The Game Where I Was Rank One Became Reality

Chapter 457: The Paranoia Blooms

The Ministry of Whispers did not sleep, and neither did its Director.

Lyss Myrvalis sat alone in the highest office of the obsidian spire, surrounded by towering stacks of logistical reports, demographic audits, and raw intelligence dispatches. Her scales, once a vibrant, gleaming crimson, had dulled to an exhausted, bruised purple. Her eyes were deeply sunken, bracketed by the permanent shadows of chronic insomnia.

She had not slept for more than three consecutive hours since the intelligence war of Arc 10. The trauma of Vaelthorn’s invisible sleeper agents had broken a fundamental piece of her psyche. She no longer viewed the world as a complex geopolitical ecosystem; she viewed it as a sterile, binary equation. There was the Sovereign’s absolute perfection, and there was the rot trying to consume it.

Her tail flicked rhythmically against the stone floor. Thump. Thump. Thump.

The sound was a nervous tic she had developed years ago, a physical manifestation of a mind constantly scanning for threats.

Currently, Lyss was obsessively cross-referencing the central Archive’s access logs against the authorized operational mandates of the last decade. It was tedious, paranoid work that should have been delegated to a junior clerk, but Lyss trusted absolutely no one.

Her claw traced a long line of numerical data on a heavy parchment ledger. She stopped.

She stared at the numbers. The rhythmic thumping of her tail ceased instantly.

An algorithmic anomaly.

Two years ago, in Year 992 AF, a highly restricted geopolitical file regarding the Korthane Hegemony’s military metallurgy had been accessed from the deep physical vaults. According to the log, it was accessed under a Category-B authorization mask, typically used by regional prefects.

But the physical weight displacement sensors in the vault corridor—sensors Lyss had installed secretly, off the official blueprint—recorded the physical mass of the operative who entered the vault.

Seventy-four kilograms.

The regional prefects authorized for Category-B access were all Imperial Guardsmen or senior bureaucrats, none of whom weighed less than ninety kilograms. Seventy-four kilograms was exactly the weight of a slight, unarmored scholar.

It was exactly the weight of Sera Myrvalis.

Lyss sat perfectly still in the dim light of her office. The air suddenly felt suffocatingly thin.

Her own blood. Her chosen successor. Sera had bypassed the Ministry’s operational hierarchy to access classified Korthane intelligence off the books.

Lyss’s shattered mind immediately began to process the anomaly, but it did not process it objectively. Her paranoia acted as a flawless, terrifying filter. She did not ask why Sera was looking for Korthane intelligence. She only asked who Sera was working for.

Lyss pulled Sera’s operational files from the last seven years.

Year 988 AF: Sera travels to the ruined Sector Seven condenser facility without an escort.Year 992 AF: Sera accesses the Korthane metallurgical files.Year 993 AF: Sera submits a highly critical, unsolicited analysis suggesting the Cult Splinter is not a localized heresy, but a Korthane-funded proxy insurgency.

Lyss looked at the timeline. To a sane operative, the timeline proved Sera was a brilliant, dedicated intelligence officer who had successfully connected the threads of a massive conspiracy.

But to Lyss Myrvalis, the timeline proved something entirely different.

Sera was attempting to legitimize the Cult Splinter. By classifying the starving, disorganized Rootist heresy as a Korthane-backed insurgency, Sera was attempting to draw the Ministry’s attention away from the real threats. She was creating a ghost army to waste Ministry resources.

Lyss felt a cold, crushing certainty settle over her. Sera had been turned. A Korthane handler had gotten to her years ago, likely during her unprotected field work in the east, and had turned her into a sleeper agent designed to cripple the Ministry with false intelligence.

Lyss touched a silver rune on her desk.

Within two minutes, the heavy oak doors to her office opened. Three senior operatives entered. They were Lyss’s most trusted loyalists, the absolute inner circle of the Ghost School. They wore blank, expressionless masks of hardened leather.

"Director," the lead operative said, bowing deeply.

