The Game Where I Was Rank One Became Reality
Chapter 456: he Chessboard Widens
The Arbiter stood at the head of a massive, polished obsidian table in the central strategy spire of the Korthane Hegemony. He was a being of absolute, flawless law—a Rank 9 deity whose physical form was a tall, imposing man cast entirely in brushed steel and dark velvet.
He did not radiate the crushing, localized pressure of Zephyr. The Arbiter’s power was logistical. It was found in the ink of treaties, the flow of currency, and the terrifying, grinding weight of Korthane’s military-industrial complex.
Before him, projected in a glowing blue schematic across the obsidian table, was a comprehensive economic map of the Sovereign Imperium’s eastern grid.
"The intelligence from the eastern sector is confirmed, my lord," the Chief Analyst stated, standing rigidly at the opposite end of the table. He was a mortal man, clad in the sharp, geometric uniform of Korthane High Command, sweating lightly under the Arbiter’s unblinking gaze. "Our proxy strike on Sector Seven was a tactical success. The primary Faith Point condenser was vaporized."
"The kinetic reality of the strike is irrelevant," the Arbiter replied, his voice a smooth, legalistic baritone that carried perfectly through the vast room. "The objective was not the destruction of glass and iron. The objective was the disruption of the Iron Sovereign’s ascension timeline. Has the Faith Point deficit caused a measurable delay in his Rank 10 threshold?"
The Chief Analyst swallowed hard. He tapped a crystal data-slate against the edge of the table. The blue schematic shifted, revealing a jagged, upward-trending graph.
"No, my lord," the analyst admitted, the word tasting like failure. "The Sovereign Imperium’s eastern output dipped by twenty-four billion units immediately following the explosion. However, within two fiscal quarters, the output stabilized. Today, it is exceeding pre-strike projections."
The Arbiter did not frown. He did not slam a fist against the table. Such displays of frustration were systemic inefficiencies.
"Explain the recovery," the Arbiter commanded.
"The Sovereign mandated a twenty percent increase in the integration quotas across all active Cinnaite foundries," the analyst explained, his voice laced with disgust. "He did not retaliate against us. He simply squeezed his own labor force. Our intelligence indicates that the Rootist population in the east is experiencing a catastrophic mortality rate. Men, women, and children are being worked to death to cover the deficit. Zephyr is literally bleeding his own people dry to maintain his math."
Another analyst, a young kobold wearing the silver braiding of the Naval Intelligence Bureau, spoke up, her voice trembling with righteous anger. "The Sovereign is a monster. He is cannibalizing his own demographic foundation. We failed to delay his timeline, but his cruelty guarantees the Imperium will collapse on its own. We need only wait for the Rootists to die out, and his economic engine will stall."
The Arbiter looked at the young kobold. His gaze was not angry, but it was absolute.
"You are applying a biological morality to a mathematical equation," the Arbiter stated coldly. "That is a strategic error, Analyst. Emotional categorization leads to underestimation. The Sovereign is not a monster. He is a tactician who is entirely unburdened by empathy."
The room fell into a terrified silence. The Arbiter turned his attention back to the glowing blue map.
"Our operation was a trap," the Arbiter continued, his voice echoing with profound, chilling respect for his rival. "We destroyed a highly visible piece of infrastructure, banking on the biological probability that the Sovereign would seek revenge. A retaliatory naval strike would have forced him to burn massive amounts of Faith Points, delaying his ascension by decades. Zephyr saw the trap. He recognized that the destruction of the condenser was an economic threat disguised as a military one."
The Arbiter traced a steel finger along the projected supply lines of the eastern grid.
"He chose to sacrifice thousands of his own citizens because mortal lives do not require a Faith Point expenditure to replace. It was the correct tactical decision. It was flawless macro-logic. You will not insult his intelligence by calling him cruel. You will respect his efficiency, because if you do not, he will destroy us."
The Chief Analyst cleared his throat carefully. "If the Sovereign has negated the deficit, my lord, how do we proceed? The Cult Splinter is entrenched, but their sabotage operations are no longer structurally impactful. The Sovereign’s quotas are absorbing the damage."
The Arbiter did not answer immediately. He shifted the projection from the economic grid to a demographic overlay. Millions of tiny red dots appeared across the eastern colonies, representing the Rootist labor force.
He then pulled a secondary data set from his personal archives—a jagged, terrifying waveform recorded eight years ago. The Morreth Seismograph Data.
"The Sovereign is mathematically bound to his Ascension Vigil," the Arbiter explained, his voice dropping into a register of pure, terrifying strategy. "He must initiate the process within a specific five-year window, or the localized temporal distortion generated by the Morreth Entity will shatter his Faith Point reserves. During that Vigil, he will be entirely blind to the kinetic reality of the world. He will not be able to deploy his Heroes. He will not be able to cast miracles."
The Arbiter overlaid the demographic breaking point of the Rootists with the timeline of the Morreth pulse.
The two lines intersected perfectly.
"The Sovereign’s draconian quotas have created a localized political vacuum," the Arbiter stated. "The Rootists are currently experiencing a mortality rate that exceeds their reproduction rate. They are a people without a future. Our sociological models indicate that within seven years, their compliance will break entirely. They will not launch a localized labor strike. They will launch a suicidal, continental rebellion."
The Chief Analyst stared at the converging lines. "A civil war... perfectly timed to peak during his Ascension Vigil."
"Yes," the Arbiter said. "But a rebellion armed with pickaxes and rocks will crash harmlessly against the Imperial Guard. If Zephyr’s military can contain the rebellion without requiring divine intervention, the Sovereign will successfully complete his ascension. We must ensure the rebellion possesses sufficient teeth to tear the Imperium apart from the inside."
The Arbiter raised his hand. A physical, vellum document materialized on the obsidian table. It was an Executive Logistical Decree.
"Initiate Operation Rust," the Arbiter commanded.
The Chief Analyst leaned forward to read the decree. His eyes widened in shock. "My lord... this is authorization for the mass production of our Class-4 anti-magic breaching alloy."
"Correct," the Arbiter said. "You will mobilize the southern foundries immediately. You will forge fifty thousand rapid-cycle bolt throwers and twenty thousand localized explosive charges utilizing the anti-magic alloy. You will cast the weapons to the ergonomic specifications of human and kobold hands. You will strip them of all Korthane heraldry, serial numbers, and magical signatures."
The kobold analyst from Naval Intelligence stared at the Arbiter in horror. "You are authorizing the free distribution of our most classified military hardware to a foreign insurgency? My lord, the logistical cost—"
"The cost is an investment in global equilibrium," the Arbiter interrupted smoothly. "We will pack the weapons in unmarked crates. We will utilize the Sovereign’s own corrupt merchant marine to smuggle them across the border into the eastern grid. We will deliver them directly to the Cult Splinter."
The Arbiter pressed his steel thumb against the bottom of the vellum document, sealing the decree with his divine imprint.
"Zephyr believes he has solved his economic deficit," the Arbiter said, looking at the glowing red dots of the Rootist population. "He does not realize he has simply compressed the explosive yield. We are no longer going to sabotage his machines. We are going to arm his victims. When the Iron Sovereign closes his eyes to ascend, he will wake up to find his empire burning."
