Chapter 71: The Door That Remembers

Rin woke before sunrise.

For several seconds, he simply stared at the ceiling.

Then he remembered. The door. His eyes opened completely.

"Today."

He sat up.

The memory returned with uncomfortable clarity. The strange forest, the ancient stone arch, the door that shouldn’t have been there, the words that had appeared on it, the feeling that something behind it had recognized him.

And most importantly—

the decision not to open it.

Rin looked toward his desk. The silver key was there.

He hadn’t touched it since last night he got out of bed and walked toward it.

The key looked completely ordinary. Cold silver. Small. Silent.

Rin picked it up.

Nothing happened.

"Good."

He put it into his pocket. Then he heard a knock.

"Come in."

Kaelith entered. He looked at Rin.

"You’re already ready."

"Yes."

"The forest?"

"Yes."

Kaelith smiled.

"I knew it."

Rin grabbed his coat.

"I’m not going to open the door."

"I didn’t say you were."

"You were thinking it."

"Maybe."

Rin smiled.

"Let’s go."

The dining hall was already occupied. Sol was sitting at the table with several pieces of parchment spread around him.

Noctis was examining one of the crystals recovered from the barrier. Ji-ho was eating. Aiden was drinking tea. Rin walked in.

"We’re going back."

Sol immediately looked up.

"The forest?"

"Yes."

Noctis put down the crystal.

"Good."

Ji-ho swallowed.

"I knew we’d go back."

Rin looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because every time something strange happens around you, you eventually go back."

"That’s not always true."

Ji-ho stared at him. Rin thought about it.

"...Usually."

Aiden smiled.

"I’ll come."

Rin looked at him.

"So will Ji-ho."

Ji-ho nodded.

"I’m staying here anyway."

Rin smiled.

"Right."

Aiden and Ji-ho had already made their decision. They weren’t leaving the fortress again after only one day, they were staying, that made Rin strangely happy.

The group had felt incomplete without them. Sol stood.

"I’ve prepared a second detector."

Noctis picked up his weapon.

"And I’ve checked the route."

Ji-ho raised his hand.

"I brought food."

Rin smiled.

"Excellent."

Ji-ho looked proud.

"I knew someone would appreciate my contribution."

Noctis nodded.

"We appreciate the food."

"Thank you."

"Not you."

Ji-ho’s smile disappeared.

"Rude."

Rin laughed. For a moment, everything felt normal. Then the System appeared.

[HOST.]

Rin’s smile faded.

"...Not now."

[THE SYSTEM HAS REVIEWED TODAY’S PLANS.]

"Yes?"

[THE MYSTERY WILL BE INVESTIGATED.]

Rin blinked.

"Correct."

[ROMANTIC PROGRESS MUST ALSO BE MAINTAINED.]

Rin closed his eyes.

"There it is."

[CURRENT ROMANTIC DEVELOPMENT: 16%.]

Ji-ho looked at Rin.

"Why did you suddenly look depressed?"

"Nothing."

[NEW ROMANCE OBJECTIVE WILL BE AVAILABLE LATER.]

Rin sighed.

"Fine."

At least it wasn’t interfering yet. The journey to the forest took several hours this time, nobody rushed.

Sol checked the magical readings every so often. Noctis watched the surroundings. Aiden occasionally stopped to examine strange marks in the trees. Ji-ho complained about the distance.

And Rin walked beside Kaelith, their shoulders occasionally brushed.

Neither mentioned it, Rin was beginning to suspect the System was deliberately pleased by this.

He ignored it. Eventually, the trees became denser. Sol looked at his detector.

"The energy is increasing."

Rin looked toward the forest ahead.

"How much?"

"Three times stronger than yesterday."

Noctis immediately stopped.

"Everyone stay together."

They continued carefully. Aiden suddenly spoke.

"Stop."

Everyone froze. Rin looked at him.

"What?"

Aiden pointed toward the ground. A faint line ran through the soil. Almost invisible. It looked like someone had dragged a finger across the earth. Sol crouched.

