Chapter 70: One Quiet Evening

The fortress had finally gone quiet.

Not completely, it never truly did.

There were always guards changing shifts, servants moving through the corridors, distant voices from the training grounds, and Sol probably still arguing with some magical device somewhere.

But compared with the chaos of the day... it was peaceful.

Rin and Kaelith continued walking through the gardens, their hands still together. Neither had said much.

For once, Rin didn’t feel the need to fill the silence. The moonlight rested softly over the garden paths.

Rin looked down at their hands.

"So..."

Kaelith glanced at him.

"So?"

"Nothing."

Kaelith smiled.

"You’re thinking about the System."

Rin sighed.

"Of course I am."

"Why?"

"Because it has become a menace."

Kaelith laughed.

"You didn’t seem to mind the last mission."

Rin looked at him.

"I did."

"You were smiling."

"I was not."

"You were."

Rin narrowed his eyes.

"You’re enjoying this too much."

"Maybe."

Rin smiled despite himself. They continued walking then Rin suddenly stopped.

Kaelith stopped too.

"What?"

Rin looked toward the fountain.

"Did you hear that?"

Kaelith listened. Nothing.

"Water?"

"No."

Rin waited. A faint sound had come from the other side of the garden.

Not a voice, not the forest whisper, just a metallic sound.

A small click.

Rin looked toward the shadows. Kaelith’s expression became serious.

"Should we check?"

Rin nodded. They walked toward the fountain.

Nothing was there only a small silver object lying beside the stone.

Rin crouched. He recognized it immediately.

"A piece of the barrier detector."

Kaelith looked at it.

"Sol’s?"

"Probably."

Rin picked it up. The moment his fingers touched it, a tiny golden light appeared.

Then vanished. Rin stared.

"What was that?"

Kaelith shook his head.

"I don’t know."

Rin looked at the fortress.

"We should tell Sol."

"Yes."

They turned. Then Rin stopped again. The System appeared.

[HOST.]

Rin closed his eyes.

"Please don’t."

[THE SYSTEM HAS DETECTED AN INTERRUPTION IN ROMANTIC PROGRESS.]

Rin opened his eyes.

"What?"

[HOST STOPPED HOLDING KAELITH’S HAND.]

Rin looked down. At some point, he’d released Kaelith’s hand while examining the object.

Kaelith looked at him. Rin sighed.

"You have got to be kidding me."

[ROMANTIC DEVELOPMENT HAS FALLEN BY 0.2%.]

"WHAT?"

Kaelith laughed. Rin pointed toward the empty air.

"This is not how relationships work!"

[SYSTEM DISAGREES.]

"You aren’t qualified!"

[SYSTEM HAS CONDUCTED EXTENSIVE RESEARCH.]

"Where?!"

[CLASSIFIED.]

Rin stared. Kaelith was laughing harder now.

"You think this is funny?"

"A little."

Rin sighed. Then held out his hand.

"Fine."

Kaelith took it.

[ROMANTIC DEVELOPMENT RESTORED.]

Rin looked at the sky.

"I hate you."

[THE SYSTEM APPRECIATES HOST’S CONTINUED PARTICIPATION.]

They returned to the fortress. Sol was exactly where Rin expected him to be. In the eastern workshop, surrounded by magical devices.

Noctis was there too, leaning over a table covered with crystals. Rin placed the silver piece on the table.

Sol immediately looked up.

"Where did you find that?"

"Near the fountain."

Sol picked it up. His expression changed.

"This shouldn’t be here."

Noctis stepped closer.

"What’s wrong?"

Sol examined the piece.

"This is part of the detector."

Rin nodded.

"I figured."

"But..."

Sol turned it over.

"...this wasn’t damaged."

Rin frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"The connection was deliberately removed."

Noctis straightened.

"Someone took it apart?"

Sol nodded.

"Yes."

Rin looked around.

"Why?"

Sol didn’t answer immediately. He examined the magical residue.

"Someone wanted the detector to stop recording."

Noctis’s expression hardened.

"So whoever has been testing the barrier knew about our equipment."

Rin nodded slowly. That was more concerning. They weren’t dealing with something blindly touching the fortress defenses.

Someone—or something—was learning.