Lyss did not look at them. She kept her eyes fixed on the ledger.

"The Sovereign’s peace is maintained through the absolute purity of the Ministry," Lyss said softly, her voice carrying the chilling, philosophical weight of the Ghost Doctrine. "If a limb becomes necrotic, it must be amputated. Even if it is a limb you cherish."

The operatives remained perfectly silent. They had learned years ago that offering unsolicited opinions to the Director was a fatal error.

Lyss slowly looked up. Her sunken, exhausted eyes locked onto the lead operative.

"If an operative of noble lineage—a member of one of the founding families—were discovered to be operating a shadow network designed to feed false intelligence into the Archives, how would you proceed?"

It was a subtextual loyalty test. Lyss was watching their microscopic physiological responses.

The lead operative did not hesitate. He understood the subtext. He understood the stakes. "Treason carries no exemptions for lineage, Director. The rot must be excised. Silently, and permanently."

"Even if the traitor was a Myrvalis?" Lyss asked, her voice dropping to a terrifying whisper.

The three operatives stiffened, a cold spike of fear shooting through them. They were suddenly standing on the edge of a precipice. If they defended Sera, Lyss would immediately classify them as co-conspirators. They would be executed before they left the room.

"The name is irrelevant, Director," the lead operative replied, his voice flat, perfectly hiding his terror. "The Sovereign’s law is absolute. The mandate is execution."

Lyss stared at him for five long seconds. Then, the tension broke.

"Correct," Lyss breathed. She felt a profound, tragic heroism wash over her. She was not a monster murdering her own family. She was a martyr, sacrificing her own blood on the altar of the Imperium’s safety. She was protecting Zephyr.

Lyss pulled a heavy sheet of black-edged vellum from her desk drawer.

This was not a bureaucratic reprimand. This was an Alpha-level kill order. It bypassed the Judiciary entirely. It authorized the immediate, silent execution of a high-value target by any means necessary, with no requirement for interrogation or trial.

She picked up her iron pen. Her hand was perfectly steady. The paranoia had completely insulated her from any guilt or grief. The tragic necessity of the act sanitized the murder.

Target: Sera Myrvalis.Classification: Korthane Sleeper Agent.Parameters: Lethal. Silent. Complete immolation of physical remains.

Lyss signed her name at the bottom of the vellum. She pressed her Director’s seal into a pool of black wax, binding the mandate in the absolute authority of the Sovereign.

She held the black envelope out to the lead operative.

"You will lead the strike team," Lyss commanded, her voice devoid of any emotion. "She is currently operating in the western archives. You will intercept her before she returns to the capital. Do not attempt to capture her. Do not speak to her. She is a Korthane asset. Terminate the infection."

The lead operative stepped forward and took the envelope. He did not look at the name on the warrant. He did not need to.

"By the Sovereign’s will," the operative said, bowing again.

The three ghosts backed out of the office, the heavy oak doors sealing shut behind them.

Lyss Myrvalis was alone again.

She stood up from her desk and walked to the massive, arched window overlooking the sprawling, soot-stained capital of Ashenveil. The eternal fires of the foundries burned in the distance, casting a dull red glow across the sky.

Lyss placed her scaled hand against the cold glass.

She had done it. She had rooted out the most dangerous Korthane spy in the capital. She had saved the Ministry from internal collapse. The Cult Splinter was nothing more than a disorganized, starving mob of laborers, and she had successfully eliminated the Korthane agent trying to convince the Imperium otherwise.

"I have secured the line, Sovereign," Lyss whispered to the empty room, truly, absolutely believing her own delusion. "The peace is safe."

Below the spire, the strike team dispersed into the shadows, officially fracturing the Ministry of Whispers. The Sovereign’s intelligence apparatus was now actively hunting the only operative who was actually trying to stop the Korthane Hegemony.

And in the east, fueled by the Arbiter’s untraceable weaponry and broken by Zephyr’s crushing quotas, the Rootist civil war was finally ready to ignite.
