Madam Jin was momentarily stunned when a little boy called her “sister.”
“Oh my, where did this adorable little boy come from? Sweetheart, you should call me Grandmother,” Madam Jin said, in an excellent mood.
“You brat, don’t you dare slander me!” Jun Mowen snarled through the pain, baring his teeth as he glared at Xu Qingshi. Even now, he hadn’t forgotten to curse the little scoundrel for setting him up.
“What are you shouting for? Children don’t lie. You know perfectly well what you did to Wewei, don’t you?” Madam Jin no longer believed a word Jun Mowen said.
She gave his ear another hard twist.
“Ow, madam, please let me go! I truly didn’t do anything. I only took Wewei’s pulse—I hadn’t even said anything yet!”
Jun Mowen felt he was even more wronged than Dou E. And as for this little brat, he really was just like his father—black-hearted to the core.
“Master’s wife, Master really didn’t do anything to me.” Seeing how furious Madam Jin was, Li Zhiwei hurriedly tried to explain.
“Wewei, don’t believe a word that old man says. If it hadn’t been for him back then, you wouldn’t have fallen into a coma, and you might even have lost the child in your belly,” Madam Jin said, her heart filling with lingering fear at the thought.
“Madam, let go! Let go! I truly hadn’t had time to say anything before you came in.” Jun Mowen knew that once Madam Jin made up her mind, she could be extremely stubborn. Still, he genuinely felt wronged today.
“What else were you going to say? I’d like to hear whether you can come up with some sort of miracle.” Madam Jin angrily released his ear and planted her hands on her hips, glaring at him accusingly.
Clearly, she didn’t believe him in the slightest.
“Wewei isn’t carrying just one child. She’s carrying twins.” Jun Mowen spoke while deliberately moving farther away from Madam Jin. He had no desire to have the old woman yank his ear again.
His tone was smug, as though he were trying to prove how superb his medical skills were. After all, no one else had noticed this. He had been the first to discover it.
Everyone in the room froze.
Twins?
Madam Jin, who had been fuming moments before, was stunned as well. She asked uncertainly, “Really?”
“Of course it’s true. I felt the pulse long ago, but the pregnancy was still in its early stages then, so I couldn’t be certain. I examined Wewei again today, and her pulse is strong. There’s no doubt she’s carrying twins.” Jun Mowen’s face was full of pride.
“What are twins?” Xu Qingshi asked, frowning as he turned to Cuiguo.
“It means there are two babies in your mother’s belly. By the time they’re born, Young Prince, you’ll have either two younger brothers, two younger sisters, or one of each,” Cuiguo explained excitedly.
“But Mother’s belly is so small. Won’t the little brothers and sisters feel cramped?” Xu Qingshi remembered everyone saying earlier that Li Zhiwei’s belly was so small it could only hold one baby, and he began to worry.
He did want two younger siblings, but would his mother be uncomfortable?
“Oh my, Cuiguo, hurry and have your mistress send for an Imperial Physician to examine Wewei. If she really is carrying twins, this pregnancy will need to be handled with great care,” Madam Jin said quickly once she recovered from her shock.
Hearing this, Jun Mowen’s beard practically bristled with indignation. The old woman clearly didn’t trust him and would rather believe an outsider!
“What twins?” The Old Princess asked in confusion as she entered with Lady Yao, carrying a bowl of lean pork porridge.
“Grandmother, this Quack physician says Mother is carrying twins.” Xu Qingshi pointed at Jun Mowen.
He didn’t really understand what “Quack physician” meant. He had only heard Madam Jin call Jun Mowen that and repeated it himself.
The Old Princess looked at Jun Mowen in astonishment.
“Miracle Physician, is Wewei truly carrying twins?” Lady Yao asked excitedly.
“Madam Li, the child in Wewei’s belly is indeed two babies. If you’re still worried, you can have an Imperial Physician examine her as well.” Jun Mowen knew he had a history. Though he was unwilling to admit it, he still suggested that they have an Imperial Physician take a look.
After all, he had been helpless when Li Zhiwei had fallen into a coma before, and in the end, it had been a little girl who brought her around.
Besides, carrying twins was a joyous occasion. The Imperial Physicians were at least somewhat skilled in medicine, and perhaps they understood better than he did how to care for such a pregnancy.
“Bada, take my token and go summon Imperial Physician Zhou,” the Old Princess instructed Nanny Tang.
At the thought that she might have two more grandsons or granddaughters next year, the Old Princess was filled with excitement.
With Lady Yao and the Old Princess present, Madam Jin didn’t dare do anything else to Jun Mowen. She merely shot him a warning look, afraid he might say something inappropriate and offend the Li family’s matriarch. She had heard that this woman was the Old Princess herself.
The noble ladies of the capital were not people ordinary commoners like them could afford to offend.
At that moment, Xu Heming was seated with Zhang Yanchu and Zhu Jingchen, discussing how to deal with the envoys from Qinling.
“Minister Xu, have you prepared the weapons and chosen the fighters for the occasion?” Zhu Jingchen asked Xu Heming.
“Your Majesty, everything has been arranged. However, the matter of choosing the fighters will still require General Zhang’s assistance.” Xu Heming turned to Zhang Yanchu.
“The person Qinling is sending is Zhao Jiugao, Qinling’s First Warrior. I have fought him before, so I wish to take part in the contest personally this time,” Zhang Yanchu said straightforwardly.
“Are you confident?” Xu Heming asked.
Instead of answering, Zhang Yanchu countered, “Are you confident in those weapons?”
“Why don’t you try them?” Xu Heming said, taking out a spear and tossing it in front of Zhang Yanchu.
“Then please enlighten me, Prince An!” Zhang Yanchu picked up the spear and addressed Xu Heming without the slightest hesitation.
The two men began exchanging blows right there in the imperial study, one attack following another.
“Oh my, gentlemen, couldn’t you move somewhere else?” Eunuch Liu cried out nervously, watching with his heart in his throat.
The two men nodded and headed outside.
Zhu Jingchen, however, shot Eunuch Liu an annoyed look, as though scolding him for meddling.
He was curious to see how powerful the new weapons were as well.
Xu Heming and Zhang Yanchu were evenly matched.
Before long, the sword Xu Heming had just drawn from a guard’s waist shattered into two pieces.
“Excellent!” Zhu Jingchen exclaimed, his spirits soaring.
It seemed the new weapons really were far superior to their original ones.
With Zhang Yanchu’s martial prowess combined with the new weapons, there was no way the people of Qinling could defeat them.
“Your Majesty, Qinling will certainly make a demand when the time comes. Have you decided what we should wager?” Xu Heming asked. He wasn’t upset at having lost and instead turned to Zhu Jingchen.
“What does Minister Xu think I should ask for?” Zhu Jingchen asked, wondering whether it would be acceptable to demand that, if Qinling lost, Prince An marry the Princess of Qinling.
