The Fox And The Last Dragon

Chapter 242: Blades, Blood, And The Broken Behemoth

  • Next Chapter

"I’ve been preparing." The King’s six wings spread wider, blocking what little light the lava rivers provided. "Waiting for the moment when the last dragon would have something worth bargaining for."

His pupils dilated, corruption bleeding through ancient irises.

"And now here you stand. Dying and desperate. Exactly where I need—"

The corrupted dragon’s gaze snapped toward Cyrus.

Toward the way crimson energy pulsed stronger now, how the torn wing had straightened slightly, and how blood no longer flowed freely from gaping wounds.

"Clever." The King’s voice dropped to something cold and vicious. "Stalling for your mate to recover. How noble."

His massive claw twisted beneath Kane’s grip—

Then slammed downward with devastating force.

Kane’s foxfire blazed instinctively, but corrupted strength overwhelmed the divine-touched flame.

The impact drove Kane into the volcanic stone so hard that the ground cratered beneath him.

Pain exploded through Kane’s spine.

Rock dust choked his lungs as he gasped, tasting copper and ash.

The Dragon King’s claw remained pressed against Kane’s chest, pinning him in the crater while corruption seeped into the cracks of broken stone.

"Did you think spirit energy would save you?" The dragon’s maw descended until fetid breath washed over Kane’s face.

"Your power only accelerates the poison. Every flame you conjure brings you closer to—"

A roar shattered the chamber.

Crimson dragonfire erupted from behind the King, slamming into corrupted scales with enough force to stagger the massive dragon backward.

Cyrus stood ten feet away, wings fully manifested, golden-red eyes burning with absolute fury.

Blood still matted his dark hair, wounds still carved through his armor, but power radiated from him in waves that made the lava rivers surge higher.

"Touch him again," Cyrus snarled, "and I’ll finish what I started centuries ago."

The Dragon King laughed, corruption dripping from fangs. "You couldn’t kill me then, when you were whole. What makes you think—"

The Dragon King’s taunting died mid-sentence.

Nine silver blades erupted through his chest from behind—each of Kane’s tails sharpened to lethal points, piercing corrupted scales and ancient flesh.

Black ichor sprayed across volcanic stone.

The King’s wings spasmed, corruption flickering as divine-touched foxfire burned through the wounds.

Cyrus’s eyes widened in horror.

"Kane—"

"Yeah, yeah." Kane’s voice came strained but sharp, his nine tails still embedded deep in the dragon’s torso. "Accelerating the poison. Real tragic."

He twisted the blades.

The Dragon King screamed.

"Here’s the thing about dying, though." Kane’s amber eyes blazed molten gold as silver fire consumed more of his spirit core with each passing second. "Means I’ve got nothing left to lose."

His tails drove deeper, spreading wider inside corrupted flesh.

"So how about you shut the fuck up about bargains and inevitability—"

Another violent twist that made the ancient dragon convulse.

"—and choke on the consequences of underestimating a fox."

The Dragon King thrashed, trying to reach behind himself, but Kane’s tails had pierced vital points—pinning wings, shredding muscle, and severing the flow of corrupted power through the King’s massive frame.

Black ichor pooled beneath them both.

The Roaring Shard pulsed in the Dragon King’s chest—a furious crimson heartbeat that sustained the corrupted corpse despite logic, despite time, despite everything that should have ended this creature centuries ago.

Kane’s nine tails drove deeper, pinning the King in place.

With every pulse of the Shard, black ichor sprayed across volcanic stone, but the wounds closed almost as quickly as they opened.

Corrupted flesh knitting together, divine power forcing animation into what should be carrion.

"Cyrus—now!"

The black dragon moved.

Not the cautious circling of someone testing an opponent’s defenses

Just pure lethal intent.

Cyrus’s obsidian form blurred across the chamber, wings propelling him forward with impossible speed despite torn membrane and bloodied scales.

His claws extended, crimson dragonfire coating each talon in flames that made the air scream.

The Dragon King thrashed, trying to dislodge Kane’s embedded tails, but the fox’s grip held firm.

Silver foxfire blazed brighter, burning through corrupted tissue, creating openings—

Cyrus struck.

His claws pierced the King’s chest, driving through putrid scales and rotting muscle, straight toward the pulsing Shard embedded in its ancient sternum.

The impact sent shockwaves rippling through the chamber. Lava rivers surged. Volcanic stone cracked beneath them.

But the Dragon King refused to die.

"Impossible—" Cyrus snarled, crimson energy flaring as his claws closed around the Shard’s jagged edges.

The corrupted dragon’s laugh bubbled through ruined lungs. "Just like before, I survived the realm’s collapse. I survived your seal. I will survive—"

"No." Kane’s voice cut cold through sulfuric air.

Cyrus met Kane’s gaze, the same look they’d shared in the collapsing throne room memory—trust, fear, and unspoken devotion

Kane’s nine tails blazed silver.

Cyrus’s dragonfire erupted crimson.

And for one perfect, impossible moment—

Their powers aligned.

Silver foxfire flowed through Kane’s embedded tails, racing along corrupted flesh like mercury through veins.

Crimson dragonfire surged from Cyrus’s claws, flooding the Dragon King’s chest cavity.

Divine power recognized divine power. Fox and dragon, silver and crimson, chaos and control.

The combined power detonated.

Not fire. Not light. Something beyond both—a pure annihilation that erased corrupted flesh from existence.

The Dragon King’s scream cut off mid-roar as silver-crimson energy consumed him completely.

Scales vaporized. Bone turned to ash. Centuries of corruption simply ceased.

Then the shockwave hit.

Volcanic stone shrieked as fissures spider-webbed across walls. Stalactites crashed down from above, shattering against superheated ground. The lava rivers surged violently, flooding their banks.

Cyrus’s claws closed around the Roaring Shard—freed from its prison of corrupted flesh, still pulsing with furious red light.

The Shard burned against his palm, testing him—but did not reject him."

"Kane!" He spun toward the fox. "We need to—"

The words died in Cyrus’s throat.

Kane sat slumped against crumbling stone, silver fire completely extinguished.

His nine tails lay limp across volcanic rock, their usual luminous quality dimmed to something fragile and gray.

Amber eyes struggled to focus.

"Did we..." Kane’s voice was barely audible over a whisper. "Did it work?"

The ceiling groaned.

A massive chunk of obsidian broke free, plummeting toward Kane’s unprotected form.
