The Innkeeper

Chapter 2513: Monsters in the backyard

Lex took in a deep breath once Murderer was done imprinting the ability, prepared himself, and then activated the ability. Out of any other realm, the Midnight realm should be the one he understood best because it was the one in which he lived, not to mention the one he was constantly developing.

In fact, he expected that his affinity for the Midnight realm would be excellent. This wasn’t because of the system, but because the time used to speed up the development of the realm came out of his body! Oh, and also because of Lotus.

He did not know if his development of the realm itself would get him any brownie points with the Midnight realm because all of that was done through the system.

The moment he used the ability, his expectations were confirmed. He immediately began to see from the very laws all around him that his affinity with the realm was quite high! Besides the reasons he already suspected, one of the main reasons was that Lex had absorbed so many of the resources grown from within the realm - moreover he had done it in a relatively sustainable way.

The Chaos resin, the Heavenly tree, the numerous valuable treasures and resources that the Midnight realm gave birth to that he absorbed reduced his friction with the Midnight realm.

He had only begun to study the affinities and aversion of the realm when he noticed something unexpected. Lex froze, and flew into the sky.

Far away, in a distant corner of the Midnight realm, beyond the boundaries of the Midnight Inn, there was a portion of the realm that was strongly averse to him. It didn’t quite make sense so he studied it some more.

He knew that there were portions of the realm which had a different set of operational laws - for example the parts of the realm that existed within 2D. Well, it seemed like there was one such area of the realm with a particular and distinct aversion to him.

The thing was, though, that it wasn’t even him specifically who was the subject of that aversion. Everything else in the realm that the realm itself normally supported was rejected by that one segment of the realm.

That was strange, until something suddenly clicked in his mind. Before getting caught up with Daekol and everything else that involved, Lex had sensed a hidden danger within the realm - one that he couldn’t pinpoint himself.

Now it seemed that this hidden danger originated from this one point in the realm that was averse to him.

Lex raised an eyebrow and wondered if he should check it out. He had a lot of things to do, but simply investigating shouldn’t take too long.

Lex teleported away, crossing the entire length of the Midnight Inn and appearing in the far corner of the realm. At the very edge of the Menara continent, the receding Chaos Sea had caused the birth of an archipelago with thousands of islands.

For now, they weren’t populated, but the conditions here were great, and it was only a matter of time before someone moved in. More important, however, was that his target was something underneath this section of the continent.

He entered his Soulstate and slipped through the ground, descending into the world underneath. Lex had figured out long ago that there was one massive underground world in the Midnight realm, made up of massive tunnels and caverns that connected all the continents, and was spread out even beyond.

Much of it was naturally formed, but many of the tunnels were formed as a result of the movement of the World Serpent - one of the Midnight realm’s natural Mythical creatures.

This underground world had its own unique flora and fauna, and Lex had explored it occasionally but never spent too much time there. At one point, he made a mental note to expand the Inn itself to the underground caverns beneath it, but never got around to it since there wasn’t a specific need for it.

Now, as Lex descended through the ground, he entered an area of those underground caverns that he had never seen before, nor had he ever known about. A thick, unknown ore formed a complete sphere around a specific tunnel, shielding the inside from the outside to the point where even Lex’s senses could not pierce through the ore.

That in itself was alarming. Now, as a Celestial Immortal, there were very few things that could impede his senses, and he had not expected to find a raw ore in his own backyard capable of doing just that!

Though, Lex supposed that this ore was recently evolved due to the development of the realm. Previously, it was probably of a lower rarity.

Once Lex broke through that thick ore vein, he discovered that his senses weren’t the only thing that the ore vein was blocking! The energy inside this region was dark, evil and unnatural.

That was not just a matter of speech - Lex was certain that this kind of corrupted and tainted energy did not form on its own.

Lex expanded his spirit sense to search the area and immediately encountered countless monsters. Well, they were called Abyssals now, as far as he knew. It made sense that an area filled with complete darkness would birth Abyssals, but the ones being born here were pathetically weak.

After all, Abyssals are all born weak, and grow stronger based on the amount of time they spend in the darkness, or on what they devour. Well, the circumstances here didn’t allow them to survive for long or even devour anything, for they were far from alone down here.

The cavern was filled with other, unnatural creatures - creatures that Lex had encountered before.

When Lex first entered the Midnight realm, as he was developing and exploring the place, he ran into a centipedal monster that was both gruesome and difficult to deal with. Well, this cavern was filled with thousands of them - though that’s not what surprised him. What surprised him was that all of those centipedal monsters were in the Celestial realm!
