After Vera hung up, she saw a long line had formed behind her. Only then did she remember that in this day and age, you still had to wait in line to use the phone at school. She had made several calls, and a lot of time had passed.

Some students behind her had grown impatient and were starting to complain.

Vera felt she had made people wait too long, so she sheepishly apologized to the student behind her before dashing off to pay the bill. She had to admit, phone calls were a bit pricey in this era. Fortunately, she wasn’t a truly broke student.

Just as she was about to head back to her dorm, she heard someone call out to her, "Vera Xavier!"

She turned and saw Shane Caldwell. If not for seeing him right then, she would have almost forgotten that he had also been accepted into Veridia University.

Vera smiled faintly. "Which department are you in, Class President?"

"Chinese Language and Literature," Shane Caldwell answered. In truth, he had only chosen that major after seeing Vera write it down on her application. He had originally wanted to study something else entirely.

Vera smiled. "Oh, what a coincidence!"

She turned to leave, but then remembered that Shane Caldwell was also a member of the Caldwell Family and might know about Winter Sullivan’s condition. She turned back to him. "Do you know which hospital Sullivan is in? How is she doing now?"

Shane was a bit surprised by her question. "Sullivan? You mean my eldest aunt?"

Vera nodded, which only made Shane more curious. ’When did Vera get to know Winter Sullivan?’

Although he was curious, he didn’t press the issue. Instead, he asked a different question. "When was my aunt hospitalized?"

Hearing his question, Vera knew she’d asked the wrong person. She shrugged. "Susan Caldwell told me. I’m not really sure myself."

Since she wasn’t going to get any news about Winter Sullivan from him, she didn’t press further. She just said, "See you," and left.

Shane was left completely bewildered. Just then, Damian Yale happened to pass by. Seeing Vera and Shane talking, he asked curiously, "You know Vera Xavier?"

Damian Yale was the student union president. He had been at the freshmen dorms over the past few days for recruitment, and since Shane Caldwell was one of the more exceptional new students, Damian recognized him.

Shane found the evening bizarre; it seemed as if people who shouldn’t know each other all did. When he turned his head, he saw Damian Yale gazing in the direction Vera had left. He instantly became guarded and said nonchalantly, "Oh, she was my desk-mate in high school."

He walked away after saying that.

Damian was taken aback for a moment. In those days, being desk-mates implied a close relationship. He’d been hoping to get some information about Vera from Shane, but he never imagined Shane had actually been her desk-mate!

Most importantly, he could tell that Shane seemed to feel something special for Vera. If you were to ask him how he could tell, he wouldn’t be able to explain it. Perhaps it was a man’s intuition.

Damian wasn’t too worried, however. He could also tell that Vera didn’t feel anything special for Shane. If Shane had been able to win her over, he would have done it back in high school. Why wait until now?

With that thought, Damian calmed down. As long as Vera didn’t have a boyfriend, he still had a chance.

Vera was completely oblivious to what Shane and Damian were thinking. She was worried about Winter Sullivan, wondering if she was going to be all right.
