“Is Prince An trying to put me in an impossible position?”
Li Tianyou pointed angrily at Xu Heming, who was kneeling before him, and stumbled backward in fright.
This was Prince An, for heaven’s sake. Who besides the Emperor and the Dowager Princess would dare make him kneel?
Even the Empress wouldn’t dare order Xu Heming to kneel.
Yet now, Xu Heming was kneeling right in front of him. Terrified, Li Tianyou retreated several steps.
He thought to himself that he would have to find a way to leave the capital as soon as possible.
“Father-in-law, I have no intention of divorcing Weiwei. I beg you, please let me see her.”
Xu Heming showed no embarrassment. Instead, he spoke with unwavering determination.
At the same time, he cursed himself inwardly. He shouldn’t have mentioned having Li Zhiwei terminate the pregnancy. If he hadn’t, Li Zhiwei wouldn’t have lost her temper and demanded a divorce.
“Get up!” Li Tianyou’s anxious heart hardened somewhat at the mention of his daughter.
“It isn’t that I won’t let you see her. Weiwei isn’t in the capital.” Li Tianyou looked at Xu Heming and finally spoke in a cold voice.
“What?”
Xu Heming raised his head in disbelief and stared at Li Tianyou, as if trying to determine whether he was lying.
Otherwise, how could Li Zhiwei possibly be gone after he had only been away for a few days?
“I don’t believe you. Father-in-law, you’re lying to me, aren’t you? Weiwei must still be at the Li residence, right?” Even the mighty and imposing Prince An was completely at a loss now.
He couldn’t understand how Li Zhiwei could be so heartless as to leave him behind.
“Father-in-law, tell me—where did Weiwei go?” Xu Heming stared at Li Tianyou.
“I won’t tell you. Leave. This is the divorce agreement Weiwei left for you. You should sign it as soon as possible.” Li Tianyou handed the document to Xu Heming once more.
“I will never agree to a divorce.”
Xu Heming rose to his feet and prepared to leave.
Seeing him stand, Li Tianyou secretly sighed in relief. He had been afraid that Xu Heming would refuse to leave.
If that happened, how was he supposed to sneak away and look for Weiwei?
Xu Heming, however, turned and headed toward Banyue Pavilion.
He didn’t believe that Li Zhiwei had really left.
After all, Li Zhiwei was still very weak. How could she have left so easily?
Yet Banyue Pavilion was completely empty.
Even Cuiyue and Cuihua were nowhere to be seen.
“Xu Chuan!” Xu Heming called out with difficulty.
“My lord.” Xu Chuan emerged uneasily.
He wondered how he should respond when his lord punished him.
After all, the Princess had left the capital, yet none of them had known anything about it.
“Where are the people the Li family assigned?” Xu Heming glared viciously at Xu Chuan. They hadn’t even noticed Li Zhiwei leaving.
This was not merely a sign of their incompetence—it was dereliction of duty.
“Please punish me, my lord!” Xu Chuan didn’t dare say anything else.
“Go back and receive your punishment!”
Xu Heming closed his eyes.
Weiwei had actually left him!
Still, when he thought of Cuihua and Cuiyue being with Li Zhiwei, he felt that he could somehow still find them.
“My lord!”
Cuihua and Cuiyue came in from outside in a panic.
“Why have you come back? Where is the Princess?”
The relief Xu Heming had felt only moments earlier vanished instantly, and it seemed as though the sky itself had collapsed.
All he had done was say that he wanted her to terminate the pregnancy. Why had Li Zhiwei been so heartless as to deny him even the chance to explain?
Niutian Village, near the capital
“Sister, are you really not going back to the capital?” Zhiya glanced hesitantly at Li Zhiwei.
Zhiya still felt that it was inappropriate for Li Zhiwei to leave the capital now.
After all, Li Zhiwei was carrying twins.
If anything happened to her, Zhiya didn’t dare imagine the consequences.
“Why should I go back? So I can wait for someone to give me a bowl of abortifacient and kill the babies in my belly?” The moment Li Zhiwei thought of that wretched man Xu Heming wanting to terminate her pregnancy, she became furious.
“But you came here alone. I’m worried that…” Zhiya didn’t dare gamble with Li Zhiwei’s health.
Besides, she couldn’t help wondering whether there might be some misunderstanding.
After all, Xu Heming clearly cared deeply about Li Zhiwei. How could he truly be willing to give up the children?
“What is there to worry about? Besides, Master and Mistress are here too.” Li Zhiwei spoke indifferently.
“But your safety—”
When Zhiya remembered that Li Zhiwei hadn’t brought Cuihua and Cuiyue with her, she became even more uneasy.
“Xiaoya, are you saying you don’t trust me?” Kong Meng’er looked at Zhiya with obvious displeasure.
“Miss Kong, please. My sister is pregnant.” Zhiya got a headache whenever she saw Kong Meng’er.
The fact that they had managed to leave the capital so smoothly was also largely thanks to Kong Meng’er.
Li Zhiwei had been just as surprised to see Kong Meng’er. After all, Qing Mu had sent Kong Meng’er back to Deyang Manor before this.
Kong Meng’er had not only helped them leave the capital, but had also left Cuihua and Cuiyue behind in the city.
“Hmph. Who told certain annoying people to send me back to Deyang Manor in the first place? I’m just proving that revenge is a dish best served ten years later.” After saying this, Kong Meng’er cast an ill-intentioned glance at Li Zhiwei’s belly.
“Big Sis, you promised me that once the baby in your belly is born, you’d let me take it as my disciple.” Kong Meng’er’s face was full of anticipation.
“Miss, the baby in my sister’s belly won’t arrive until next year at the earliest. A newborn will still be a helpless little baby, and you already want to teach it martial arts? What if they turn out to be two delicate little girls? How are they supposed to learn?”
Zhiya felt a headache coming on.
“Then keep having children until you get a boy.”
Kong Meng’er imagined two soft, adorable little girls and realized she probably wouldn’t have the heart to make them learn those rough-and-tumble martial arts techniques either.
“You’ve forgotten—you spirited my sister away. Where are you going to find someone to have a disciple for you?” Zhiya spread her hands, her face filled with helplessness.
“What’s there to worry about? At worst, I’ll knock Prince An unconscious and deliver him to you. Once you’re pregnant, I’ll send him back.” Kong Meng’er waved her hand grandly, as though it were nothing.
“Little Sister Meng’er, that won’t do. Prince An and I are already divorced.” Even Li Zhiwei found Kong Meng’er utterly exasperating. Hadn’t she previously been clamoring to marry Xu Heming?
She could simply marry Xu Heming herself and have his child.
“Don’t look at me like that. My brother told me that having children hurts women’s bodies—and it hurts terribly, too. I’m not having any. Besides, his father owes the debt, so let his son pay it.”
Kong Meng’er had her own reasoning.
All she wanted was a son of Xu Heming’s to take as her disciple.
“Miss Kong, Prince An already has a son. He’s at just the right age to start learning martial arts. Why don’t you consider him?” Zhiya wondered: if Kong Meng’er’s fixation was on Xu Heming, why wouldn’t Xu Qingshi do?
“He’s too old. He’d be harder to trick.” Kong Meng’er blinked her eyes and, in the end, came up with a rather flimsy excuse.
