The Fox And The Last Dragon

Chapter 157: Enhanced Enemies, Expendable Allies

Thick smoke billowed through every corridor, transforming the sterile white hallways into a hellish maze.

The sprinkler system worked overtime, but instead of extinguishing the chaos, it created choking clouds of steam that reduced visibility to mere inches.

Ginsei pressed his back against the wall, ice-blue eyes wide with disorientation.

"I can’t—there are too many heat signatures," he gasped, his serpentine senses completely overwhelmed by the thermal chaos. "Fire sprites, guards, containment fields—it’s all white noise."

His usual precise navigation crumbled under the sensory assault. Where he’d normally detect individual heartbeats and body temperatures, now everything blurred into an incomprehensible wall of heat.

"The facility’s in lockdown mode," Mochi shouted over the alarms, pointing at the shifting walls around them.

Massive steel barriers descended from hidden ceiling slots, sealing off passages they’d just walked through. The corridor ahead contracted, forcing them into a bottleneck.

"It’s trying to trap us. Redirect us where they want us to go."

Cyrus watched the walls close in, his dragon senses tracking Kane’s pendant through the interference.

The facility was herding them like cattle, but Kane was close—somewhere in this maze of shifting metal and synthetic nightmares.

"Then we don’t follow their rules," he growled.

Cyrus spotted a gap where two wall sections hadn’t fully closed—a narrow opening barely wide enough for a person.

He gripped the steel barriers with both hands, dragon strength flowing through his human form.

Metal groaned in protest as he forced the gap wider, muscles straining against hydraulic pressure.

"Get Through. Now!"

Ginsei slipped through first, his serpentine flexibility allowing him to navigate the tight space.

Mochi followed, his cat spirit agility serving him well despite his loaded backpack.

Cyrus squeezed through last, the walls grinding closer as the facility’s systems tried to seal the breach.

They emerged into a corridor thick with smoke and chaos.

Freed spirits scattered in every direction—a blur of fur, feathers, and desperate motion.

Their suppression collars sparked and sputtered, damaged electronics sending erratic pulses through their systems.

A wounded deer spirit stumbled past, her collar smoking as she fled toward an emergency exit.

An owl spirit circled overhead, screeching warnings that triggered more sensor alarms.

"Kane freed them," Cyrus growled, his chest swelling with fierce pride.

But the chaos slowed their progress.

Every few steps, another panicked spirit crashed into them or darted across their path.

Sensors screamed as they detected unauthorized movement in every direction.

"There!" Ginsei pointed through the smoke.

A small figure darted toward them—the same mouse spirit Kane had tried to free, his tiny form barely visible through the haze.

Hope flared in the mouse’s dark eyes as he spotted them.

"Help—"

Three wolves burst from a side corridor, intercepting the small spirit before Cyrus could reach him.

Rough hands seized the mouse’s arms, dragging him back into the smoke as his desperate cries echoed off the walls.

Cyrus lunged forward, but another wave of fleeing spirits blocked his path.

By the time he cleared them, the wolves were gone.

The pendant’s pull jerked erratically against Cyrus’s chest; Kane was moving fast—too fast.

"He’s running," Cyrus growled, his dragon senses straining through the chaos.

Ginsei pressed himself against the wall, tracking heat signatures through the smoke.

"We’re getting closer. I can feel his energy—it’s stronger here."

But every corridor they took collapsed into another dead end.

Steel barriers slammed down just as they approached viable passages, forcing them into narrow maintenance shafts that led nowhere.

Emergency bulkheads sealed off promising routes, redirecting them through a maze of service tunnels.

The facility was actively herding them, playing with them like mice in a laboratory.

Cyrus’s composure cracked. Crimson energy flared around his fists as he faced another blocked passage.

"Enough of this."

He slammed his palms against the steel barrier, dragon strength flowing through his human form. Metal groaned and buckled under the assault but held.

The wall was reinforced—designed to contain far more than escaping spirits.

"Cyrus, wait—" Ginsei started.

"I’m done playing their games!"

Cyrus’s eyes blazed red-gold, his aura crackling with barely restrained fury.

For a heartbeat, his human facade wavered, revealing glimpses of obsidian scales along his jaw.

Mochi grabbed Cyrus’s arm, his cat spirit agility allowing him to dodge the worst of the draconic energy.

"Scaley Daddy, you’ll bring the whole place down!"

Cyrus forced himself to step back, fists trembling with suppressed rage.

A hidden door finally yielded to Ginsei’s lock-picking, revealing another section of the laboratory complex.

This one was different—quieter, more sinister.

Rows of cylindrical pods lined the walls like grotesque cocoons, each filled with murky suspension fluid.

Inside floated half-completed chimeras in various stages of transformation.

A bear spirit whose natural claws had been replaced with metallic talons that sparked with electrical current.

A swan spirit whose wings had been grafted with razor-sharp metal feathers.

Their eyes tracked the trio’s movement, consciousness flickering behind the glass in silent, eternal torment.

"Kane was here," Ginsei hissed, his serpentine senses picking up traces.

Cyrus inhaled deeply, sorting through the chemical stench and horror. Beneath it all—Kane’s scent, sharper with adrenaline and fear.

His gaze swept the lab, stopping at a computer terminal near the far wall. The screen still glowed, displaying cascading data streams.

Cyrus approached the workstation, his dragon senses were detecting residual heat from recent use.

A flash drive port sat empty, its metal surface still warm from contact.

"He downloaded something," Cyrus realized, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.

"He’s ahead of us."

The pendant’s pull shifted direction, leading them toward another corridor.

Just then, heavy footsteps echoed from behind.

"We got company," Ginsei whispered.

Six wolves emerged from the smoke, but these weren’t ordinary guards.

Their movements were fluid and swift, like predators operating beyond normal physical limits.

Veins of luminescent blue pulsed beneath their skin, visible through torn sections of tactical gear.

One wolf’s eyes flickered between natural amber and artificial electric blue, his face twitching as synthetic compounds warred with his natural biology.

Another’s claws had extended far beyond normal proportions, metallic sheens gleaming along the edges where organic material had been replaced.

"Enhanced units," Mochi breathed.

The lead wolf’s mouth twisted into a snarl that revealed teeth filed to razor points.

"Keep the dragon alive," he growled, his voice distorted by whatever chemicals coursed through his system.

"The others are expendable."
