The Devil CEO's Contract Wife

Chapter 298: Adrian King [1]

Chapter 298: Adrian King [1]

CATHERINE

“Go to Adrian…”

At Ares’ abrupt words, I bring my gaze to him. The last thing I want to do is leave him alone with this old witch, but I knew he could handle it. He had her exactly where he wanted to deliver the final blow, but the one thing I didn’t see coming was Adrian.

I should have thought about it.

It was quite obvious what she wanted. Using Adrian as her puppet now, after losing all the connections to the underworld.

I spared a glare, making sure I drilled into her soul before walking out of the conference room. Scott followed as I snappily searched for Adrian.

I asked the others in the bullpen, and they told me he ran towards the elevator. I used it and got to the first floor, out in a hurry, where I caught him running.

“Adrian!”

He halted, his face wet with tears. Shaking his head, he moved.

“Wait!”

He went past the revolving doors straight to the car.

Shit

. I can’t let him be alone right now.

When we exited the building, Adrian was already getting into the car.

“Adrian, wait!”

“Go away!” He slammed the door.

Before Scott could tell the driver not to move, it was already too late; the car was already speeding out.

“What the heck?” I frowned.

“Mrs. King?”

“Get the car.”

It didn’t take long, and it was Nico who brought it.

“Who are we going after?”

I rolled my eyes and got in, and Scott followed suit.

“Just drive…”

He moved out, maintaining a steady pace until I could see Adrian’s car.

“Is Adrian telling the driver to speed or something?” I voiced my disapproval.

“Seems like it…” Nico replied. “You shouldn’t worry yourself too much, Milady. I’m sure he probably asked the driver to take him home.”

“I’m worried…” I said. “Don’t chase, I don’t want him to panic or—OH GOD!”

A bus collided with Adrian’s car, causing another vehicle to pivot towards ours.

Nico waved the car towards the side to avoid the hit, but we ended up clashing with another.

Everything went blank momentarily, my head feeling like it would split in two. I held the spot, opening my eyes to see bloodstain on my hand. Nowhere else hurt aside from my head, it must have been a cut or something.

I groaned, closing my eyes to somehow dull the pain, but a voice was calling me, pulling me out of it. The pain was replaced by the voice, and I focused on that only, finally having a grip of my senses.

“Mrs. King!”

I saw Nico and Scott, looking right at me, awaiting a response; they had cuts on their faces, and the windshield had been shattered into bits. Multiple horns blaring with urgency.

They got out of the car at speed and forced the backseat door open to pull me out. I held Scott tightly as everything spun for a while, until I gained my footing.

“Are you alright?”

I nodded. “Adrian.”

I looked, and horror filled my lungs. Other vehicles had been hit during the crash, but Adrian’s car took the entire blow, and the front was completely squished.

“Adrian!” I peeled myself from Scott and ran towards the car.

My hand pressed against the squeezed metal. Adrian was unconscious, his face smeared with blood.

“Adrian!” I pulled on the door but it wouldn’t budge.

“NICO!” I screamed for him.

Nico tossed his phone aside, barking something to Scott. I gave way as he tried to force the door open before Scoff ran back with a lug wrench.

I covered my mouth as Nico continuously tried to pry the door open. When he succeeded, tears were already streaming down my face as Adrian was pulled out.

I dropped to my knees as he was placed against me.

“H-He’s still breathing! We need to get him to a hospital now!”

“Catherine!”

I turned my head to Ares, and I broke right there. He ran to me.

“W-We need to get him to a hospital, he needs…” I sobbed. “He needs…”

Ares cupped my face tenderly. “Calm down, baby.”

“Adrian…” I uttered.

Ares took off his coat and wrapped it around Adrian.

He lifted him, and I followed closely, holding onto his arm as we rushed toward the sound of the ambulance.

~☆~

Adrian was against the stretcher, a round of nurses and doctors around him as they rushed him down the corridor, naming a lot of things I couldn’t follow up.

Whatever it was, it seemed like he needed immediate surgery.

We were stopped midday, the doors closing. I flinched when I felt Ares’ hand at the small of my back. He led me to sit, and I ran my hand through my hair. I was still covered in blood, but I wasn’t conscious about it.

The sharp sound of ripping filled the air as Ares tore from his shirt and balled it to use it on my small cut.

“We should have this looked at.”

I gulped. “Will he be okay? I tried to stop him from getting into the car, but he wouldn’t listen.”

He brushed the tears away with his thumb.

“He will…”

I forced a smile. “Isn’t that for the doctors to decide?”

“They decide it, but Adrian is a strong kid.”

I tilted my head. “I thought you…” I paused. “Didn’t pay attention.”

“Adrian was always wrapped around Agatha’s fingers. Despite his existence, he’s still my brother by blood, and Athena’s. We kept a close eye on him.”

My heart melted at his words. Ares wasn’t that indifferent towards Adrian after all.

“I thought I lost you again.”

I blinked back at him. “Wh-What?”

There was a softness in his eyes. “I saw your phone, then the car…”

“I didn’t mean to scare you like that, and I’m fine—”

“I love you.”

I froze. I knew Ares’ feelings for me were deeper than anything else, but he has never said those words to me, at least not directly.
