyon walls, painting the frozen gorge in smoke hues.
Kiana did not grant him a moment to adjust to the freezing altitude.
Her body dissolved into a blur of void displacement, executing the Horizon Steps of the exiled Sekana Clan across the vertical face of the cliff.
She ran along the sheer rock wall with terrifying speed, defying gravity as her boots kicked off tiny outcroppings of shale.
With a synchronized flick of her wrists, she unleashed a fan of twelve silver needles in lethal parabolic arcs.
Sagiri shifted his center of gravity mid-air, commanding Nokai’s twenty blades with a sharp mental pulse.
The black daggers snapped into an interlocking curved shield, intercepting the silver barrage with a rapid cascade of metallic clangs.
Sparks showered into the abyss as the anti-Keeper needles bounced off ancient living metal. The concussive force of the volley pushed Sagiri back slightly, but he did not falter in his movements.
Before the deflected needles could fall into the canyon, Kiana leaped from the cliff wall, kicking off empty air through void compression.
She closed the forty-pace gap in a breath, driving her primary needle toward Sagiri’s left eye.
Sagiri leaned his head backward by a fraction of an inch, feeling the razor-sharp silver point slice through the mountain air above his brow. The displaced wind from her thrust drew a thin line of blood across his cheekbone.
In the same fluid motion, Sagiri swept Nokai upward in a sweeping crescent arc, aiming to cleave her torso with the Seventh Blade Dance. The black edge hummed with dark flame, leaving a trail of distorted space in its wake.
Kiana twisted her spine in mid-air with inhuman flexibility, phasing her torso through the outer aura of the blade. Her counter-strike was instantaneous, a lightning-fast palm thrust aimed directly at Sagiri’s exposed ribs.
Sagiri brought his knee upward to meet the blow, colliding with her palm in a concussive shockwave that parted the surrounding steam clouds. The impact sent both of them rebounding through the freezing sky in opposite trajectories.
Sagiri landed heavily upon a sloping shelf of frozen granite, boots grinding deep grooves into icy rock to break his slide. He exhaled a plume of white vapor, his breath steady despite the frantic pace of the duel.
A thousand paces below, in the shadowed depths of the Bleeding Gorge, iron sirens wailed against the canyon walls as the subterranean battle spilled out onto the freezing rocky floor.
Kiuga and Zolinka burst through the lower drainage spillway, carrying the unconscious Lira on a makeshift stretcher of field cloaks and reinforced spear shafts. Rika stumbled between them in heavy bronze chains, coughing against the sulfur fumes.
"Keep moving toward the southern boulder field!" Kiuga barked, his face streaked with soot and drying blood. "Do not let her chest tilt downward, or the pooled blood in her pleural cavity will drown her!"
Zolinka vaulted over a shattered drain pipe, hurling a blinding flash pellet into the dark tunnel mouth behind them. The concussive blast triggered a localized cave-in, sealing the drainage sluice under three tons of falling granite.
From the dust of the collapsing tunnel emerged Kaka and Maita, covered in black grease and enforcer blood. Kaka’s heavy war axes were notched and dripping, his broad chest heaving under his dented iron cuirass.
"Those grey-coated bastards don’t know when to die," Kaka growled, spitting dark grit onto the shale. "There must be five hundred of them pouring out of the valley bunker gates right now."
Maita wiped his short-sword clean with a swift flick, his sharp eyes scanning the frozen canyon floor. "They are deploying heavy ballista teams on the western ridges to cut off our retreat."
Across the rocky basin, hundreds of grey-coated Soulless shock troops advanced in tight, disciplined phalanxes. Their iron boots crunched over the frozen scree, three-pronged mechanical spears leveled in a wall of bristling bronze and steel.
"Set Lira down behind that granite overhang!" Kiuga commanded, drawing twin broad daggers. "Kaka, take the center! Maita, protect our northern flank! Zolinka, ready every incendiary vial you have left!"
"Alright," Kaka roared, slamming his heavy axes together with an ear-splitting clang. "Come get some southern steel, you mindless puppets!"
The Soulless vanguard surged forward in eerie silence, charging across the frozen creek bed with mechanical ferocity. The clash of metal erupted instantly, turning the base of the Bleeding Gorge into a desperate slaughterhouse.
High above the gorge, the battle between Sagiri and the Apex Soulless reached a terrifying cadence.
Kiana bounded across the jagged spires, her silver needles leaving shimmering trails of void light in the dusk.
She initiated the Third Form of the Empty Shell, splitting her physical presence into four silent void mirages that surrounded Sagiri on the narrow ledge.
Each phantom moved with identical fluidity, masking the origin of her deadly intent.
Sagiri closed his eyes, shutting out the deceptive visual illusions to attune his mind entirely to the ancient heartbeat of the Archive.
In the silent expanse of the Deep Sea trance, three shapes had no weight, while the fourth carried the freezing draft of displaced void space.
"Nokai, Third Dance Whirling Eclipse!" Sagiri whispered, his voice calm amidst the howling gale.
The twenty floating black blades expanded outward in an explosive sphere of dark energy, spinning like a scythe through the four silhouettes. Three mirages dissolved into grey mist, while the true Kiana was forced to parry with cross-locked needles.
The kinetic collision rang out like a thunderclap across the mountain peaks. The force of Nokai’s blades drove Kiana backward along the cliff edge, her boots chipping shards from the frozen rock.
Before she could reset her stance, Sagiri closed the distance with ancestral speed, driving the main blade of Nokai down in an execution strike.
The dark steel hummed with the crushing gravitational weight of the N’folu.
Kiana crossed her silver needles above her head in an ironclad parry, catching the descending black edge inches from her porcelain mask. A blinding ring of silver and crimson sparks erupted between them, scorching the surrounding stone.
Their weapons remained locked in a trembling stalemate over the sheer precipice, two thousand feet above the raging battle on the canyon floor.
Through the eye-slits of her porcelain mask, Kiana’s dust-rose eyes stared into Sagiri’s blazing crimson gaze with vacant emptiness.
"You were born of the Sekana," Sagiri said, his voice cutting through the mountain wind. "You are not an iron puppet for Sir Black’s ambitions, Kiana. Wake up!"
The name seemed to strike an invisible tremor through her conditioned mind, causing the silver needles to vibrate faintly. But within a fraction of a second, the dark bio-neural seal on her forehead flared with oily purple light, suppressing the anomaly.
Kiana’s eyes hardened back into cold glass as she channeled a pulse of void energy through her needles, attempting to throw Sagiri off-balance toward the yawning abyss.
Sagiri dug his heels into the frozen stone, refusing to give up ground as the wind whipped his dark cloak into a frenzy. His muscles burned with strain, his left arm bearing the full weight of her unrelenting assault.
Far below in the gorge, the sounds of Squad 25’s desperate battle grew more chaotic as the Soulless legions tightened their suffocating encirclement around the wounded Lira and the defenseless Rika.
Suddenly, a low, rhythmic vibration began to pulse through the bedrock of the entire mountain range. The frozen scree on the cliff ledges rattled violently, and the howling wind seemed to pause in anticipation of an overwhelming force of nature.
Deep from the southwestern skies beyond the mountain pass, an earth-shaking roar echoed through the Bleeding Gorge, tearing through storm clouds with the unstoppable fury of a titan.
Zaira.
