The BL System Won't Let Me Rest!

Chapter 50: The Memory That Wasn’t His

  • Next Chapter

Rin didn’t sleep.

He remained beside the dying fire until the first light of morning reached the mountains.

Sol had eventually fallen asleep. Rin hadn’t told him what he had discovered.

He couldn’t. The bell was still inside his mind.

Quiet. Waiting.

He had finally understood what it meant. Someone could lie without meaning to hurt him.

Someone could repeat something they genuinely believed to be true. And yet the bell could still sound.

That meant the ability wasn’t simply detecting someone’s intentions. It was detecting truth itself.

Rin looked toward Sol. His brother was still sleeping. Rin remembered the conversation from the previous night.

If you remember your full name, the System won’t be able to protect you anymore.

Ding.

A lie. But Sol hadn’t deliberately lied.

Someone had given him false information. Or perhaps... someone had altered something he remembered.

Rin slowly stood. He needed answers. But first, he needed to test one thing. He walked toward the river.

The water was frozen on the surface, but beneath the ice, he could hear the faint movement of the current. Rin crouched.

"Is the System lying to me?"

Nothing happened.

No bell. He frowned. That wasn’t an answer. He tried again.

"Is the System hiding information from me?"

Silence.

Then the System appeared.

[SYSTEM RESPONSE: YES.]

Rin stared. The bell didn’t ring. He exhaled.

"So you’re allowed to hide things."

[CORRECT.]

"Why?"

[ACCESS RESTRICTED.]

"By whom?"

The System flickered.

[UNKNOWN.]

Rin narrowed his eyes. He didn’t know whether to believe that. But the bell remained silent.

Interesting. He sat beside the river.

"Then let’s try something else."

He looked at the reflection of his face in the ice.

"Is Sol in danger?"

The System appeared.

[YES.]

The bell didn’t ring. Rin’s expression changed. That frightened him more than a lie would have.

"Because of me?"

[PARTIALLY.]

No bell.

Rin looked away.

"Is Kaelith in danger?"

[YES.]

No bell.

"Noctis?"

[YES.]

No bell.

Rin’s stomach tightened.

"Everyone around me."

The System didn’t answer. Rin already knew. The curse wasn’t simply following him. It was beginning to reach the people connected to him.

He stood.

"We’re going back."

The others were awake by the time Rin returned. Kaelith was already organizing the group. Noctis stood near the horses. Sol was packing supplies.

Rin approached him.

"Sol."

His brother looked up.

"Yes?"

"Last night."

Sol stopped.

"The dream."

"What about it?"

"Did Father say anything else?"

Sol thought.

"I don’t remember."

Ding.

Rin froze.

Sol looked at him.

"What?"

"Nothing."

The bell had sounded. But this time, Rin noticed something different.

Sol’s face. He wasn’t trying to deceive him. He genuinely didn’t remember. That meant the problem wasn’t Sol.

Something had been placed inside his memory. Rin looked at his brother.

"That’s okay."

Sol smiled.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

Rin turned away. His heart was racing. He needed to investigate this without making Sol suspicious. They continued toward the fortress.

The journey took most of the day. Rin remained unusually quiet. Kaelith noticed.

"You’ve been thinking."

Rin glanced at him.

"Do I do that often?"

"Too often."

Rin smiled.

"I have a question."

"Ask."

"If someone gave you false information..."

Kaelith waited.

"...but they genuinely believed it was true, would you consider them a liar?"

Kaelith thought about it.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because lying requires choice."

Rin looked at him.

"So you think intention matters."

"Yes."

Rin nodded.

The bell didn’t ring. He believed him. Kaelith continued walking.

"But why are you asking?"

Rin shrugged.

"Curiosity."

Kaelith didn’t press. Rin looked ahead. The answer mattered. Because his ability didn’t seem to care about intention.

It cared about whether something was true. That meant...the bell could reveal things even the person speaking didn’t know were false.

That made it far more dangerous. And far more useful. By sunset, the fortress appeared beyond the mountains.

Rin stopped. He hadn’t realized how much he had missed it.

The walls. The towers. The familiar roads. Even the soldiers. It felt strange to return after everything that had happened.

Kaelith noticed his expression.

"Welcome home."

Rin smiled.

"Thanks."

They entered through the main gate. Several soldiers immediately recognized them.

"General!"

Kaelith nodded. Rin followed him inside. Noctis walked beside him. Sol remained on the other side.

Everything seemed normal. Until Rin stepped into the main hall.

The System appeared.

[WARNING.]

Rin stopped.

[FOREIGN MEMORY SIGNATURE DETECTED.]

His heart skipped.

"Foreign?"

[YES.]

"Where?"

The System pointed toward the upper floors. Rin looked up. The old library.

He remembered the room. They hadn’t visited it since returning.

