The BL System Won't Let Me Rest!
Chapter 55: A Familiar Stranger
Rin couldn’t sleep.
The fortress had become quiet hours ago, but his mind refused to follow. He sat beside the window, looking at the moon.
The conversation with the God kept returning to him.
The betrayal. The curse. The person Rin had chosen before becoming Aelion.
The God had confirmed that it happened but he hadn’t known who that person was and he hadn’t known what happened before Rin became a god.
That meant there was still a part of Rin’s past that even the God couldn’t explain.
Rin looked down at his hands.
"Aelion..."
The name still felt strange. He knew it belonged to him but it wasn’t the whole story.
There had been something before Aelion. Something he had almost remembered.
A child. A woman. A voice. And someone whose face remained hidden.
Rin sighed.
"Why does every answer give me three more questions?"
A knock came from the door. Rin turned.
"Who?"
"It’s me."
Kaelith.
Rin opened the door. Kaelith stood outside.
"You weren’t sleeping."
"Neither were you."
"I was checking the fortress."
Rin raised an eyebrow.
"At this hour?"
Kaelith nodded.
"Yes."
Rin smiled.
"Of course."
Kaelith looked at him.
"You should rest."
"You sound like everyone else."
"Maybe everyone else is right."
Rin laughed. Then Kaelith noticed the tired expression on his face.
"What did the God tell you?"
Rin became quiet.
"Some things."
"Important things?"
"Very."
Kaelith didn’t ask for details. Instead, he simply leaned against the wall beside the door.
Rin looked at him.
"You’re not curious?"
"I am."
"But?"
"But you don’t have to tell me."
Rin smiled.
"Thank you."
Kaelith nodded. The silence between them felt comfortable. Then Rin suddenly remembered something.
"Can I ask you something?"
"Of course."
"Do you ever have dreams you don’t understand?"
Kaelith thought about it.
"Sometimes."
"About people you don’t recognize?"
"Sometimes."
Rin looked at him carefully.
"Have you ever dreamed about me?"
Kaelith became quiet. Then he nodded.
"Yes."
Rin’s heart skipped.
"What kind of dream?"
"I don’t know."
"Try."
Kaelith looked toward the window.
"Sometimes you’re standing somewhere I don’t recognize."
"Where?"
"A battlefield."
Rin froze. Kaelith continued.
"There is smoke. Fire around me and you’re looking at me."
Rin’s fingers tightened.
"Am I hurt?"
"I don’t know."
"Are you?"
Kaelith frowned.
"I don’t remember."
Rin stared at him.
"Anything else?"
Kaelith shook his head.
"Only one thing."
"What?"
"You always look sad."
Rin’s chest tightened. That was exactly what he had seen but he didn’t tell Kaelith.
"That’s strange."
"Yes."
Kaelith looked at him.
"Do you have the same dream?"
Rin hesitated.
"I’ve seen something similar."
Neither of them spoke. There was no explanation. No conclusion. Just two people standing in the same room with fragments of a memory neither understood.
The next morning, Rin went to the training grounds. Kaelith was already there. He was practicing with his sword.
Rin stopped at the entrance. He watched for a while. There was something about Kaelith’s movements that felt familiar.
Not his face. Not his voice. His movements. The way he turned his wrist. The way he shifted his weight.
The way he stepped backward before attacking. Rin had seen it before.
But where? Kaelith noticed him.
"You’re staring again."
Rin smiled.
"I was watching your technique."
"Why?"
"It feels familiar."
Kaelith lowered his sword.
"Have we trained together before?"
"Not like this."
Kaelith frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"I don’t know."
Rin walked closer.
"Can you show me that movement again?"
Kaelith did. Rin watched carefully. Something stirred inside him.
A flash.
Two people. Standing beneath a red sky. One was holding a sword.
The other—
Rin couldn’t see.
The memory disappeared before he could understand it.
He blinked. Kaelith immediately lowered his sword.
"Rin?"
"I’m fine."
"You froze."
"I remembered something."
"About this?"
Rin nodded.
"What?"
"I don’t know."
Kaelith didn’t push. Instead, he extended the sword toward Rin.
"Try."
Rin took it.
"It’s heavier than I expected."
"You’ve never trained with a demon’s weapon."
"Apparently not."
Kaelith stepped behind him.
"Your grip is wrong."
He gently adjusted Rin’s hand. Rin felt his fingers against his. For a moment, everything went quiet. Then another memory flashed.
A hand over his. A voice laughing.
"You’re holding it wrong."
Rin’s eyes widened. Kaelith immediately stepped back.
"What happened?"
"Nothing."
"You’re sure?"
Rin nodded.
"Yes."
Kaelith studied him. Then he smiled faintly.
"You’re a terrible liar."
Rin laughed.
"You don’t know that."
"I know you."
The words were simple but something about them struck Rin.
I know you.
He looked at Kaelith. For one strange moment, he felt as though someone had said those words to him long ago.
Not Kaelith. Someone else. Or perhaps...the same person. Rin quickly pushed the thought away.
"Again."
Kaelith raised an eyebrow.
"What?"
"Teach me again."
