Chapter 1708: Against All Odds
Chapter 1708: Against All Odds
Rex roared.
He pushed the blood sphere back with all his might.
At this moment, he was betting everything he had on the Lone Alpha skill along with the Minor Law of Inevitability. From those two sources of power, he would gain immunity towards the invisible celestial energy and also the strength to inevitably triumph in this clash.
But his hope was shattered in the next second.
<Warning: the immunity was overpowered by the opposing force!>
<The user’s body couldn’t adapt and develop immunity towards celestial energy!>
<Notice: the user obtained Celestial Energy Resistance instead.>
Rex stared at the flickering notifications in desperation; a whimper escaped his lips as the blood sphere pushed him back harder. His golden exoskeleton and Soul Artifacts cracked. His combined might from both the life and voidal energy faded. And his right arm was mangled, squirting out blood.
Frantically, Rex used the Law of Misdirection repeatedly.
Using it again and again to lower the blood sphere’s strength, but he could only chip its strength.
Nothing significant to turn the tide.
And soon, his Spiritual Veins throbbed from the overuse of the Law of Misdirection.
But Rex didn’t give up.
He summoned all the Nightfall Stars he had accumulated and directly absorbed them.
Possessing an imbalanced Spiritual Vein would allow him to exert more strength than normal, and with many Red Nightfall Stars, his raw life energy reserve reached the Eternal Spirit rank. It bolstered him with more strength, but the ground was nearing.
I can’t shatter it.
Rex gritted his teeth and stared at the blood sphere reluctantly.
Even with everything he has on the table, the trial from the Altar of Gods is still impossibly hard.
I’m being overwhelmed.
Rex looked over his shoulder and saw that the ground was nearing behind him.
Soon, he would be pressed against the ground.
R-Right! I still have some Invincible Strands! System, use it!
<Notice: the Invincible Strands cannot block celestial energy.>
What?! Why…? Should the Invincible item make me invincible?
<No—the Invincible item or related to it would only bring the user to the maximum potential.>
<Currently, the user’s potential couldn’t reach the realm of the Gods.>
<In order to have the potential for Godhood, the user must at least achieve the Origin-rank bloodline.>
Rex was at a loss for words.
He had forgotten that the Invincible item only brought him to his full potential, not put him in a state of invincibility. As stated, to overpower celestial energy and block the blood sphere, he would need to be at the Origin-rank bloodline.
It’s useless.
Should I surrender? I can still have a strong Original Echo equivalent to the Crypt of Nature.
From the start, I was aiming to create the Blood Moon Echo to impress the Spirit Emperor as well as make me stronger. But now that I have Empress Morgana—on my side, is there really any reason for me to persist?
Rex endures the mounting pain as he hesitates over whether to continue or not.
He could get out of this and be happy with what he got.
All of this could end.
It was unnecessary to be stubborn and risk his life when there was a better way.
Rex gritted his teeth.
Like hell I would surrender here!
Boom!
Rex’s aura exploded again as his feral side took over, pushing him past his limits at the expense of cold-heartedly breaking his entire body. His anger grew exponentially higher—twisting his muscles so much that his bones were cracking under the pressure.
Even so, his regeneration covered the damages, allowing him to be as reckless as he wanted.
It was the nature of an Alpha to never back down.
Leave the surrendering to the Betas—Rex will never surrender; that’s who he is.
Be content with what I get…? Hell to that! The future is still obscure. What if I cross paths with another being like the Fifthborn—something that could give me the sense of helplessness, that suffocating dread that felt crushing? No… There are already those kinds of people threatening me.
Rex recalled the Lunirich Gods who were actively aiming to kill him.
Or the monster that peeked at him from the Chaos Realm.
Or even the mysterious Scions.
All of those entities would require him to reach the absolute top.
Every step he takes must be flawless, not short in any way possible—so he has to aim higher.
The Blood Moon Echo he created couldn’t be less than equivalent to the Altar of Gods’ rank!
“RRAARGGHH!!”
Rex’s eyes bulged as he forced his claws to thrust through the blood sphere.
Until the moment was over, he was not going to give up.
From afar, Princess Davina and Althea stole glances at their backs to see that the blood sphere had finally settled against the ground. A massive quake erupted underneath as the ground rippled with seismic force that could be felt for miles and miles away.
Both of them were worried as the descent of the blood sphere meant the defeat of Rex.
Even so, Princess Davina still held firm to her belief.
“How far are we going to go?” Althea asked, looking at Princess Davina questioningly. “Though the tremor reached us, I doubt the collision would reach us. We still have to go back and check whether he survived or not.”
“He’ll survive,” Princess Davina answered firmly. “And we’re not going to turn around.”
“Not going to turn around? What do you mean? What if he needs treatment immediately?”
“Show some faith, will you? He’s not that easily killed.”
Swoosh!
Just as Princess Davina instructed, the two headed straight back.
Princess Davina didn’t know—what about Althea, but she was going back home, back to the House of Castillon’s estate. Rex promised to come back, and she was going to make sure—that she would be there and wait for his return.
’I should ask the servants to prepare a celebratory feast.’ She chuckled slightly and quickened her pace.
About one minute later, when Princess Davina and Althea were too far to see what was going on, a gush of wind swept the entire area. And then, silence—like the world was pausing in anticipation. It was then that a massive explosion resounded.