Rin glanced at Sol.

"Stay here."

Sol frowned.

"Why?"

"I want to check something."

"By yourself?"

"Yes."

Sol looked like he wanted to argue. Rin smiled.

"I’ll be fine."

Sol reluctantly nodded. Rin walked upstairs. Noctis watched him go.

Kaelith noticed.

"Something wrong?"

Noctis shook his head.

"Not yet."

The library was exactly as Rin remembered.

Dusty. Quiet. Rows of old books. He walked toward the center. The System appeared again.

[MEMORY SIGNATURE: NEARBY.]

Rin looked around. Nothing. He walked between the shelves. Then he saw it.

A small book lying on the floor. It hadn’t been there before. Rin picked it up.

The cover was blank. No title. No author. He opened it.

The first page was empty. The second was empty.

The third... contained a single sentence.

YOU HAVE BEEN READING THE WRONG MEMORIES.

Rin froze. He turned the page.

THEY ARE NOT ALL YOURS.

His heart stopped. Another page.

SOMEONE GAVE YOU MEMORIES THAT BELONG TO ANOTHER LIFE.

Rin’s fingers tightened around the book.

"Another life?"

He turned the page. Nothing. Then another. Nothing. Until the final page.

There was a name.

Not Aelion. Not Rin. A different name. Rin stared at it.

He couldn’t pronounce it.

But he recognized the feeling. It was wrong.

It didn’t belong to him. The bell rang.

Ding.

Rin’s eyes widened.

The statement in the book was true. Some of his memories weren’t his. He looked at the pages again.

His hands began shaking. The memory of the child. The temple. The divine palace. The moments he’d recovered... Were they really his?

Rin slowly closed the book.

"No."

He didn’t want to believe it. But the bell had already answered. Some memories had been given to him.

Someone had inserted them. Someone had manipulated his understanding of his own past.

But why?

The door opened. Rin immediately turned. Kaelith stood there.

"You left suddenly."

Rin quickly hid the book behind his back.

"I found something."

Kaelith looked at him.

"What?"

Rin hesitated. Then he held out the book.

Kaelith took it. He opened the first page.

Blank. Second.

Blank. Third.

Blank. Kaelith looked at Rin.

"There’s nothing here."

Rin stared.

The book was empty. His heart pounded.

"That’s impossible."

Kaelith turned another page.

Still blank. Rin reached for it.

The moment his fingers touched the paper—

the words returned.

YOU HAVE BEEN READING THE WRONG MEMORIES.

Rin pulled his hand away. Kaelith saw nothing.

"What happened?"

Rin stared at the blank book.

"Nothing."

The bell didn’t ring. Kaelith hadn’t lied.

He genuinely saw nothing. Rin understood. The book wasn’t revealing itself to anyone except him.

Why?

Because it wasn’t really a book. It was a message meant for him. And someone had known he would eventually find it. Kaelith handed it back.

"If you need help..."

"I know."

Kaelith nodded. Then he left. Rin waited until the door closed.

He opened the book again. The words returned.

This time, a new sentence appeared.

THE MEMORY OF AELION IS REAL.

Rin exhaled. So at least that part was true. Another sentence appeared.

BUT IT IS NOT COMPLETE.

Rin stared. A third line formed.

SOMEONE REMOVED THE MEMORY OF WHAT HAPPENED BEFORE YOU BECAME AELION.

Rin’s heart stopped. Before Aelion. There had been something before the God of Love.

Something older. Something he had forgotten completely. Then the final line appeared.

THAT IS WHERE THE CURSE BEGINS.

Rin slowly closed the book. For the first time since his memories began returning... he understood that he hadn’t been trying to remember his past.

He had been trying to remember only the version of it that someone had allowed him to see. And somewhere in the darkness of the library... a bell rang again.

Not inside his mind. This time, from the corridor. Rin looked toward the door.

Someone was standing outside. He couldn’t see them. But he could hear a whisper.

"You’re looking in the wrong place."

Rin stood.

"Who are you?"

Silence. Then footsteps disappeared down the corridor. Rin ran to the door.

The hallway was empty. But on the floor lay a single white feather.

Rin picked it up. The moment he touched it, another memory flashed.

Not Aelion. Not the God. Not Eryon. A completely different place. A dark room.

A child crying. And someone whispering:

"Don’t let him become a god."

The memory vanished. Rin stood frozen. He looked at the feather. Then at the empty corridor.

Someone had been trying to stop him from becoming Aelion.

And suddenly... the mystery became much older than the curse.

Much older than the God. Much older than this world. Rin closed his hand around the feather.

"Then I’ll find out what happened before Aelion."

He didn’t know yet that, somewhere far away, the God had just felt the same memory awaken.

And for the first time in centuries... the God was afraid of what Rin might remember next.
