Chapter 2: Chapter 2: The Transmigrator’s Gamble

The storm raged through the night.

Lightning fractured the sky, illuminating the attic bedroom where the younger kids lay huddled beneath a faded patchwork quilt. With every crack of thunder, five-year-old Lily flinched into her pillow, but the steady presence of her older brother perched at the edge of the mattress kept the terror at bay.

Out in the hallway, Emily stood watching from the doorway.

When Eric quietly clicked the latch shut, she caught his sleeve. Her fingers were icy.

"Are you sure about this, Eric?" she whispered, dark circles bruising the skin under her eyes. "Six hundred thousand credits is impossible. Maybe... we take what we can carry and run. We could sneak onto a frontier cargo freight before sunrise."

Eric looked at her exhausted face and gently shook his head.

"The syndicate has eyes on every checkpoint out of the district," he said softly. "Out there, we’re outlaws with no roof, no money, and no defense against wild beasts. Trust me on this. It’s going to be fine."

Emily’s shoulders dropped. She nodded weakly, offering a strained sigh before retreating to her room.

Left alone in the quiet corridor, Eric leaned back against the wall and let out a slow breath.

To anyone watching, he looked like a reckless teenager gambling with impossible odds. But Eric held a secret no living soul in this world knew.

He wasn’t originally from here.

Eighteen years ago, on a world called Earth, a freak accident after a brutal double shift had ended his life. Instead of an afterlife, he’d opened his eyes as a newborn left on the rotting steps of Sunshine Home. For nearly two decades, he had survived as a mortal slum kid, studying the perilous rules of a reality governed by beast tamers.

*Every transmigrator protagonist in those light novels gets a golden finger at awakening, right?* Eric thought, a grim smirk touching the edge of his mouth. *A system, a glitch, a cheat code... It better show up. Because if it doesn’t, I am completely, utterly fucked.*

By morning, the storm had broken.

Golden light flooded the sprawling streets of Riverdale, washing away the gloom of the night before.

The city was a striking fusion of high tech and arcane craft. Sleek mag-lev trains hummed along elevated rails powered by pulsing mana cores. Runic streetlamps faded with the sunrise, while mana-propelled transports carved white streaks through the upper atmosphere. Gleaming crystal-steel towers dominated the inner district, casting long shadows over the cobblestones and weathered brick of the lower wards.

Downstairs, the scent of warm oat porridge and toasted coarse bread filled the kitchen.

Eric laced his boots, zipped his jacket, and stepped toward the front door.

"I’m heading out," he called. "Wish me luck."

The kids instantly dropped their spoons and scrambled around him.

"Good luck, big brother!" Lily beamed, waving both hands.

"Go awaken an S-rank talent!" twelve-year-old Mark yelled, throwing a wild punch into the air.

Emily wiped her hands on her apron and stepped forward, offering a soft smile that barely hid her worry. She squeezed his shoulder. "Do your best, Eric. No matter what rank you get... you’re already our hero."

"Thanks. I’ll come back with good news."

Leaving Sunshine Home behind, Eric joined the flow of pedestrians heading toward the city center.

The municipal plaza buzzed with electric energy. In its center rose the Awakening Hall, a colosseum of pale marble inlaid with towering blue mana crystals. Hundreds of eighteen-year-olds filed into orderly queues. Noble heirs stood in tailored runic armor with personal guards, while commoners from public academies clustered together, whispering nervously.

Eric stepped up to the registry desk beneath the main archway.

"Name?" the clerk asked, her stylus poised over a glowing data-slate.

"Eric. Sunshine Home Orphanage."

She flicked the screen. A green pulse confirmed his citizen chip. "Confirmed. Section D, middle tier."

Tapping her earpiece, she murmured to the coordinator, "All 247 registered candidates accounted for, Director. Ready on your mark."

Inside the grand chamber, tiered seating sloped down toward a glowing circular dais carved with spatial runes. At the center of the platform stood an imposing monolith of star-black ore, the Awakening Stone.

*KZZZT.*

Audio feedback crackled through the overhead arrays, cutting through the chatter in an instant.

A sharp-featured officer in an imperial uniform stepped onto the podium. His presence carried the suffocating, heavy pressure of a high-tier combat Tamer.

"Attention, candidates!" his voice boomed across the chamber. "The Awakening Ceremony commences in five minutes!"

Silence clamped down on the hall.

Hundreds of youths gripped their armrests, holding their breath. Some muttered frantic prayers; others stared hungrily at the black monolith.

Sitting in Section D, Eric felt the hairs on his neck stand on end. A sudden, prickling warmth ignited deep within his chest, throbbing in rhythm with the star-stone below.

His heart thudded against his ribs.

*Thump. Thump. Thump.*

Eric locked his eyes onto the glowing platform, his knuckles tightening white against his knees.

*Here it comes.*
