The last DragonHeart
Chapter 34: The Remnants Strike
The celebration of unity lasted only three days.
James stood in the Hall of Unity, surrounded by the leaders of all Seven Realms. The atmosphere was electric with hope and determination. The Inferno Realm had joined the alliance. The Celestial Council was broken. The future seemed bright.
But James couldn't shake the feeling of dread that coiled in his chest.
Sage appeared beside him, her scarred face grim. "You feel it too."
James nodded slowly. "Something's wrong. I can't explain it. But I feel it."
Sage's eyes were ancient and knowing. "The Council's remnants have regrouped. They've found a way to use the Dragonheart bloodline against you."
James's blood ran cold. "How?"
Sage shook her head. "I don't know. But I've seen this pattern before. The Council always has a contingency plan. Always."
Before James could respond, the doors of the Hall of Unity burst open. A messenger stumbled in, his face pale with terror.
"James!" he gasped. "The Council's remnants—they're attacking! They've breached the Aetherwilds! They're heading for Ashford!"
James's golden fire blazed. "How many?"
The messenger's voice trembled. "Thousands. Maybe more. And they have something else—something I've never seen before. A weapon made of pure golden fire."
James's blood ran cold.
Golden fire. Dragonheart fire.
"They've found a way to use my bloodline against me," he breathed.
Kael rushed to his side, his mismatched eyes wide with fear. "James—what does that mean? How is that possible?"
James turned to Sage, his golden fire blazing. "You knew about this. You knew they could use my bloodline against me."
Sage's scarred face was unreadable. "I suspected. The Council has been studying the Dragonheart bloodline for centuries. They've always wanted to harness its power. It was only a matter of time."
James's fists clenched. "And you didn't warn me?"
Sage met his gaze without flinching. "I didn't want to distract you. You needed to unite the realms. You needed to believe in yourself. If I had told you, you might have doubted your own power."
James opened his mouth to argue—but Kael placed a hand on his shoulder.
"It doesn't matter now," Kael said, his voice steady. "What matters is what we do next. We face them. Together."
James took a deep breath, his golden fire blazing with fierce determination.
"Then let's face them. Together."

The Battle of Ashford
The Council's remnants descended on Ashford like a plague of locusts.
James led his army to the city's walls, his golden fire blazing around him. His allies gathered at his sides—Serena, her ice-blue eyes cold and focused. Rourke, his massive form unbreakable. Lysandra, her dark eyes gleaming with deadly intent. Kael, his green healing energy pulsing with determination. Sage, her silver energy crackling with ancient power.
And the leaders of all Seven Realms, their forces united under a single banner.
The Council's army was massive—thousands of soldiers clad in black armor, their weapons blazing with dark energy. But at their head stood something that made James's blood run cold.
A figure wreathed in golden fire.
It was a Celestial—tall and gaunt, its face hidden behind a mask of pure radiance. The golden fire blazed around it like a second sun, pulsing with ancient power.
Dragonheart fire.
"James Ironheart," the figure called, its voice like thunder given form. "I am Archon Vexis. I have been studying your bloodline for centuries. And now I have mastered it."
James stepped forward, his golden fire blazing. "You've stolen my power. You've twisted it for your own purposes. But you'll never truly understand it."
Archon Vexis laughed—cold, hollow, mocking. "I don't need to understand it. I only need to wield it."
It raised its hand, and a wave of golden fire exploded toward James's army. Soldiers screamed as they were thrown backward, their bodies crashing against the city walls.
"NO!" James shouted, his golden fire blazing brighter. "You won't hurt them!"
He lunged, golden fire blazing around his fists. Archon Vexis met him head-on, their powers colliding with explosive force.
The impact sent shockwaves across the battlefield. James drove his blazing fist into the Archon's chest, but the golden fire absorbed the blow, deflecting it harmlessly.
"You can't hurt me, Dragonheart," Archon Vexis taunted. "Your power is mine now. I've mastered it. I've bent it to my will."
James gritted his teeth. "You've stolen it. But you'll never master it. Not truly."
He pressed the attack, his golden fire blazing brighter than ever. He thought of his parents. He thought of Kael. He thought of everyone who had stood by him. And he fought with everything he had.
But Archon Vexis was stronger.
The golden fire lashed toward James like a whip, and he was thrown backward, his body crashing against the ground. Pain exploded through his ribs, but he forced himself to his feet.
"James!" Kael shouted, rushing to his side. "Hold on! I'll heal you!"
James shook his head, his golden fire flickering weakly. "No. Stay back. This is my fight."
Kael's mismatched eyes blazed with defiance. "No! We fight together! Always!"
He raised his hands, green healing energy pulsing around them. He channeled his power into James, strengthening him, healing his wounds.
But Archon Vexis was already moving.
The golden fire exploded toward Kael, and James threw himself in front of his friend. The impact was devastating—James screamed as the golden fire consumed him, burning through his defenses, searing his flesh.
"JAMES!" Kael screamed.
But James didn't fall.
The golden fire surged through him, but it didn't destroy him. It awakened something—something ancient, something powerful, something that had been buried deep within his bloodline.
The Dragonheart bloodline remembers.
James rose to his feet, his body blazing with golden fire. But this time, it was different. This time, the fire was his—truly his. Not stolen. Not twisted. Pure.
Archon Vexis's mask flickered with uncertainty. "What... what have you done?"
James's voice echoed with ancient power. "You tried to steal my bloodline. But you don't understand it. You can't control it. It's not just power. It's legacy. It's love. It's sacrifice."
He raised his hand, and the golden fire exploded outward—not as a weapon, but as a wave of pure light. It washed over Archon Vexis, and the Celestial screamed as its stolen power was ripped away.
"NO!" Archon Vexis screamed. "THIS ISN'T POSSIBLE!"
James stood over him, his golden fire blazing like a beacon of hope. "It's over, Vexis. You've lost."
Archon Vexis's form flickered, its stolen power dissolving into fragments of light. It crumbled to ash, scattering across the battlefield.
The Council's remnants faltered. Their leader was gone. Their power was broken.
"FLEE!" one of them shouted. "THE DRAGONHEART IS UNSTOPPABLE!"
They scattered like leaves in the wind, retreating into the shadows from which they came.
James stood at the center of the battlefield, his golden fire blazing around him. His allies gathered around him, their eyes filled with pride and relief.
"We did it," Kael breathed. "We actually did it."
James smiled—a tired, genuine smile. "We did it. Together."

The Aftermath
The war was truly over.
James stood on the walls of Ashford, looking out at the city below. The people were celebrating in the streets, their faces alight with joy. The Council was broken. The remnants were defeated. The Seven Realms were free.
But James knew that this was just the beginning.
Kael appeared beside him, his mismatched eyes warm with pride. "You're brooding again. I can always tell. Your face gets all scrunchy."
James laughed. "My face does not get scrunchy."
"It absolutely does. It's very scrunchy right now. Like a confused potato who just realized he's the leader of all Seven Realms."
James shook his head, smiling. "You're impossible."
"I KNOW! It's my superpower!"
They stood in comfortable silence for a long moment. Then James spoke, his voice low and contemplative.
"What happens now? The war is over. The Council is gone. What do we do with the rest of our lives?"
Kael grinned. "We live. We build. We grow. We make the world a better place."
James turned to face him. "And what about you? What do you want to do?"
Kael's grin faded into something softer, more vulnerable. "I want to stay with you. I want to help you build this new world. I want to be by your side. Always."
James felt warmth spread through his chest. "Always?"
Kael nodded, his mismatched eyes shining. "Always."
James smiled—a genuine, heartfelt smile. "Then we'll do it together."