Learning what? Rin didn’t know and he wasn’t going to guess.

Aiden entered the workshop. Ji-ho followed him, carrying two cups of tea.

"What happened?"

Sol explained. Aiden listened. Then looked at the broken detector.

"Interesting."

Rin looked at him.

"You know something?"

Aiden shook his head.

"Not enough."

Rin accepted it. Aiden wasn’t pretending to know more than he did. Ji-ho placed the tea down.

"Can I ask something?"

Sol nodded.

"If whoever did this knew about the detector, why leave the piece behind?"

Everyone became quiet. Noctis looked at the broken component.

"Good question."

Ji-ho smiled.

"I occasionally have those."

Sol ignored him. Rin looked at the piece.

"He might have left it deliberately."

Aiden looked at him.

"Why?"

Rin shrugged.

"Maybe it’s a message."

Noctis frowned.

"Or a warning."

Sol examined the piece again.

"There might be something encoded inside."

He placed it into a small magical frame. The crystal lit up. A faint projection appeared. Not a symbol, not words, a line, a single line moving across the projection.

Then it stopped. Rin stared.

"That’s it?"

Sol nodded.

"Apparently."

Ji-ho leaned closer.

"It looks like a heartbeat."

Rin looked at him. Ji-ho shrugged.

"I’m just saying."

Aiden’s expression changed. Very slightly. Rin noticed.

"Aiden?"

Aiden looked at the projection.

"That pattern..."

He stopped.

"What?"

"I’ve seen it before."

Rin waited.

"Where?"

Aiden frowned.

"I don’t remember."

The room became quiet. Then Ji-ho whispered:

"That’s becoming a habit."

Aiden looked at him. Ji-ho smiled innocently.

"What?"

A few minutes later, the group left the workshop. Sol remained behind to study the component. Noctis stayed with him.

Rin, Kaelith, Aiden, and Ji-ho walked back toward the main hall.

Ji-ho was unusually quiet. Rin noticed.

"What’s wrong?"

"Nothing."

Rin looked at him.

"Really?"

"Yes."

Rin nodded. Then Ji-ho suddenly stopped. A strange expression appeared on his face.

"Wait."

Rin turned.

"What?"

Ji-ho looked around.

"I..."

He frowned.

"...forgot something."

Aiden stopped beside him.

"What?"

Ji-ho stared at the floor.

"I don’t know."

Rin waited.

Ji-ho rubbed his forehead.

"That’s weird."

Aiden watched him carefully.

"Did you remember anything?"

"No."

Then Ji-ho suddenly looked at Aiden.

"You."

Aiden raised an eyebrow.

"What?"

"I feel like I’ve seen you somewhere."

Aiden smiled.

"We’ve known each other for a long time."

"No."

Ji-ho shook his head.

"Not like that."

He looked frustrated.

"I mean somewhere else."

Aiden became quiet. Rin watched them. Neither seemed to understand what was happening.

Then Ji-ho’s expression changed.

"Forget it."

Aiden nodded.

"Maybe it was nothing."

They continued walking. Rin didn’t ask. Some things were better left alone. At least for tonight.

Later, Rin returned to his room. Kaelith stood near the window.

"You’ve been busy."

Rin smiled.

"Apparently."

He sat on the bed.

"The barrier situation is getting stranger."

Kaelith nodded.

"But nothing happened tonight."

"That’s true."

Rin looked at him.

"And that’s what worries me."

Kaelith smiled.

"You always find something to worry about."

"Someone has to."

Kaelith walked over. He sat beside Rin, for a while, they were quiet then Kaelith gently reached for Rin’s hand.

Rin looked down.

"You remembered."

Kaelith smiled.

"The System would complain otherwise."

Rin laughed.

"Probably."

Their fingers intertwined. The System appeared.

[HOST.]

Rin smiled.

"What?"

[ROMANTIC DEVELOPMENT: 16%.]

Rin nodded.

"Good."

[THE SYSTEM IS SATISFIED.]

"Finally."

A pause.

[HOWEVER...]

Rin’s smile disappeared.

"No."

[THE SYSTEM HAS IDENTIFIED ANOTHER ISSUE.]

"What?"

[HOST AND KAELITH HAVE NOT HAD A PROPER DATE.]

