“Why is there still another one?” Li Tingzhou swallowed hard, his heart growing tense as well.
“It’s fine. The first two have already been born, so this one should be here soon too.” Wen Xiu had been utterly stunned by her sister-in-law’s productivity—three babies at once.
Even so, she tried to reassure her nervous husband.
She couldn’t help wondering how Li Zhiwei’s tiny belly had managed to hold three children.
At the thought, Wen Xiu touched her own stomach and silently congratulated herself on having only one baby inside. Otherwise, how difficult would that have been?
Everyone was staring anxiously toward the delivery room.
At this point, no one had the mind to worry about whether the second baby was a boy or a girl.
Fortunately, after the time it took for half a stick of incense to burn, the little one hidden inside Li Zhiwei’s belly finally entered the world with a cry.
However, the third baby’s voice was not as strong as the first two.
Instead, it sounded like a tiny kitten, tugging at everyone’s heartstrings.
“Husband, this child…” Wen Xiu said nervously, though she did not dare finish the sentence.
Xu Heming clenched both fists. He suspected that this child was rather frail.
Fortunately, whether it was the Li family or Prince An’s residence, they had the means to help the child grow up safely.
“Young Madam, congratulations. You’ve given birth to another little princess.” Madam Liu looked at the little girl, who was crying like a kitten.
She thought that perhaps the girl had been unable to compete with her two older brothers in the womb and therefore looked much weaker.
“Mother, why is she so small?” Though Li Zhiwei was exhausted, she still glanced at the daughter she had delivered with such difficulty.
There was only one thought in her mind: She was so tiny!
Even her cries sounded like a kitten’s.
“It’s all right. Have Master Jun examine her in a moment.” Knowing what Li Zhiwei was worried about, Lady Yao hurried to comfort her daughter.
“Mother, I’m a little tired.” Li Zhiwei truly was exhausted.
Her eyelids were already growing heavy.
“Oh…”
Lady Yao wanted to urge Li Zhiwei not to fall asleep.
“Madam, let the young lady rest for a while,” Auntie Liu advised from the side.
The room gradually fell quiet.
When the people outside heard no sound from within, they began to grow anxious.
“Madam!” Li Tianyou called urgently toward the room.
“Cuiguo, go tell Master, and then tidy up for the eldest young lady. Both mother and children are safe.” Lady Yao spoke impatiently.
At that moment, her eyes and heart were filled with her newborn grandchildren.
“Master, the eldest young lady has given birth to two young masters and a little princess. She’s still being cleaned up, and the babies will be brought out shortly.” Cuiguo called through the door.
When Li Tianyou heard this, he finally relaxed. He now had not only grandsons, but a granddaughter as well.
Xu Heming also let out a breath of relief and sat down in a chair nearby.
Seeing him sitting there with a dark expression, everyone outside fell silent.
Xu Heming said nothing, but his hand tapped against the arm of the chair again and again.
“Prince An, do whatever you wish with me—kill me or punish me as you please. But my family had nothing to do with this. If you have any grievances, take them out on me alone.” Li Tianyou bowed before Xu Heming and spoke slowly.
“Father!” Li Tingzhou tried to stop him, but Li Tianyou shook his head.
Someone had to bear the consequences of this matter.
Wen Xiu was pregnant now, and Li Tingzhou hesitated.
“What is Father-in-law talking about?” Xu Heming’s icy voice rang out, making Li Tianyou’s heart jolt.
It seemed that this time, Xu Heming truly had no intention of letting the Li family off.
“Godmother.” When Zhiya saw Lady Yao open the door, she called out joyfully.
“Jun—” Lady Yao had just begun to ask Divine Physician Jun to examine her newborn granddaughter when she saw Xu Heming standing directly in front of her.
“Prince An has arrived.” Although Cuiguo had just told her that Xu Heming was here, Lady Yao still felt extremely uneasy when she actually came face-to-face with him.
“Is this the eldest?” Xu Heming looked at the tiny bundle in Lady Yao’s arms, his brows drawing tightly together.
He had only one thought: How could she be so small?
“This is the third one, Niannian,” Lady Yao explained. She knew they could not keep the children hidden forever.
They might as well reveal the child now. Perhaps, seeing the baby, Prince An would decide not to hold it against them for concealing Li Zhiwei’s whereabouts.
“Niannian.” Xu Heming wanted to pick up the child, but he had no idea where to begin.
“Prince An, why don’t you hold her?” Seeing the tenderness in his expression as he looked at the baby, Lady Yao asked tentatively.
Before Xu Heming could answer, Lady Yao placed the child directly into his arms.
Xu Heming stiffened instantly.
This was the first time he had ever held such a tiny baby. He remembered that when he had first met Xu Qing, the child had not seemed this small.
Before long, Lady Yao came out with Cuiguo, each of them carrying one of the other two babies. These two were clearly a full size larger than the child in Xu Heming’s arms.
It seemed the other two had taken all the nourishment.
“Mother-in-law, is this one a girl?” Xu Heming asked after a moment’s thought.
“Yes, this is the eldest, Pingping.” Lady Yao brought the first child over to Xu Heming as she spoke.
Afterward, she placed the baby in the arms of the still-dazed Li Tianyou and told him, “Hold her.”
Li Tianyou had been wondering how Xu Heming intended to deal with him. Now, a tiny infant had suddenly been placed in his arms.
“This is the second child, An’an. He’s the one with the loudest cry.” Lady Yao then took the second baby from Cuiguo’s arms.
“Which one is my disciple?” Kong Meng’er finally reacted. She looked at the eldest, then at the second, unable to decide.
At last, she tried to look at the third baby in Xu Heming’s arms, but Xu Heming turned away, blocking her view.
“Why are you being so stingy?” Kong Meng’er complained.
“If you want one, have a child yourself!” Xu Heming replied without even looking up.
“How is Zhiwei?” Feeling the tiny presence in his arms, Xu Heming finally asked about Li Zhiwei.
“She’s asleep.” After saying this, Lady Yao looked at Xu Heming somewhat uneasily.
“Prince An, don’t blame Zhiwei. She simply didn’t want to lose her children.” Lady Yao sighed and ultimately pleaded with him on her daughter’s behalf.
“Prince An, why don’t I examine the little prince and princess?” Seeing that the atmosphere had become somewhat tense, Imperial Physician Zhou tried to find an excuse to withdraw.
“Cuiguo, take Imperial Physician Zhou and the children to the room next door.” Lady Yao quickly handed the babies to the wet nurses who had been waiting nearby.
“Yes!” Cuiguo and Zhiya hurriedly led them to the warm room.
“I’ll go take a look as well,” Doctor Zhang said at once when he heard this.
Xu Heming nodded without saying anything.
“Husband, why don’t we go see the babies too?” Afraid that remaining there would make her too nervous and affect the child in her belly, Wen Xiu spoke softly.
“Go on, all of you. Go see the babies.” Li Tianyou waved them away.
