The last DragonHeart
Chapter 33: The Inferno's Secret
The journey to the Inferno Realm took five days.
James led his diplomatic mission through the Aetherwilds, crossing rivers of liquid fire and landscapes that shimmered with heat. The air grew thicker with each step, heavy with the smell of sulfur and smoke. The sky turned from purple to orange to a deep, burning red.
Kael walked beside him, his green healing energy pulsing nervously. "Okay, I know I've said this before, but this place is terrifying. Like, actively trying to kill us terrifying. I can feel my eyebrows sweating."
James smiled despite the tension. "Your eyebrows can't sweat."
"THEY CAN AND THEY ARE!" Kael protested. "Look at them! They're drenched!"
Serena raised an eyebrow. "You're impossible."
"I KNOW! It's my superpower!"
Rourke's massive form loomed behind them, his gray skin gleaming with sweat. "The Inferno Realm is dangerous. The heat alone can kill an unprepared traveler. Stay close to me."
Lysandra moved through the shadows, her dark eyes scanning the horizon. "We're being watched. I can feel it. The Inferno King knows we're coming."
James's golden fire blazed brighter. "Good. Let him watch. Let him know that the Last Dragonheart is not afraid."
They continued forward, the landscape growing more hostile with each step. Geysers of molten rock erupted from the ground, and rivers of lava flowed through deep ravines. The heat was oppressive, suffocating, but James's golden fire shielded him and his allies.
Finally, they saw it.
The Inferno Capital was a city of obsidian and flame, its towers rising like black spears against the burning sky. Walls of molten rock surrounded the city, and rivers of lava flowed through its streets. At its center stood a massive palace, its spires wreathed in eternal fire.
"The Inferno King awaits," Sage said, her voice low. "Be careful, James. He's not like the other leaders. He's been waiting for this moment for a long time."
James nodded, his golden fire blazing. "Then let's not keep him waiting."

The Inferno Throne
The palace was a labyrinth of fire and shadow.
James led his allies through its winding corridors, their footsteps echoing against the obsidian walls. The heat was intense, but James's golden fire shielded them, creating a pocket of cool air around them.
They reached the throne room, and James saw the Inferno King for the first time.
He was a towering figure of flame and shadow, his body wreathed in eternal fire. His eyes burned like twin suns, and his voice echoed like thunder given form. He sat on a throne of molten rock, his fingers drumming against the armrest in a slow, rhythmic pattern.
"James Ironheart," the Inferno King said, his voice like grinding stone. "The Last Dragonheart. I've been expecting you."
James stepped forward, his golden fire blazing. "You know why I'm here. The Seven Realms have united. We offer you a choice: join us in peace, or face us in war."
The Inferno King laughed—a harsh, brutal sound that shook the very walls. "Join you? In peace? You have no idea what you're asking, Dragonheart. You have no idea what I know."
James's eyes narrowed. "Then tell me. What secrets do you hold?"
The Inferno King rose from his throne, his flame-wreathed form towering over them. "I know the truth about your parents. I know the truth about Elara Shadowvale's betrayal. And I know the truth about the Dragonheart bloodline."
James's blood ran cold. "Tell me."
The Inferno King's eyes blazed. "Your parents were not just cultivators. They were the leaders of a rebellion that nearly succeeded. They were the ones who first challenged the Celestial Council, centuries ago. And they were betrayed by someone they trusted—someone who feared their power."
Kael stepped forward, his face pale. "Elara Shadowvale. My ancestor."
The Inferno King nodded slowly. "Elara gave the Celestial Council the information they needed to crush the rebellion. She betrayed your parents, James. She betrayed them all."
James's golden fire blazed with fury. "I know. Sage told me."
The Inferno King's eyes narrowed. "But you don't know the full truth. You don't know why Elara betrayed them. You don't know what she was trying to protect."
James's heart raced. "Then tell me."
The Inferno King was silent for a long moment. Then he spoke, his voice low and ancient.
"Elara Shadowvale was not just a Soulweaver. She was the guardian of a secret—a secret that could destroy the Seven Realms. Your parents discovered that secret. They wanted to use it against the Celestial Council. Elara believed it was too dangerous. She believed it would destroy everything."
James's fists clenched. "What secret? What could possibly justify her betrayal?"
The Inferno King's eyes blazed with ancient fire. "The secret of the Dragonheart bloodline. Your bloodline, James. It's not just powerful. It's not just ancient. It's connected to the very fabric of the Seven Realms. If you unlock its full potential, you could reshape reality itself. You could destroy the Celestial Council. But you could also destroy everything else."
James felt the golden fire in his chest pulse with unease. "What are you saying?"
The Inferno King stepped closer, his flame-wreathed form radiating heat. "I'm saying that your parents were willing to risk everything to defeat the Council. They were willing to sacrifice the Seven Realms if it meant freedom. Elara Shadowvale couldn't accept that. She chose to betray them instead."
James was silent for a long moment. The golden fire in his chest burned with a mix of rage and grief.
"Are you saying my parents were willing to destroy the realms?"
The Inferno King shook his head slowly. "I'm saying they were willing to risk it. They believed that the Council had to be stopped, no matter the cost. Elara believed that the cost was too high. She chose to protect the realms, even if it meant betraying her friends."
James's mind raced. The truth was more complicated than he'd ever imagined. His parents weren't just heroes. They were flawed. They were willing to risk everything for their cause.
And Elara Shadowvale wasn't just a traitor. She was a protector. She had chosen to betray her friends to save the realms.
"So what do I do now?" James asked, his voice barely a whisper.
The Inferno King's eyes blazed. "You make a choice. You decide what kind of leader you want to be. You decide how far you're willing to go to protect the Seven Realms."
James's golden fire blazed brighter. "I will protect the realms. I will build a better future. But I won't sacrifice everything to do it."
The Inferno King studied him for a long moment. Then, slowly, he nodded.
"Then you are different from your parents. You are wiser. Perhaps that's why you'll succeed where they failed."

The Inferno Realm Joins
James stood in the center of the throne room, his golden fire blazing around him. The Inferno King had listened. He had shared his secrets. And now, the fate of the Seven Realms hung in the balance.
"I have one more question," James said. "What do you want? What does the Inferno Realm want?"
The Inferno King's eyes blazed. "I want what you want. Peace. Freedom. A future where the realms can coexist without fear. I've been waiting for someone strong enough to make that happen. And I think you're that person."
James's golden fire blazed brighter. "Then join us. Stand with the Seven Realms. Help us build a better future."
The Inferno King was silent for a long moment. Then, slowly, he stepped forward.
"The Inferno Realm stands with you, Dragonheart. Now and forever."
James felt the golden fire in his chest blaze with fierce determination.
"Then let's get to work."