"Magical residue."

Noctis looked around.

"Recent?"

Aiden nodded.

"Very."

Ji-ho looked uncomfortable.

"Are we sure we want to keep going?"

Rin smiled.

"No."

Ji-ho sighed.

"Wonderful."

They reached the clearing. The ancient arch stood exactly where Rin remembered it but something had changed. The door was gone. Rin stopped.

"Where is it?"

Kaelith looked at the arch.

"It was here."

Sol examined the area.

"The energy is still here."

Noctis walked around the stone structure.

"Nothing."

Ji-ho touched one of the stones.

"Maybe it moved."

Everyone stared at him. Ji-ho shrugged.

"I’m just saying."

Rin approached the arch. The silver key suddenly became warm.

He took it out. The stone responded. A faint golden line appeared along its surface. Then another.

Then another. The markings formed a circle. Rin stepped back. The arch began to glow.

Kaelith immediately moved closer.

"Rin."

"I’m fine."

The System appeared.

[HOST.]

"What?"

[ROMANTIC DEVELOPMENT HAS BEEN TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED.]

Rin blinked.

"...What?"

[CURRENT SITUATION IS MORE IMPORTANT.]

Rin stared.

"Are you finally being serious?"

[THE SYSTEM CAN PRIORITIZE.]

Rin smiled.

"Thank you."

[TEMPORARILY.]

"...I knew there was a catch."

The golden circle finished forming. Then the stone arch spoke.

Not with a voice. With memory. Rin suddenly saw a room.

Not the room he’d seen before. Another one. A small room. Wooden walls.

A table. A window covered by rain. Someone was sitting beside the window.

Rin couldn’t see the face but he knew one thing.

The person was waiting. Waiting for someone. Then the vision changed.

A pair of hands placed something on the table, a silver key, the same key Rin was holding.

The vision disappeared. Rin stumbled.

Kaelith caught him.

"Rin."

"I’m okay."

Sol approached.

"What did you see?"

Rin took a breath.

"A room."

"Whose?"

"I don’t know."

Noctis looked toward the arch.

"Memory magic?"

Sol nodded.

"Probably."

Rin stared at the key.

"It showed me this."

He held it up.

"It was placed on a table."

Aiden’s expression changed. Rin noticed.

"You recognize it."

Aiden looked at the key.

"I’ve seen that room."

Silence. Rin stared.

"When?"

Aiden frowned.

"I don’t know."

"Do you remember anything?"

Aiden closed his eyes.

"Rain."

Rin’s heart skipped.

"Anything else?"

Aiden shook his head.

"Someone was waiting."

Rin looked at him.

"For whom?"

"I don’t know."

Noctis crossed his arms.

"That’s three things you don’t remember."

Ji-ho whispered:

"He’s collecting them."

Aiden looked at him.

Ji-ho smiled.

"Sorry."

The arch began glowing again. This time, words appeared not on a door, on the stone itself.

THE KEY WAS GIVEN.

Rin stared. Another line appeared.

THE DOOR WAS CLOSED.

Another.

THE CHOICE REMAINED.

Rin frowned.

"What choice?"

The stone remained silent. Then a final line appeared.

THE CHOSEN ONE WALKED AWAY.

Rin froze. The words vanished. Nobody spoke. Sol looked at Rin.

"What does that mean?"

Rin shook his head.

"I don’t know."

Kaelith looked at the stone. Neither did he but Rin felt something inside his chest.

A strange ache not a memory. More like the shadow of one.

Someone had been given a choice, someone had walked away.

But who? And why? Rin looked at Kaelith.

For the briefest moment, he wondered. Then he stopped himself.

No. He wouldn’t assume. Not now. The arch changed again.

A small opening appeared in the stone. Not a doorway. A compartment. Inside was a piece of black crystal. Sol immediately stepped forward.

"Don’t touch it."

Rin stopped.

"Why?"

"Because we don’t know what it does."

Noctis nodded.

"I agree."

Rin looked at the crystal. It pulsed once. Then again.

