Chapter 1649 Alarms
Chapter 1649 Alarms
Karl had every intention of asking the regressed dragons about the tutoring after dinner.
He really did.
But what happened between getting the meal and Button forgetting that you had to chew foods for reasons other than combining flavours was not conducive to actually asking much of anything.
The first alarms went off just after Button was breathing properly again, and everyone went into panic mode.
The eggs were hatching.
However, nobody had thought to make the tones for the alarms different, so for the first few seconds, everyone was in a panic, and none of them knew which zone’s alarm had been triggered.
The answer was yes.
All of them.
There were eggs hatching in every cluster around the Tiny World, according to Karl’s oversight of the space, and the only ones that weren’t showing signs of hatching yet were Tessa’s, which were much younger than the rest.
“Everyone to their stations. This is not a drill.
There are eggs hatching in every nest, and if you want to bond with them, or are in charge of helping them hatch safely, you are needed now.” Karl informed them.
“Crap, all of them? Alright, it’s go time. To the forest!” Lotus shouted.
“You might want to put Brother Chin down before you run off.”
“No.”
Then, the cleric was off and running, with a small white form laughing in her
arms.
Chin didn’t mind, he was a white dragon, and they were going to a dragon hatching, where if anyone was coming out a bit too weak, or crippled from birth, he could help mend them and get them back on the right path.
Healing was the specialty of his species and their patron God.
Keeping young dragons healthy and happy was as much their priority as it was the Red Dragons, but in a different way. Instead of focusing on raising them, they focused on helping them recover from errors.
Because young dragons made a lot of them.
He hadn’t quite realized how true that was until he got here a day ago, and saw what raising dragons outside of the rigid structure and rules of the temple looked like. When you let young dragons simply roam during every hour that they were not in school, they got into all sorts of trouble, but it was always trouble related to the nature of their species.
For example, Button never got lost in the woods. That was nearly impossible for a Forest Dragon.
However, they were just feral enough that she would often be seen running around naked as a result of forgetting to put her dress back on after transformations. For the Tiny World, as they called this place, it wasn’t really an
issue.
Most of the others preferred it as well.
But if she was going to go out and interact with others in the outside world, eventually she was going to need to have a long discussion with someone about the importance of situation appropriate clothing.
In fact, if they were going to keep letting her help with dinner, that was also true.
Because hot oil and nudity don’t mix.
Dana turned to Karl. “Is there a particular spot that you want to be at? There are dragon eggs all over the Tiny World, but I’m sure that one of them is more interesting than the others.”
Karl shrugged. “There are people for every group, so there are two basic options. Either head for the mountain where the largest group of dragon eggs are, or transform and fly over them all, so that I get the best view.”
Dana frowned. “Why didn’t I think of that? Flying high will definitely let us see the most, and with this eyesight, I don’t actually need to be close to see what is going on.”
“Then flying it is. Hop on and you can watch while I circle.”
Karl transformed into the massive form of the World Dragon for Dana to ride. With smooth golden scales down the back, the World Dragon was relatively comfortable, but there was not much to hold on to.
So, the grip was down to [Eternal Lightning] and a bit of leg pressure on the sides of his neck, in front of his wings. But even that was tenuous given his size.
With Dana settled, Karl launched himself into the air and began making a lazy lap around the centre of the Tiny World.
None of the clutches were near the edge of the space, in the new areas he had added after reaching Immortality, so it didn’t have to be a long flight, just a big enough loop to get an angle to see all of the clutches under the foliage.
The ones in the forest and swamp you almost had to be overhead to see
properly.
But the ones on the open plains, in the lake, or on the mountainside were much easier to spot. The residents had thought of that when they placed them, in case there was any sort of threat to them.
Nothing in the space would eat a dragon egg, but the nature of a caretaker was to be cautious about the conditions that the eggs were staying in, and a change in water level or temperature might slow their growth.
Keeping Dragon eggs in the perfect condition until hatching was a never ending battle, and they needed a slightly different environment at different times during their development. So, while Karl kept tabs on their growth, he wasn’t one hundred percent certain where all of the clutches were today. Even a change in the ambient mana caused by the eggs growth might have caused the caretakers to move them to a new spot.
“Oh, it seems that the Swamp Dragons have an especially enthusiastic protector.” Dana laughed as they flew over.
Remi had strung up hastily made celebratory banners through the trees, and there were colourful balls floating on the waters’ surface, an ideal first activity for the young Swamp Dragons.
Not the most productive or educational of toys, according to the church, but it would help teach the hatchlings how to operate their limbs properly for the
first time.