A small smile appeared on Kaelith’s face.
"Fine."
They trained for nearly an hour. Rin wasn’t particularly good. Kaelith pointed that out several times. Rin protested several more.
Eventually, Rin lost his balance. Kaelith caught him before he fell. Again.
Rin looked up.
"You really like catching me."
Kaelith raised an eyebrow.
"You really like falling."
"I don’t."
"You do."
Rin laughed. For a few seconds, they remained like that.
Kaelith’s arm around his waist. Rin’s hand resting against his chest.
Neither moved. Then Rin realized how close they were. He immediately stepped back.
"Sorry."
Kaelith looked away.
"You don’t have to apologize."
Rin smiled awkwardly.
"Right."
The silence afterward was slightly different. Not uncomfortable.
Just...new.
Neither knew what to call it. So neither tried. Later that afternoon, Rin returned to the library.
He wanted to understand the memory. He found the same white feather. The same mysterious crystal but this time, he didn’t touch either.
Instead, he sat down and closed his eyes.
"Show me the battlefield."
Nothing happened.
"Show me Kaelith."
Nothing.
"Show me who I was."
Silence. Rin sighed.
"You’re very difficult."
The System appeared.
[MEMORY ACCESS DENIED.]
Rin frowned.
"Why?"
[MEMORY IS SEALED.]
"By whom?"
The System flickered.
[UNKNOWN.]
Rin stared. He tried again.
"Is the memory real?"
No answer. The System disappeared.
Rin sat quietly. Then he heard it.
Ding.
He froze. The bell but nobody had spoken. Rin slowly opened his eyes.
"So the memory isn’t entirely true."
He didn’t know which part was false. That was the dangerous part. The ability could tell him something was wrong.
It couldn’t automatically explain what the truth was. He would have to discover that himself.
Rin looked at the feather. He decided not to touch it.
If his memories had been altered, forcing them open could be dangerous. He needed patience.
Something he wasn’t particularly good at.
That evening, Rin found Kaelith standing on the western balcony the sun was setting behind the mountains.
Rin walked beside him.
"You like this place."
Kaelith looked at him.
"The view?"
"Yes. I do."
Rin leaned against the railing.
"I think I understand why."
"Why?"
"It’s quiet."
Kaelith nodded.
"Sometimes quiet is better."
Rin smiled.
"You don’t seem like someone who likes silence."
"I don’t."
"Then why?"
Kaelith looked at him.
"Because when everything is quiet..."
He paused.
"...I can think."
Rin nodded.
"I understand."
They watched the sun disappear.
After a while, Rin asked:
"Do you believe people can meet more than once?"
Kaelith looked at him.
"In different lives?"
Rin’s heart skipped.
"Maybe."
Kaelith thought about it.
"I don’t know."
Rin looked down.
"I think some people are pulled toward each other."
"By fate?"
"Maybe."
Kaelith smiled faintly.
"Do you believe in fate?"
"I don’t know."
Rin looked at him.
"But I think I’d rather believe people still have a choice."
Kaelith’s expression softened.
"That’s better."
Rin smiled.
"You agree?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because if everything is fate..."
Kaelith looked toward the sunset.
"...then choices don’t mean anything."
Rin stared at him. The words struck something deep inside him.
The same idea. The same feeling. The same invisible thread connecting his forgotten past to his present.
Rin quietly said:
"Then I hope we always get to choose."
Kaelith looked at him.
"So do I."
Their eyes met. Neither looked away.
Rin felt his heart beat faster he didn’t understand why but he didn’t move.
Neither did Kaelith. For a few seconds, the world seemed very far away.
Then Rin smiled.
"You’re staring."
Kaelith smiled.
"So are you."
Rin laughed.
"Fair."
They remained there until the sky became dark.
Neither of them noticed the faint golden mark appearing beneath Rin’s skin. Neither noticed the strange warmth moving between them and neither understood why Rin’s soul seemed to recognize something his mind had forgotten.
Not betrayal. Not the curse. Not the ancient battlefield. Only one simple feeling.
Familiar.
That night, Rin returned to his room.
He sat beside the window, he thought about Kaelith.
About the dreams. About the battlefield. About the strange familiarity but he refused to make assumptions.
He didn’t know who Kaelith had been in his forgotten past. He didn’t know what happened in that ancient life. He didn’t know why they kept appearing in each other’s memories and he certainly didn’t know whether Kaelith had anything to do with the betrayal the God had described.
Rin closed his eyes.
"One mystery at a time."
The System appeared.
[MEMORY FRAGMENT DETECTED.]
Rin opened his eyes.
"What now?"
A small image appeared. Two figures standing beneath a red sky.
Their faces were hidden. One reached toward the other.
Then the image vanished. Rin stared.
No answer. No explanation. Only a feeling.
A promise. And somewhere deep inside his soul, a voice whispered:
"Don’t remember everything at once."
Rin looked toward the darkness.
"I wasn’t planning to."
He smiled faintly. Then he went to sleep.
Unaware that, in another part of the fortress, Kaelith had just awakened from the same dream.
And for the first time...Kaelith whispered a name he didn’t understand.
"Rin..."
