The Fox And The Last Dragon
Chapter 156: Pandemonium And Perversion
The elevator doors split apart to reveal pandemonium in motion.
Alarms shrieked from every speaker, their piercing wails echoing off polished steel walls.
Emergency lights strobed crimson, casting everything in hellish snapshots of red and shadow.
"Well," Mochi chirped, bouncing on his toes as he surveyed the chaos, "someone’s been having fun without us."
Cyrus stepped into the corridor, his pendant blazing hot against his chest.
The tracking spell pulled him forward with such intensity it nearly staggered him.
Kane was moving fast—not being dragged, but running under his own power.
The sterile hallways twisted and branched without logic, designed to confuse intruders.
But Kane’s scent lingered in the recycled air, mixed with fear, determination, and something else that made Cyrus’s jaw clench.
Synthetic compounds. Chemical burns. Pain.
"This way," Ginsei called from ahead, his serpentine senses tracking heat signatures through the walls.
They rounded a corner and froze.
A vast chamber stretched before them, lined floor to ceiling with reinforced glass cells.
Emergency lights strobed red across dozens of trapped spirits, each one pressed against their transparent prisons in various states of horror.
Mochi’s usual stream of chatter died mid-sentence.
"Holy shit," he whispered, his usual theatrical flair cracking. "What the f*ck is this place?"
Cyrus stepped into the chamber, his aura flaring as he took in the nightmare.
Spirits huddled in cramped cells, their natural forms dulled by glowing suppression collars. Fresh injection marks tracked up their arms like silver veins beneath skin.
"This isn’t trafficking," Ginsei breathed, his usual cold detachment wavering. "This is systematic torture."
His Bureau training had exposed him to containment protocols—temporary holding cells designed for dangerous rogues.
But this was something else entirely. The cells were built for permanent imprisonment, the suppression fields calibrated to cause maximum discomfort without killing.
Mochi drifted between the cells, his punk facade cracking as he stared at the captives.
A young raven spirit pressed against the glass near him, black feathers streaked with silver injection marks.
"They’re experimenting on them," Mochi muttered, his voice thick with uncharacteristic horror.
"Changing their essence, twisting their nature—"
A low growl rumbled from Cyrus’s throat.
The temperature in the chamber spiked twenty degrees, emergency lights flickering as his draconic aura pressed against the facility’s magical wards.
"Cyrus." Ginsei’s sharp voice cut through the red haze. "Control yourself."
More cracks spider-webbed across the nearest cell walls. The captive spirits cowered, sensing the raw power radiating from the dragon.
"You bring this place down on our heads, and Kane dies with the rest of them," Ginsei snapped, ice beginning to form around his feet as his own power responded to the threat.
"Is that what you want?"
Cyrus forced himself to breathe, reining in the molten rage that demanded he incinerate everything in sight.
The cracks in the glass stopped spreading, but the air remained superheated.
"Kane was here," he said through gritted teeth. "Recently. His scent is everywhere."
"Then we find him," Ginsei said firmly. "But we do it smart, not angry."
Mochi wiped his eyes with the back of his hand, his usual humor completely absent.
"These spirits, we can’t just leave them here."
"We can’t save them all right now," Ginsei replied, though his voice carried its own note of strain.
"One mission at a time."
Cyrus turned away from the chamber of horrors, the pendant burning against his chest as it pulled him deeper into the facility’s heart.
Each step forward felt like walking into the heart of a nightmare, sterile corridors giving way to laboratories that reeked of synthetic compounds and suffering.
"Through here," Ginsei whispered, his serpentine senses tracking heat signatures beyond the next reinforced door.
The chamber they entered stretched three stories high, dominated by a massive containment tank filled with swirling suspension fluid.
Cyrus stopped dead.
Mochi’s usual chatter died mid-sentence, his punk facade cracking completely.
Even Ginsei, trained for the worst the supernatural world could offer, took an involuntary step backward.
Floating in the tank was a dragon—or something wearing a dragon’s stolen form.
Forty feet of obsidian scales and synthetic muscle, held together by crackling energy conduits that pulsed like artificial veins.
Its massive head twitched spasmodically, empty eye sockets sparking with stolen fire.
But where Cyrus radiated ancient power and draconic majesty, this thing felt wrong—a corpse animated by science and ambition.
The construct twitched, servos whirring beneath artificial flesh.
Unlike the water dragon from the pier, that crude puppet built for a single battle, this abomination was meant to be permanent.
A replacement. A synthetic heir to dragonkind.
Cyrus stepped closer to the tank, his reflection merging with the floating horror.
The stolen scales matched his coloration perfectly. Someone had studied him, catalogued every detail of his true form, and then perverted it into this mechanical nightmare.
"Oh my..." Mochi breathed. "They’re trying to build you."
Ginsei’s ice-blue eyes hardened as he took in the synthetic dragon.
"This violates every supernatural treaty in existence. When this is over, I’m reporting every detail to Commander Qi and the International Spirit Council."
His serpentine nature recoiled from the abomination—the wrongness of it made his skin crawl in ways that decades of Bureau training couldn’t suppress.
Cyrus stared at the floating nightmare, his reflection warping in the curved glass.
He’d known Elias was ambitious, ruthless even. But this level of systematic cruelty defied comprehension.
"I made him," Cyrus whispered, his voice hollow. "All those spirits suffered because I couldn’t see what he was becoming."
Mochi backed away from the tank, his usual punk bravado completely gone.
"Scaley, this isn’t your fault—"
His hands clenched into fists, crimson energy crackling between his fingers.
The temperature in the chamber began to spike, but not from his rage.
Something else was burning.
Fire bloomed somewhere deep in the facility’s heart, and suddenly the overhead sprinkler system activated with violent force.
Freezing water cascaded down, steam hissing where it struck Cyrus’s superheated aura.
"That’s not you," Mochi shouted over the alarms and rushing water, pointing at the ceiling.
"Someone else is cooking this place!"
"Kane," Cyrus breathed, recognition flooding through him.
