Chapter 39: Chapter 39: With Me Here, I Will Never Let You Die

Other than attending meetings at the Main Service Area, this was Liang He’s first time visiting any of the other service areas.

Following Doctor Xu’s instructions, she carried the two little wolf pups and boarded the aircraft with him. Before leaving, she made sure to tell Cedriel—who had tried to tag along—to stay behind and watch the house with the Mengji Snow Leopard. However, since the Canglan Hunting Eagle naturally possessed the ability to fly, he stubbornly followed Liang He’s aircraft anyway. Seeing this, the Mojin King Tiger and the Mengji Snow Leopard didn’t insist on coming along. For once, they weren’t competing for her favor.

"Doctor Xu, what exactly is going on? Why the rush?" Liang He asked. He had even insisted she bring Little Nian Gao and Little Sesame along.

"We found the wolf pups’ mother," Xu Yi explained, his expression grim.

The Second Service Area was primarily forested and situated near the edge of the reserve, acting as a natural barrier. During their patrol tonight, the team had discovered the pups’ mother—a Grassland Silver Moon Wolf.

"We were always curious why one of the pups was black and the other white. After some investigation, we discovered that this Silver Moon Wolf had mated with the Wolf King of the Dark Night Wolves, who originally lived in the Second Service Area."

The Silver Moon Wolf’s fur was predominantly white, while the Dark Night Wolf was pitch-black. This perfectly matched the physical traits of Little Nian Gao and Little Sesame.

"If that’s the case, the Silver Moon Wolf should be handled by the Seventh Service Area or the Eighth Service Area. Why wasn’t she sent directly there?" Both Liang He’s Seventh Service Area and the Eighth Service Area she mentioned consisted of grassland and jungle terrains, which were the natural habitats of the Silver Moon Wolf.

"She is severely injured!" Xu Yi, usually so easygoing, now bore a dark expression. His fists were clenched tight, seething with apparent anger. "She doesn’t trust anyone right now. Moreover, from what I’ve observed, her injuries were likely inflicted by humans."

Because they couldn’t get close to the severely injured Silver Moon Wolf, and because she wasn’t an SSS-level Beastman like Kuang Ye, Xu Yi didn’t even dare use anesthetics. He was terrified that one wrong move would cause the wolf to die on the spot. Logically speaking, the staff in the reserve tried not to interfere with the natural life and death of ordinary animals. But this Silver Moon Wolf was different—she had been harmed by humans!

"So, you’re hoping that Little Nian Gao and Little Sesame will awaken her maternal instincts, making her trust you again so she’ll cooperate with the treatment?" Since it was the pups’ mother, Liang He naturally wouldn’t sit idly by. However, she felt that Doctor Xu’s plan might be a bit too idealistic. "I’m afraid that might be a bit difficult. The little wolf pups have lived with us for a long time now. They’re covered not only in the scent of humans but also the smell of other fierce beasts. It’s highly likely that the heavily injured Silver Moon Wolf won’t recognize her own children and might even attack them."

"I’m just grasping at straws here. We’re completely out of options." Xu Yi was well aware of Liang He’s concerns. What he didn’t say out loud was that he actually placed more of his hope on Liang He herself. With her there, perhaps a miracle would happen.

Carrying the little wolf pups, the two of them rode the aircraft and arrived at the Second Service Area as fast as possible.

The moment they stepped off the aircraft, they were met with the sight of the Silver Moon Wolf. Surrounded by staff members, she lay dying on the ground, yet she was still putting up a desperate fight.

"She has no ability to resist anymore. Why not just capture her directly?" Liang He asked. The exhausted Silver Moon Wolf was at the end of her rope. If the staff wore proper protective gear, they could easily restrain her.

"Silver Moon Wolves are incredibly proud and would rather die than submit," Xu Yi explained. "If we forcefully take her away, even if she doesn’t die on the way, she’ll refuse to cooperate with treatment later and will just starve herself to death."

The Wolf Clan seemed inherently proud; they were the free kings of the grasslands. To them, a life without freedom was a life not worth living.

