Chapter 1: Chapter 1: The Weight of Tomorrow

The rotting wooden door of Sunshine Orphanage rattled violently on its rust-eaten hinges as a steel-toed boot slammed against the wood.

*BANG.*

Plaster dusted down from the ceiling beams, coating the worn furniture in a gray film. Outside, a summer storm lashed the cracked windowpanes, but inside the main hall, the air was far more suffocating.

"Time’s up, Emily!"

Scarface Vane, a goon for the local Iron-Tooth Syndicate, stepped over the threshold, shaking the rain from his coat. He was a broad, boar-necked brute with a jagged scar running from ear to jaw, his iron-tipped cane striking a rhythmic thud against the floorboards. Flanking him were three hulking men in studded leather, their bloodshot eyes scanning the rundown place with open contempt.

Standing between the thugs and the bedroom hallway was Emily.

At twenty-four, she was far too young to bear the crushing weight of a dying orphanage. Her hands trembled against her faded floral apron, her face pale as chalk, but her feet stayed planted.

Behind her skirt, five children cowered in silence, the youngest clutching a one-eared stuffed rabbit, the oldest biting his lip until it bled.

"V-Vane, please," Emily said, her voice strained. "The city welfare grant was delayed again... Just give us until the end of the season. I’m taking on extra tailoring work at night. I can pay the interest, I promise—"

"I don’t give a damn about your tailoring," Vane snapped, stepping forward. His boots ground broken plaster into the floor.

He pulled a crumpled stack of documents from his coat. "The interest piled up. You owe five hundred thousand credits. Cash. Today. The boss wants his money, or he wants the deed so we can level this place for a warehouse."

Emily gasped. "Five hundred thousand?! The original loan was fifty thousand three years ago to fix the winter heating!"

"Compound interest, sweetheart. Welcome to the real world."

Behind Vane, a greasy thug with rotten teeth leaned in, eyes lingering on the trembling kids.

"You know, Vane... if she can’t pay cash, the brats could fetch a decent sum on the black market," the goon muttered. "Black-iron mines down south always need small hands. Or nobles looking for unregistered servants. Either way, we clear the debt."

Emily’s blood ran cold. She threw her arms wide, shielding the children behind her. "Don’t you dare touch them!"

"Step aside, lady, before we start breaking fingers," the greasy goon growled, lunging for her collar.

*Clink.*

The frigid, heavy tip of an iron fire poker pressed hard against the side of his windpipe.

"Touch her, and you’re dead," a flat, chilling voice rasped from the dark.

The room went dead silent.

Emerging from the shadow of the hallway was Eric.

Eighteen years old, dressed in a patched gray hoodie and scuffed boots, his messy black hair framed a pair of sharp, dark eyes. He was lean and underweight from years of passing his rations to the younger kids, but the grip he held on the iron rod was rock-steady.

"Eric!" Emily gasped. "Get back, they’re—"

"It’s fine, Sis." Eric pushed the blunt iron half an inch deeper into the thug’s throat, forcing the man to swallow hard and freeze.

Eric stepped past Emily, shielding his family.

"You want money," Eric said, his tone devoid of panic. "You’ll get it."

Vane raised an eyebrow, amused. "You? A charity-case orphan? Where are you getting half a million credits, brat? Scrapping through trash heaps?"

"The Awakening Ceremony is tomorrow," Eric replied, keeping his guard raised. "Once I awaken, I’ll pay."

Turning eighteen was the world’s ultimate dividing line. Tomorrow, the ritual would unlock the Status Panel and grant access to a Beast Taming Space. In a realm where humans could cultivate energy with a contracted magical beast, awakening a decent Talent was the only ticket out of the gutter.

Vane let out a loud, barking laugh.

"You think you’re gonna awaken something useful?!" Vane wheezed, wiping a mock tear. "Fodder bloodlines breed fodder Talents! What are you gonna tame, a Sewer Rat? You’ll be lucky if you don’t awaken an F-rank ’Farmer’!"

Eric didn’t flinch. He didn’t yell. He simply met Vane’s gaze with an icy, calculating focus that gradually swallowed the goon’s laughter.

"Give me one month," Eric said evenly. "Six hundred thousand credits. The full five hundred thousand, plus twenty percent for the delay."

Vane’s grin faded. A screaming kid was predictable; a desperate teenager making cold business calculations was dangerous. Five hundred thousand was good, but six hundred thousand meant a clean promotion. And if the kid failed, the land and the children weren’t going anywhere.

"One month," Vane growled, pointing a thick finger at Eric’s chest. "Not a day more. If the money isn’t in my hand..."

His voice dropped into a sinister whisper.

"...we take the kids, break both your legs, and leave you in the mud to watch them get hauled away."

Vane wheeled around and motioned to his men. "Let’s go. Let the hero have thirty days."

The front door slammed shut behind them, leaving only the sound of rain drumming against the roof.

The moment the footsteps faded, Emily collapsed to her knees, burying her face in her hands. The children rushed to her, clinging to her dress in tears.

"Eric... what have you done?" Emily whispered, her eyes red. "Six hundred thousand credits... even official C-rank Tamers take months of hunting lethal beasts to earn that. If your talent rank is low tomorrow..."

Eric rested the fire poker against the wall, walked over, and knelt beside them, pulling Emily and the younger children into his arms.

"Don’t worry," Eric murmured softly, watching the lightning flicker through the glass. "I won’t let them touch any of you. I swear it."

Tomorrow at the central plaza, his fate will be decided.

He didn’t know it yet, but the rigid laws governing this world were about to break violently in his favor.
