The Hero Given to the Demon Queen
Chapter 2: The Bridal Chamber
The corridors of the demon citadel were silent except for the soft drag of Elara’s bare feet across cold black stone. Commander Thalira walked behind her, one gloved hand firm on her shoulder, guiding her without urgency. The iron cuffs had been removed, but the absence of chains did nothing to lessen the weight pressing down on her chest.
They stopped before a pair of tall doors carved with twisting serpents and open-mouthed roses. Thalira pushed them open.
The chamber beyond was vast and dimly lit by floating crimson crystals. A massive bed dominated the center, draped in black silk and silver embroidery. The air smelled of night-blooming flowers and something darker, like old incense and cold metal. On a low stand near the bed lay a gown of pure black silk, so fine it seemed to drink the light, its neckline and sleeves edged in delicate silver thread.
“Strip,” Thalira ordered, voice flat.
Elara’s hands curled into fists. “I won’t—”
The commander’s grey eyes cut to her. “The Queen was clear. You are not to be harmed. Yet. Do not test how far that protection extends when she is not present.”
For a long moment Elara stood frozen. Then, with shaking fingers, she began to remove the last of her ruined clothes. The tunic fell first, then the trousers. She crossed her arms over her chest, face burning, blue eyes fixed on the floor.
Thalira’s gaze lingered with cold appraisal before she picked up the black gown and held it out.
“Put it on.”
The silk was cool and heavy against Elara’s skin. It clung to her body as though made for her, the fabric whispering over her breasts and hips. There were no undergarments. The gown left her shoulders bare and dipped low at the back. When Thalira fastened the last clasp at the nape of her neck, Elara felt more exposed than when she had been naked.
“Sit,” Thalira said, pointing to the edge of the bed.
Elara obeyed. The commander left without another word, the heavy doors closing behind her with a deep, final sound. The lock turned.
Silence.
Elara sat rigidly, hands clenched in the black silk, staring at the far wall. Her heart hammered so hard she could hear it in her ears. Every part of her wanted to run, to claw at the doors, to scream until her throat tore. Instead she remained still, breathing in short, shallow bursts.
The doors opened again.
Queen Lilith entered alone.
She had changed as well. The formal gown from the battlefield was gone, replaced by a long, sleeveless robe of deep crimson that parted slightly with each step, revealing glimpses of pale skin and the curve of her hip. Her red hair was unbound, falling in loose waves down her back. Those crimson eyes found Elara immediately and did not look away.
Lilith closed the doors herself and turned the lock.
“Stand,” she said quietly.
Elara rose on unsteady legs. The black silk whispered around her ankles.
Lilith approached without haste. She stopped close enough that Elara could feel the faint heat of her body. One elegant hand rose and brushed a strand of golden hair away from Elara’s face. The touch was almost gentle.
“You look as I imagined,” Lilith murmured. “Fragile. Bright. Mine.”
Elara’s throat tightened. “Please… don’t do this.”
Lilith’s fingers trailed down the side of her neck, over her collarbone, and rested lightly against the upper swell of her breast through the silk. “Be quiet.”
“I—I don’t want—”
“I said be quiet.” The words were soft, but there was iron beneath them. “I have waited long enough. Your people sang songs about your courage while they sharpened the knife they used to cut you free of them. Do not insult me by pretending you still have a choice.”
Lilith’s hand slid lower, cupping Elara’s breast fully through the thin fabric. Her thumb brushed slowly across the peak. Elara flinched hard, a broken sound escaping her throat. Tears spilled over and ran down her cheeks.
“Please,” she whispered. “Please, I can’t… I’ve never—”
“I know.” Lilith’s voice remained calm, almost thoughtful. She leaned in, lips nearly brushing Elara’s ear. “That is part of the pleasure.”
Her other hand found the silver clasp at the back of the gown. With a quiet click it released. The black silk loosened and began to slip from Elara’s shoulders. Lilith guided it down slowly, deliberately, baring pale skin inch by inch. The gown caught at her elbows, leaving her breasts exposed to the cool air of the chamber.
Elara’s breathing turned ragged. She tried to cover herself, but Lilith caught both of her wrists in one hand and pinned them gently yet firmly against her own chest.
“Look at me.”
Elara’s blue eyes, shining with tears, lifted reluctantly.
Lilith studied her face for a long moment. The trembling. The silent, desperate tears. The way her entire body shook as though it might come apart. Something flickered in the Queen’s crimson gaze—irritation, perhaps, or a colder kind of calculation.
She released Elara’s wrists.
The black gown slipped the rest of the way to the floor, pooling around Elara’s bare feet. She stood completely naked now, arms wrapped tightly around herself, shoulders shaking with silent sobs.
Lilith exhaled slowly through her nose. For a moment she simply looked at the girl she had claimed. Then she stepped back.
“Enough for tonight.”
Elara’s head jerked up, disbelief and fragile hope warring on her face.
Lilith’s expression had cooled into something unreadable. “You are more broken than I expected. I will not force a sobbing wreck on my first night. It would be… unsatisfying.” She turned toward the door. “Sleep. Or weep. I do not care which. The doors will remain locked. If you harm yourself, Commander Thalira will be given permission to discipline you as she sees fit. Do you understand?”
Elara could only nod, tears still falling.
Lilith paused with her hand on the door. Without looking back, she added quietly, “You belong to me now, Elara. Body and whatever remains of your spirit. That will not change because I choose to wait a little longer.”
The door opened. Closed. The lock turned with a heavy, final sound.
Elara stood alone in the center of the vast chamber, naked, the black bridal gown discarded at her feet like a shed skin. For several heartbeats she did not move. Then her legs gave out. She sank to the cold floor, arms wrapped around her knees, golden hair spilling forward to hide her face.
The sobs came hard and helpless.
“Why…?” The word cracked in the empty room. “Why did you give me to her? I fought for you… I bled for you… What did I do wrong?”
No answer came. Only the soft crackle of the crimson crystals and the distant, endless silence of the citadel.
Elara pressed her forehead to her knees and wept until her voice was gone, the same questions turning over and over in her mind like a blade that refused to dull.
Where am I?
Why did they sell me?
How do I get out of here?
And beneath it all, colder and heavier than the rest:
What will she do to me tomorrow?