From a distance, one could see the blood sphere eventually explode.
And the night erupted into daylight.
A flash swallowed the horizon whole, followed by a thunderous roar that came moments later—a sound so vast it seemed to tear the sky apart. The earth underneath heaven, under the force, ripples spread like wildfire through the plains.
Clouds were ripped asunder, and the wind howled in all directions.
It was as if the heavens themselves had been wounded.
For a fleeting moment, silence reclaimed the world—then came the aftershock.
A low, rolling thud that rattled the bones and sent dust raining from distant cliffs.
Even the explosion’s echo refused to fade, lingering for miles like a grim reminder of the night’s event.
Kei Xun watched with wide-open eyes as she anticipated the scene that would unfold once the cloud of dust dissipated. She was protected by a barrier and was completely safe despite levitating so near to the source of the destruction.
’Is he dead…?’ She thought, hoping to see Rex’s lifeless remains beyond the cloud of dust.
Or at least, survive but wounded enough for him to be an easy meal for the Immortal Slugs again.
Now that the trial was over, the pressure was lifted from the Immortal Slugs.
For dragging them into the mess, the Immortal Slugs would certainly not sit still.
Kei Xun would be sure to watch if that were to ever happen—Rex being devoured completely whole.
“I… I don’t see him anywhere…” She muttered, eyes glowing golden.
Beyond the veil of dust, she noticed that there was no sign of Rex in sight.
Her lips curled when she assumed that Rex might’ve been evaporated completely by the blood sphere.
Other than a massive crater that was a few hundred meters deep and miles wide, there was nothing else to see. Rex was nowhere to be seen—there was not even a trace of his presence. It was at that moment that Kei Xun laughed.
Even though she anticipated this moment to come, feeling it directly was an entirely different matter.
It was invigorating and made her tummy tingle.
“Had you heed my warning, you wouldn’t have ended up—like this,” Kei Xun muttered, looking up at the sky as if she were talking with Rex’s spirit. “Despite your talent, you’re still unfit to become a Scion, not even close. Like me… we both are unfit to participate in the race to invincibility.”
Alana looked at Kei Xun, who was laughing at Rex’s demise, from behind.
She exhaled through her nose, feeling complicated.
Rex caused their sanctuary to be shattered from a misunderstanding, and Alana hated him for it, but this moment provides no pleasure. As opposed to highlighting Rex getting what he deserved, this moment highlighted how far Kei Xun had fallen.
In this moment, Rex proved that he was a formidable candidate.
Kei Xun, on the other hand, proved the complete opposite.
’Her mind is no longer salvageable,’ Alana sighed, averting her gaze. ’Unlike you, who surrendered at the face of a challenge, Rex did not. In reality, he’s fit to be a candidate for invincibility, while you… Divine Saintess, are not.’
Just as Alana was about to leave, she noted Kei Xun’s elation had halted abruptly.
Frowning, Alana turned to look again and found Kei Xun staring down in utter shock.
She followed her gaze.
Before she even looked, she already knew what she would see for Kei Xun to be that shocked.
As expected, Alana’s eyes fixed on someone who was climbing out of the fissure.
From the depths of the fissure, a single bloodied hand—clawed its way up. Fingers dug into the broken stone, trembling yet unyielding. Slowly, agonizingly, Rex pulled himself out of the darkness with one strong pull.
His grip cracked the ground as his body emerged, drenched in blood and the scent of burned earth.
A gasp escaped Alana’s mouth when his figure came into view.
It wasn’t the towering silhouette of a beast that surfaced—but the tattered shell of a man.
Rex reverted to his Human form.
More than that, what remained of his body was a grotesque testament to survival. His flesh was torn and punctured in dozens of places; ribbons of muscle hung loose—from his sides. Half of his stomach was simply gone, a hollow cavity of crimson ruin.
His right arm had been severed at the shoulder, and one of his eyes was crushed.
Nothing more than a bleeding hollow.
Deep lacerations carved his skin as though clawed by a thousand blades.
And blood—thick, steaming blood coated him from head to toe.
For someone who faced the Altar of Gods trial, he was in great condition.
After all, he survived.
It was impossible, but it happened.
He had faced the blood sphere—a trial that nobody alive has ever dared to face and walked away with his chin held high and breathing. Rex’s chest heaved with labored breaths. Each inhale trembled on the edge of death, but even so, his red eye glowed faintly through the curtain of blood masking his face.
As he looked around, a grin split his lips.
A twisted and defiant grin that pictured exactly what he was feeling inside.
Total triumph.
“Hahaha…” A rough chuckle escaped him, rising into a cackle that echoed through the desolate, broken land. The sound was hoarse, unsteady, but filled with dark amusement. “I survived… Even though it’s hard to believe, I really survived.”
Rex’s body swayed under its own weight, trembling as every cell in his body screamed exhaustion.
But falling wasn’t his style.
Against all odds, all pain, and all expectations—Rex remained standing.
Even though he was completely overwhelmed and outclassed by the blood sphere, by the trial, by the entity behind the Blood Moon Echo’s source of power—he remained standing. Notifications appeared in his vision, but Rex stared at his own hands.
In it, there was a flicker of energy that was different from everything he had.
“Had it not been for this, I would’ve died there…” Rex shook his head.
But regardless, he looked up and exhaled in relief, basking in the thrilling sensation inside.