Rin stared.

Kaelith raised an eyebrow.

"A date?"

Rin immediately pointed toward the empty air.

"Don’t you dare."

[NEW MISSION WILL BE UNLOCKED SOON.]

Rin groaned.

Kaelith laughed.

"You know..."

"What?"

"I wouldn’t mind."

Rin looked at him.

"Going on a date?"

Kaelith nodded.

Rin became quiet.

Then smiled.

"Maybe."

[ROMANTIC DEVELOPMENT: POTENTIAL INCREASE DETECTED.]

Rin laughed.

"You really are ridiculous."

Kaelith squeezed his hand.

"And yet you keep listening."

"Unfortunately."

They smiled at each other. For once, the System didn’t interrupt it simply watched.

And somewhere else in the fortress, Aiden stood alone by a window.

He looked toward the distant forest his expression was thoughtful.

Something had changed, he could feel it.

Something had noticed his return.

Something that did not want him getting too close to Rin.

Aiden closed his eyes, not now.

He wasn’t going to act yet. Rin needed time.

And Aiden had waited before. He could wait again for now...

In another corridor, Ji-ho was walking toward his room when a strange blue window appeared in front of him.

He stopped.

"...What?"

The window disappeared. Then returned.

[NEW SYSTEM CONNECTION ESTABLISHED.]

Ji-ho stared.

"Again?"

A second line appeared.

[PRIMARY LINK: AIDEN.]

Ji-ho’s face went blank.

"Oh, absolutely not."

From somewhere down the corridor, Aiden sneezed. Ji-ho looked in his direction.

"...This is definitely his fault."

Aiden’s voice came from far away.

"I heard that."

Ji-ho smiled.

"Good."

And that was all for now, their strange System could wait.

The deeper story could wait too. The doorway remained closed.

The World remained unknown. The Witness remained hidden. The truth of Rin’s ancient life remained buried.

And the mystery surrounding Aiden had only grown slightly deeper but tonight, none of it mattered.

Because Rin was finally beginning to understand that not every moment of his life needed to be about the past.

Some moments...could simply belong to him.

Rin remained by the window for a while after Kaelith left.

The room was quiet again, he looked down at his hand, he could still feel the warmth of Kaelith’s fingers. A small smile appeared on his face.

"Maybe a date wouldn’t be so bad."

The System immediately responded.

[ROMANTIC DEVELOPMENT DETECTED.]

Rin’s smile disappeared.

"Don’t."

[HOST IS BEGINNING TO ACCEPT THE ROMANCE SYSTEM.]

"I am not."

[DENIAL NOTED.]

Rin sighed.

"You really don’t know when to stop."

[CORRECTION: THE SYSTEM KNOWS EXACTLY WHEN TO STOP.]

Rin waited. Nothing happened.

"...Really?"

[NO.]

Rin laughed despite himself. He sat down at his desk and opened his notebook.

The page was already filled with questions about the forest, the barrier, the strange symbol, Aiden’s strange reaction, and the unknown energy surrounding the fortress. He stared at the notes for a moment.

Then, beneath everything, he wrote:

A date with Kaelith.

He immediately scratched it out. Then wrote:

Possible date.

He stared at it.

"That’s worse."

He scratched it out again. The System appeared.

[SYSTEM RECOMMENDS THE FIRST VERSION.]

Rin dropped his head onto the desk.

"I hate you."

There was a pause.

[SYSTEM KNOWS.]

Rin laughed quietly. For once, the laughter didn’t feel forced. He closed the notebook.

Tomorrow would probably bring another mystery.

Another question. Another strange event. Perhaps the forest would call again. Perhaps the barrier would react again.

Perhaps Aiden would remember something he had forgotten.

Perhaps Ji-ho’s strange new System would cause another disaster.

There were too many possibilities but Rin didn’t need to solve them tonight.

He stood and walked toward the window one last time, the moon was still shining over the distant forest.

Somewhere beyond those trees was a door that had once opened for him. a door that seemed to know something about his forgotten past.

Rin looked at it for several seconds. Then smiled faintly.

"Tomorrow."

He closed the curtains and for the first time in a long while, Rin went to sleep without trying to force an answer out of the darkness.
