The last DragonHeart
Chapter 37: The Void's Advance
The darkness spread like a plague across the Earth Realm.
James stood on the walls of Ashford, watching the horizon churn with shadows. The sky had turned black, streaked with veins of crimson energy that pulsed like a dying heartbeat. Villages burned in the distance, their flames swallowed by the encroaching void. Screams echoed across the plains, carried by winds that howled with ancient fury.
"It's spreading faster than we anticipated," Sage said, her scarred face grim. "The Void is consuming everything in its path. If we don't stop it soon, it will swallow the entire realm."
James's golden fire blazed with cold fury. "How long do we have?"
Sage's eyes were ancient and sorrowful. "Three days. Maybe less. The seal is deteriorating rapidly. Once it breaks completely, the Void will pour into the Seven Realms like a tidal wave. There will be no stopping it."
Kael stepped forward, his mismatched eyes wide with fear. "But we can stop it, right? James has the Legacy now. He can seal it again."
Elara appeared beside them, her silver hair flowing in the unnatural wind. "The Legacy can seal the Void. But it requires a sacrifice. James must give up his power—all of it. The Legacy will be consumed by the seal, and he will be left as he was before his awakening."
James's blood ran cold. "Grade Zero?"
Elara nodded slowly. "Grade Zero. No cultivation. No golden fire. No Dragonheart bloodline. You would be ordinary, James. Mortal. Fragile. Just like everyone else."
Kael grabbed James's arm, his voice desperate. "There has to be another way. There's always another way. We've faced impossible odds before and found a way through."
Elara shook her head, her ancient eyes filled with sorrow. "There is no other way. The seal requires the full power of the Legacy. It's the only thing strong enough to contain the Void."
James was silent for a long moment. The golden fire in his chest pulsed warmly, familiar and comforting. It had become part of him—his identity, his purpose, his very soul. The thought of losing it was like imagining the loss of a limb.
But the thought of losing everything else was worse.
"What happens if I don't do it?" he asked quietly. "What happens if I keep the Legacy and let the Void consume the realms?"
Elara's voice was barely a whisper. "Then everything you've built will be destroyed. The Seven Realms will fall to chaos. Everyone you love will die. And the Void will spread across the universe, consuming everything in its path."
James closed his eyes. The weight of the choice pressed against him like a physical burden.
Sacrifice my power. Or sacrifice everything else.
He thought of his parents, who had given their lives to protect him. He thought of Kael, who had stood by him through every battle. He thought of Serena, Rourke, Lysandra, Sage, and all the people who had believed in him.
They had fought for a better world. They had sacrificed so much already.
And now it was his turn.
"I'll do it," James said, his voice steady. "I'll sacrifice the Legacy. I'll seal the Void."
Kael grabbed him, his mismatched eyes blazing with desperation. "No! James, you can't! You'll lose everything! You'll be ordinary—"
"Ordinary is better than dead," James interrupted, his voice gentle. "Ordinary is better than watching everyone I love die. I've spent my whole life fighting to protect the people I care about. I'm not going to stop now."
Kael's eyes filled with tears. "But what about you? What about your dreams? Your future?"
James smiled—a sad, genuine smile. "My future is whatever I make of it. With or without the Legacy. The people I love are what matter most. And I'm not going to let them die."
Kael pulled him into a fierce hug. "I hate this. I hate everything about this. But I'll be with you. Always."
James hugged him back, the golden fire in his chest warm with gratitude.
"Always."

The Journey to the Void
The journey to the Void's heart took two days.
James led his allies through the devastated landscape, his golden fire blazing around them like a protective shield. The shadows pressed against the barrier, hungry and malevolent. Creatures of pure chaos stalked them through the darkness, their eyes burning with ancient hunger.
Serena's ice blazed, freezing the shadows that crept too close. Rourke's massive form crushed any creature that dared to attack. Lysandra moved through the darkness, her dagger finding the hearts of shadow-beasts with deadly precision. Kael's green healing energy pulsed, keeping them all alive.
And Sage—Sage walked beside James, her silver energy crackling with ancient power.
"Are you sure about this?" Sage asked quietly. "Once you give up the Legacy, there's no getting it back."
James nodded slowly. "I'm sure. This is the only way."
Sage studied him for a long moment. "Your parents would be proud. They sacrificed everything to protect you. And now you're sacrificing everything to protect the realms."
James's golden fire flickered. "I hope so. I hope they understand."
Sage placed a hand on his shoulder. "They do. They always have."

The Heart of the Void
They reached the Void's heart on the third day.
It was a massive tear in reality, a wound in the fabric of existence that pulsed with dark energy. Shadows poured from it like blood from a wound, spreading across the landscape like a cancer. At its center stood a figure of pure chaos—a being of shadow and fire that radiated ancient power.
"The Void King," Elara breathed, her voice trembling. "The embodiment of the Void itself. It's been waiting for this moment. Waiting for the seal to break."
James stepped forward, his golden fire blazing. "Then I'll give it what it wants."
The Void King's form twisted, its voice echoing like a thousand screams. "James Dragonheart. The Last of Your Kind. You come to sacrifice yourself. How noble. How foolish."
James's golden fire blazed brighter. "I'm not sacrificing myself. I'm sacrificing my power. There's a difference."
The Void King laughed—a hollow, terrible sound. "You think giving up your power will save them? You think the realms will be safe? Without your power, you'll be nothing. Weak. Vulnerable. And the Void will return."
James shook his head slowly. "I don't believe that. The Void was sealed once before. It can be sealed again. And when it is, I'll be there to make sure it stays sealed."
The Void King's form twisted with fury. "You cannot defeat me. I am eternal. I am chaos. I am the end of all things."
James raised his hands, golden fire blazing around him. "Maybe not. But I can stop you. And that's enough."
He channeled the Legacy—every ounce of golden fire, every drop of Dragonheart power. The light blazed brighter than ever before, consuming the darkness, pushing back the shadows.
"NO!" the Void King screamed. "THIS ISN'T POSSIBLE!"
James felt the power draining from him—faster and faster, like water through a broken dam. The golden fire flickered, dimmed, threatened to extinguish entirely.
But he didn't stop.
He thought of his parents. He thought of Kael. He thought of everyone who had believed in him. And he poured everything he had into the seal.
The Void screamed as the golden light consumed it, sealing the tear in reality, pushing back the chaos. The darkness receded, the shadows faded, and the world was still.
James collapsed to his knees, his body trembling. The golden fire was gone. The Legacy was gone. He was ordinary.
Kael rushed to his side, his green healing energy pulsing around him. "James! Are you okay? Can you hear me? Say something!"
James managed a weak smile. "I'm fine. Just... tired."
Kael's eyes filled with tears. "You did it. You actually did it."
James looked down at his hands. They were still. Quiet. The golden fire that had blazed through them was gone.
But he was alive. His friends were alive. The realms were saved.
And that was enough.
