The Fox And The Last Dragon

Chapter 241: Corruption’s Crowned Catastrophe

  • Next Chapter

Kane stepped through the obsidian doorway into a chamber carved from the mountain’s molten heart.

Heat slammed into him. The air was so thick with sulfur and ash it seared his lungs with every breath.

Lava rivers carved glowing paths through black stone, casting everything in flickering crimson and gold.

The ceiling disappeared into darkness somewhere far above, lost in volcanic haze.

But Kane barely registered the environment.

His entire focus locked on the thing in the chamber’s center.

The corrupted Dragon King.

What remained of him, anyway.

The creature towered thirty feet high, its body a grotesque fusion of dragon and divine artifact.

Golden scales had turned black and pustulent, oozing corruption that hissed when it hit molten stone.

Six wings jutted from its back at wrong angles—some skeletal, others still covered in rotting membrane.

And embedded in its chest, pulsing with violent crimson light—

The Roaring Shard.

The fragment had fused directly into the King’s sternum, its jagged edges piercing through corrupted flesh.

Dying draconic wards still clung to the creature’s limbs—chains of ancient magic that flickered and sparked as they deteriorated. Cyrus’s work, centuries old and finally failing.

And Cyrus himself—

The black dragon crashed into volcanic stone twenty feet away, bloodied and battered.

His left wing was bent at an unnatural angle, membrane torn in three places. Scales had been ripped from his chest, exposing raw flesh beneath.

Crimson dragonfire erupted from Cyrus’s jaws, but the blast came weak and desperate.

Kane’s heart burned at the sight of Cyrus crashing into volcanic stone, bloodied and broken.

The corrupted King’s massive claw swept down toward Cyrus’s exposed chest—aiming for the killing blow.

No.

Kane moved.

Not the hesitant scramble of someone still learning their power, but the fluid certainty he’d witnessed in inherited memory.

The same way older Kane had stepped between Cyrus and the Dragon King in that burning throne room.

Silver foxfire erupted around nine blazing tails as Kane launched himself across the chamber.

He landed between Cyrus and the descending claw, both hands thrust upward.

The impact of corrupted flesh meeting divine-touched foxfire sent shockwaves rippling through molten stone.

Kane’s claws dug deep into putrid scales, holding the massive limb at bay through sheer force of will.

"Get away from him," Kane snarled, amber eyes blazing molten gold.

The corrupted King’s six mismatched wings spread wide, pustulent membrane catching crimson light.

Recognition flickered across what remained of intelligent features.

His massive head lowered until Kane could see every corrupted scale, every weeping crack where divine power bled through rotting flesh.

"Little fox." The voice rumbled with terrible gentleness, layered with recognition that made Kane’s fur stand on end. "You came back."

Kane’s claws dug deeper into corrupted flesh, holding that massive limb steady despite how wrong it felt touching his skin.

"I didn’t come back for you."

"No." A grotesque approximation of a smile twisted features that had once been noble. "You came for him. Just like before."

The King’s gaze shifted past Kane toward where Cyrus struggled to rise from volcanic stone.

"Already dying, little nine-tails. I can smell the synthetic poison eating through your core."

Kane’s breath hitched.

How did—

"Interesting work." The corrupted dragon’s laugh sent sulfuric wind across Kane’s face. "Crude. Effective. You have... what? Days? Hours before your spirit fragments entirely?"

Behind Kane, Cyrus’s voice cut desperate through heated air.

"Kane, leave. I have this under control—"

"You’re bleeding out!" Kane snarled without taking his eyes off the King.

"And you’re accelerating your death!" Cyrus lurched upward despite his shattered wing, crimson energy flickering weakly around bloodied claws.

"Every second you use spirit energy, that compound breaks down faster. Please—"

"Listen to your dragon." The corrupted King’s tail swept lazily through molten stone, sending lava spraying in crimson arcs.

"Or better yet—listen to me."

His pupils dilated, corrupted gold bleeding into the whites of ancient eyes.

"I offer a bargain, fox who shattered the Heart. The same bargain I would have offered centuries ago, had you given me a chance."

Kane’s nine tails blazed brighter, silver foxfire casting dancing shadows across volcanic walls.

"I’m not making deals with—"

"Save yourself." The King’s voice dropped to an intimate whisper that somehow carried over crackling lava flows.

"Leave him to me. Walk away from this chamber, from this island, from the dragon who drags you toward oblivion."

One massive claw gestured toward the Roaring Shard embedded in his chest.

"I will make you whole. Extract the poison. Restore your core to perfection. Give you centuries to master those nine tails properly instead of burning out before you truly live."

The Dragon King’s offer hung in the air like sulfur, heavy and rancid.

Kane’s lips pulled into something sharp and dangerous.

"Not exactly a convincing pitch coming from someone who looks like a rotting garbage disposal nightmare."

He tilted his head, nine tails swishing through superheated air.

"Also, quick question—how are you even alive? Because I’m pretty sure we ended you when the realm collapsed. You know, the whole apocalypse thing?"

Behind Kane, Cyrus shifted against volcanic stone.

The sound was subtle—scales scraping, wings adjusting—but Kane caught it.

Kane noticed how the crimson energy flickered brighter around Cyrus’s bloodied claws and how his breathing evened out despite the torn membrane and exposed flesh.

He’s healing himself.

Kane needed to buy more time.

"Seriously, was there like a warranty on divine corruption? Did the gods offer extended coverage for—"

"You want to know how I survived?" The King’s laughter rumbled through the chamber, sending lava spraying in violent arcs.

"Cyrus kept me alive. Sealed me here when destroying me outright proved... inconvenient."

His corrupted gaze fixed on Kane with terrible recognition.

"Left me to rot beneath this mountain with only the Roaring Shard for company. Centuries of isolation. Centuries of hunger."

The massive head lowered until Kane could see every weeping crack, every pustulent scale.

"Imagine my delight when the Black Dragon’s presence returned to this island. When I sensed that arrogant whelp building wards, playing house with his precious fox."

Kane’s claws dug deeper into corrupted flesh, holding that massive limb steady.

"So you’ve been stewing down here for centuries plotting your big comeback? Cute. Very ’discount final boss.’"