Aiden suddenly became pale. Rin noticed.

"Aiden?"

Aiden stared at the crystal.

"I know that."

"What?"

"The crystal."

He stepped closer.

"I’ve seen it before."

Rin waited. Aiden touched the edge of the stone. His hand stopped just before the crystal.

"I don’t remember where."

Ji-ho looked at him.

"Again?"

Aiden didn’t answer. Then the crystal displayed something. A single image. A clock. Ancient. Broken. Its hands were frozen. At one particular time.

Aiden’s eyes widened for the first time since returning to the fortress, he looked genuinely shocked.

Rin stared at him.

"Aiden."

Aiden whispered:

"I know that time."

Everyone became silent.

"What happened then?" Rin asked.

Aiden looked at the frozen clock.

"I don’t remember."

Rin frowned.

"But you recognize it."

Aiden nodded.

"Yes."

"Why?"

Aiden’s expression became troubled.

"I don’t know."

And this time, Rin didn’t press him. Something about the way Aiden looked at that clock told Rin that whatever memory was hiding there...

it wasn’t ready to return. The crystal suddenly went dark. The compartment closed.

The arch stopped glowing. Everything became ordinary again.

Sol exhaled.

"So..."

Ji-ho looked at him.

"So?"

Sol stared at the stone.

"We learned something."

Noctis nodded.

"The door isn’t simply a door."

Rin looked at the arch.

"It’s a memory."

Aiden added quietly:

"Or a record."

Rin nodded.

"And it knows about my past."

Kaelith looked at him.

"Then we’ll come back."

Rin smiled.

"Yes."

But this time, something was different.

They had actually learned something, the key had been part of an old choice, the door had been deliberately closed.

Someone had walked away and the strange crystal was connected somehow to a moment even Aiden couldn’t remember.

It wasn’t enough but it was progress.

Real progress. As they began walking back, Ji-ho suddenly stopped.

"Wait."

Everyone looked at him. He stared at his hands. A blue System window appeared.

[NEW INFORMATION ACQUIRED.]

Ji-ho frowned.

"What information?"

[THE SYSTEM WILL NOT DISCLOSE.]

Ji-ho stared.

"Why?!"

[BECAUSE IT IS NOT YOUR MAIN STORY.]

Ji-ho’s mouth fell open.

"...What?"

Aiden looked at him.

"Everything alright?"

Ji-ho slowly closed the window.

"No."

Aiden sighed.

"Let’s go."

Ji-ho followed.

"Your System is definitely involved in this."

Aiden glanced at him.

"Why?"

"I don’t know."

"Then stop accusing me."

"Never."

Rin laughed from ahead. The mystery of Ji-ho’s System would have to wait, that one could belong to another story.

For now, the journey back was quieter.

Rin walked beside Kaelith. The System remained silent. Then, after several minutes:

[HOST.]

Rin smiled.

"What?"

[TODAY’S MYSTERY PROGRESS WAS ACCEPTABLE.]

Rin laughed.

"Thank you."

[ROMANTIC PROGRESS, HOWEVER...]

Rin groaned.

"Here we go."

[16%.]

"Still?"

[YES.]

Rin looked at Kaelith. Kaelith smiled.

"What?"

"Nothing."

[SYSTEM RECOMMENDS A DATE.]

Rin sighed.

"We’ll see."

[THE SYSTEM WILL CONSIDER THIS A PROMISE.]

Rin laughed.

"Don’t."

Kaelith looked at him.

"Maybe we should."

Rin blinked.

"You actually want to?"

Kaelith smiled.

"Yes."

Rin’s face warmed.

"Then..."

He smiled.

"...maybe we will."

The System remained silent. For once and behind them, the ancient arch remained hidden among the trees.

The door had given them only a few pieces but they were real pieces.

The key the choice the person who walked away the broken clock and a memory that both Rin and Aiden had somehow touched without fully remembering.

It wasn’t time to solve everything but for the first time... the mystery had finally begun to answer back.
