The last DragonHeart
Chapter 40: The Summons
The letter arrived at dawn, delivered by a messenger clad in robes of silver and starlight.
James stood on the balcony of the Ashford palace, watching the sunrise paint the sky in shades of amber and rose. The city below was already stirring to life—merchants opening their stalls, children running through the streets, families gathering for their morning meals. It was a scene of perfect peace, the kind of peace that James had fought so hard to achieve.
But the letter in his hand threatened to shatter it all.
"It's from Elara," James said, his voice low. "She's summoning me to the Aetherwilds. She says it's urgent."
Kael appeared beside him, his mismatched eyes scanning the letter over James's shoulder. "Urgent how? Like 'the world is ending' urgent? Or 'I forgot to water my plants' urgent?"
James shook his head slowly. "She didn't say. Just that I needed to come alone. And that I needed to come now."
Kael's eyes widened. "Alone? That's suspicious. That's very suspicious. I don't like this."
James folded the letter and tucked it into his pocket. "I don't like it either. But Elara has never led me astray before. If she says it's urgent, I believe her."
Kael grabbed his arm, his voice desperate. "Then I'm coming with you. No arguments."
James met his gaze, his eyes soft with gratitude. "I know you want to protect me. But she said alone. And I trust her."
Kael opened his mouth to argue, then closed it. His shoulders slumped in defeat. "Fine. But if you're not back in three days, I'm coming after you. And I'm bringing everyone."
James smiled, placing a hand on his friend's shoulder. "I wouldn't expect anything less."

The Journey to the Aetherwilds
The journey to the Aetherwilds took two days.
James traveled alone, his footsteps echoing through the ancient forests and across the floating islands. The landscape was just as beautiful as he remembered—rivers of liquid light, trees with bark like burnished gold, creatures of pure energy that watched him with ancient, knowing eyes.
But without the golden fire, the journey was harder. He tired more easily. He ached more deeply. He was vulnerable in ways he'd never been before.
Yet he pressed on. He had to.
On the second day, he reached the Dragon's Rest. The valley was just as he remembered it—golden grass, swirling sky, and the ancient altar at its center. But there was something different about it now. Something that made his heart race with anticipation.
Elara stood at the altar, her silver hair flowing in the gentle breeze. Her ancient eyes were filled with a mixture of sorrow and urgency.
"James," she said, her voice low. "Thank you for coming."
James stepped forward, his jaw tight. "What's so urgent that you had to drag me all the way out here? What's happened?"
Elara was silent for a long moment. Then she spoke, her voice barely a whisper.
"I've discovered something. Something that changes everything."
James's blood ran cold. "What do you mean?"
Elara raised her hand, and a vision formed in the air. It showed a young woman—perhaps eighteen years old—with dark hair and eyes that gleamed with golden fire. She was running through a forest, her face pale with fear.
"This is Mira," Elara said. "She's a Dragonheart descendant. Like you, James. Her power was sealed at birth, hidden from the world. But recently, the seal has begun to break."
James stared at the vision, his heart racing. "A Dragonheart descendant? There are others?"
Elara nodded slowly. "There are more. Many more. The Dragonheart bloodline didn't end with you, James. It was scattered across the Seven Realms, hidden in plain sight. Your parents didn't just seal your power—they sealed the power of every Dragonheart descendant they could find."
James felt tears prick at his eyes. "Why? Why would they do that?"
Elara's eyes were ancient and sorrowful. "To protect them. To protect all of you. They knew that the Celestial Council would hunt down every Dragonheart they could find. So they scattered you, hid you, and sealed your power until the time was right."
James's fists clenched. "And now? What's happening now?"
Elara's voice dropped to a whisper. "The seals are breaking. All of them. The Void's emergence, the Celestial Council's fall—it's all destabilized the seals. If we don't do something, every Dragonheart descendant in the Seven Realms will be exposed. And there are those who would hunt them down."
James's blood ran cold. "Who?"
Elara met his gaze, her eyes blazing with intensity. "The remnants of the Celestial Council. They're not all gone, James. Some survived. And they've been waiting for this moment. Waiting for the Dragonhearts to reveal themselves so they can destroy them."
James was silent for a long moment. The weight of the revelation pressed against him like a physical burden.
"What do I do?" he asked, his voice barely a whisper. "I have no power. No fire. I can't protect anyone."
Elara stepped closer, her ancient eyes blazing with intensity. "You have something more powerful than fire, James. You have leadership. Courage. A network of allies who would die for you. You don't need power to protect the Dragonhearts. You need to find them, unite them, and give them the hope they've never had."
James closed his eyes. He thought of his parents, who had sacrificed everything to protect the Dragonheart bloodline. He thought of Kael, Serena, Rourke, Lysandra, and all the people who had believed in him. He thought of the young woman in the vision—Mira—running through the forest, terrified and alone.
"I'll do it," James said, his voice steady. "I'll find them. I'll protect them. I'll give them hope."
Elara smiled—a genuine, heartfelt expression. "I knew you would. That's why I summoned you."

The Search Begins
James returned to Ashford with a new purpose.
He gathered his allies in the Hall of Unity, his voice echoing across the chamber. "I've discovered something. Something that changes everything."
Kael stepped forward, his mismatched eyes wide with concern. "What happened? What did Elara tell you?"
James looked at his allies—his family. "There are other Dragonheart descendants. Hidden across the Seven Realms. Their seals are breaking, and the Celestial remnants are hunting them."
Serena's ice-blue eyes narrowed. "How many?"
James shook his head. "I don't know. But we need to find them before the remnants do."
Rourke's massive form shifted. "Then we find them. We protect them. We give them a home."
Lysandra's dark eyes gleamed. "I can use my network to track them. Find out where they're hiding."
Kael's green healing energy pulsed. "And I'll heal them when they're found. Help them adjust to their power."
James looked at his allies—his family. The warmth in his chest blazed with fierce determination.
"Then let's get to work."
