Chapter 779: Chapter 779: Master of the Finishing Blow (Part 1)
Silas Sullivan chuckled as he watched them interact. At his age, one’s perspective on things was bound to be a little different from that of the younger generation. It was clear these three young people got along well.
He looked at Vera Xavier and asked, "Xavier, have you really never used a weapon before?"
Vera Xavier shook her head. "I really haven’t. It’s just that when I touch a weapon, I get this inexplicable feeling. I guess that’s probably why I was able to get such a good score."
Silas Sullivan sighed internally and said in a subdued voice, "When I was young, I had a friend who was just like you. The moment he touched a weapon, it was like he became a completely different person. Back when he was a sniper, we always felt safest with him on the job. What a pity..."
That friend had once saved his life. The year he was killed, it had also been in an attempt to save him; his position was compromised, and he was surrounded and eliminated. Silas rarely brought up these old memories, but because Vera Xavier had said something so similar to what his friend used to say, he found himself mentioning it in front of them.
As he spoke, even Sheldon Caldwell, who was usually the first to crack a joke, didn’t dare to interrupt.
Silas Sullivan turned his head again and looked at Vera Xavier seriously. "Are you really not considering joining us to serve the people?"
Vera Xavier thought for a moment before replying seriously, "I do want to serve the people, but I don’t plan on joining your ranks. I think I can be a bit of a coward at times, and I’m afraid I can’t handle that kind of hardship. So, I plan to serve the people in a different way."
Silas Sullivan almost laughed when he heard her. This was the same girl who had calmly fought back when she was slandered, and who had remained poised and composed under everyone’s gaze. A person like her, you could tell at a glance, had a resolute will.
And people with resolute wills were never cowards, much less afraid of hardship. He knew her words were just a pretext, a polite refusal.
Still, he asked, "If not with us, then what do you plan to do?"
Vera Xavier said earnestly, "Study medicine. Specifically, Traditional Chinese Medicine. I want to promote the thousands of years of TCM culture, treat the sick and injured, and while I’m at it, sell our herbal medicines all over the world and tackle today’s most challenging diseases."
Nathaniel Nathan had already learned of her ambitions back when he was with her in Yulara buying medicinal herbs, so he wasn’t surprised to hear her words now.
Sheldon Caldwell, on the other hand, was rather surprised. He had some understanding of Vera Xavier’s personality. He knew she was smart and refused to be taken advantage of. He also knew she was stubborn and headstrong, with a temper that wasn’t exactly mild—at least, not like the virtually placid TCM doctors he imagined.
He couldn’t help but blurt out, "You? A doctor? Are you kidding me?"
Like Brooke Mitchell, he felt that if you wanted to study medicine, you should go to a dedicated medical university. Veridia University was excellent, but it wasn’t a specialized medical school. As the saying goes, every field requires specialized study, and her chosen path seemed a bit misguided.
Vera Xavier wasn’t surprised by his comment. She just gave a faint smile. "I’m not kidding. I’m serious. You might not think I’m cut out for medicine right now, but I believe time will tell. Besides, before this training started, did you think I had any talent for shooting?"
Sheldon Caldwell fell silent. Before this, his impression of her was simply that she was Nathaniel Nathan’s girlfriend. He knew she was capable and had a bit of a temper, but he still saw her as a delicate little thing.
But after this training, her performance had forced him to see her in a completely new light.