"Liang He, it’s all up to you now." Xu Yi signaled the others to step back, trying to let the Silver Moon Wolf lower her guard so Liang He would have a chance to approach.

"AWOO..." Seeing the crowd disperse, the Silver Moon Wolf relaxed slightly. But the moment she saw Liang He approaching, she immediately let out a warning growl. Blood-soaked and bearing her fangs, the wolf’s bone-deep wounds were clearly visible to Liang He, even from over five meters away.

"Don’t be afraid. I just brought your children to see you." Liang He’s gentle voice was carried by the cold night wind to the Silver Moon Wolf’s ears, somehow causing her tense demeanor to soften slightly.

The moment Liang He gently set down the little wolf pups she had been holding in her arms, the Silver Moon Wolf immediately recognized her children.

"AWOO..."

The familiar call made the little wolf pups freeze in place. They looked around in confusion until they spotted the Silver Moon Wolf not too far away.

"AWOO?"

"AWOO!"

Little Nian Gao and Little Sesame sprinted toward the Silver Moon Wolf. Liang He had raised them well; they ate, drank, ran, and jumped with vigor, and were now two adorably chubby little wolf pups.

"AWOO..." Seeing the children she had constantly worried about alive and well, the Silver Moon Wolf’s eyes grew wet, her gaze filled with maternal love and reluctance to part. She knew she didn’t have much time left.

"AWOO..." The Silver Moon Wolf looked at the human who had approached her at some point. Seeing her pups happily circling the human’s feet, she knew this person could be trusted.

"Do you want me to keep taking care of your children for you?" Liang He crouched down, doing her best to give the Silver Moon Wolf a sense of equality and safety. She interacted naturally with the two pups, gently placing them right by the mother wolf’s side.

Exerting all her remaining strength, the Silver Moon Wolf licked her pups. Her gaze was soft. In the dark night, the brilliance of her maternal love illuminated the future path of the little wolf pups.

"AWOO..." After licking her pups’ fur all over, the Silver Moon Wolf’s eyes brimmed with reluctance. Mustering her very last ounce of strength, she nudged them back toward Liang He. Then, with a heavy THUD, she collapsed into the dirt.

"AWOO!" The confused little wolf pups tried to return to their mother’s embrace but were met with a fierce growl. Terrified, they froze in place, not daring to move.

"Damn it, my eyes are sweating."

"If I catch whoever hurt this Silver Moon Wolf, I swear I’ll make them pay in blood!"

"The Silver Moon Wolf isn’t actually going to die, is she? We can definitely save her, right?"

Witnessing this heartbreaking scene of a dying mother entrusting her orphans to another, countless people were moved to tears. With tear-filled eyes, they fervently hoped Liang He could save her and give her a second chance at life.

And Liang He did not disappoint them.

"You’re going to be okay, don’t be afraid." Ignoring the muddy ground, Liang He knelt and gently gathered the Silver Moon Wolf into her arms. Unnoticed by anyone, she slipped a pill into the wolf’s mouth.

She could tell that, just like the Mengji Snow Leopard back then, the Silver Moon Wolf was suffering not only from bone-deep external wounds but also from severe internal injuries. However, her constitution was far weaker than that of the Mengji Snow Leopard, and her injuries were much more critical. It was safe to say she was hanging on by a mere thread. Doctor Xu’s medical skills alone would never be enough to save her.

"As long as I’m here, I will never let you die," she promised. Liang He gently stroked the Silver Moon Wolf’s head. Seeing the wolf slowly close her eyes, Liang He’s downcast gaze suddenly erupted with a light as piercing and cold as ice.

She was struggling to suppress the ’demon’ buried deep within her heart.

"Liang He? Liang He! Are you okay?" Seeing that the Silver Moon Wolf had stopped moving, Xu Yi wanted to step forward and check on her. But realizing Liang He had also gone completely silent, he grew worried.

Then, for the first time in his life, he heard a soul-shaking voice that sounded like it came straight from hell.

"Doctor Xu, who hurt her?"
