The Archmetamagician: The Weave Collapses Again
Chapter 342
'This isn't going to cause some huge commotion, is it?' Anser couldn't help feeling a little worried.
But things had already come this far. There was no way he could back down now.
"Take it easy at first. Keep yourself under control. I'll take you to an extraplanar space, and then we can discuss what to do next," he cautioned, still uneasy.
"I understand. I won't repeat Netheril's mistakes."
Sakkors restrained himself in an instant, though his eyes shone with an almost frightening intensity.
Anser stepped outside to inform the two elders, then watched as they shut down the sealing array, its runes gradually dimming.
The next moment, the entire underground chamber seemed to change color. Vast torrents of Magic Power surged madly toward the mythallar, sending out rings of magical radiance so dense they seemed almost tangible.
Sakkors floated at the center of the crystal sphere, his expression one of blissful intoxication as he siphoned in everything without discrimination. Whatever had happened to his promise from moments ago was anyone's guess.
'And I actually believed your bullshit!'
From underground, Anser couldn't see what was happening at the Star Palace or across the Rock of Bral, but he didn't need to. He could already imagine how much of a commotion this was causing.
He hurried over to the mythallar and activated the Rod of Security, intending to send it into Holrewen. Yet the attempt met with tremendous resistance. This was already far beyond the Rod of Security's normal capabilities.
Fortunately, Anser was still its master. He forcibly slowed the rate at which the mythallar absorbed Magic Power and made it actively cooperate with the transfer.
Light and shadow flashed.
Anser and the sphere vanished simultaneously.
All that remained were two utterly horrified elders and the violently churning vortex of Magic Power.
High above Holrewen, an enormous crystal sphere leapt out of the void and hovered over the Black Tower.
Every intricate pattern within it had lit up. Lightning raced through its interior like shuttles, and at a glance, it looked uncannily like a brain operating at tremendous speed.
Boom—!
The normally peaceful skies over Holrewen suddenly darkened. Storm clouds gathered overhead as thunder rolled incessantly. Blinding serpents of lightning repeatedly exploded across the mythallar before dissipating.
It was like a god concealed within the thunderstorm.
Even as its master, Anser had no choice but to fly farther away. Raw magic had already lost the constraints of the Weave, and under this stimulation it became exceptionally violent and almost impossible to regulate.
In a situation like this, all he could do was leave everything to Sakkors.
Endless torrents of Magic Power crossed dimensional barriers, surging like a raging current. They formed a vortex wider than the island itself before pouring backward into the mythallar.
It wasn't a divine miracle, yet it might as well have been!
Everyone in Holrewen stared upward in stunned silence, their hearts filled with awe and reverence.
'So this is the foundation upon which Netheril's glory was built?'
Anser was secretly shaken.
Even at the height of the Netherese Empire, there had never been more than fifty mythallars. Some were stronger than others, but ultimately, they were still only Legendary items.
'The goddess of magic isn't going to come knocking, is she?'
Forget the goddess herself—even having the Blackstaff or one of the Seven Sisters, those Chosen of the goddess, come after him would be troublesome enough.
'Probably not. The ones who got punished before were all stealing from the Weave and siphoning off its power…'
If the goddess was still alive, she should be busy repairing the Weave right now. Why would she have the time to worry about anything else?
While Anser's thoughts wandered, however, the mythallar's energy level continued climbing rapidly, gradually showing signs of slipping out of control.
And the one openly contesting Anser for Attunement was none other than Sakkors.
This great arcanist appeared to be the spirit of the mythallar, yet he could wield psionics with complete freedom!
'I knew you weren't going to behave yourself.'
Anser sneered.
Those great arcanists had once compared themselves to gods. Their ambitions reached higher than the heavens themselves. How could someone like that willingly submit to his command?
For a moment, Anser found himself thinking that Bral's royal family wasn't entirely useless after all.
At the very least, they had always been able to resist this kind of temptation.
Being a little cowardly, perhaps, but it had kept them safe and stable.
Anser closed his eyes and sank his consciousness into his mind.
The shattered-gold die continued to spin. Wisps of golden and silver radiance vanished into the void, while Sakkors Mythallar flickered erratically in the equipment section of his Character Sheet.
'You're not fighting me for it. You're fighting my die. If you can actually wrest it back from that thing, I'll accept it!'
Anser wasn't worried in the slightest. Anything that entered the equipment section was as good as having its name written in the Book of Life and Death. The die had already locked onto it, and trying to break free was nothing but a fool's dream.
It was indeed possible to wrest Attunement rights over equipment away from its owner, but only under specific conditions, such as when the owner was in poor condition or the item had been lost.
Anser was currently in perfect condition, and on top of that, he had the die, a physical manifestation of rules themselves. Unless Sakkors became a god on the spot, he didn't have the slightest chance.
As time passed, Anser's connection to the mythallar grew increasingly strong, far surpassing that of conventional magic items such as the Arcanefire Longbow.
The die quietly generated a unique Character Sheet for it, resembling a control interface complete with detailed descriptions. Every secret and function of Sakkors and the mythallar was laid bare before him.
If Anser wanted to, he could completely destroy Sakkors while leaving the mythallar itself intact.
{Sorry. Just now... I got too excited and lost control.} Sakkors's telepathic message came through, his tone no different from before.
Anser opened his eyes and looked over. The turbulent magical energy had already settled, now flowing into the mythallar like a gentle stream.
A light drizzle began to fall from the sky. The dark clouds gradually dispersed, and daylight flooded back in.
"Is that so?"
With a thought, Anser brought the mythallar to an abrupt halt. A terrifying energy field imprisoned Sakkors at the center of the sphere and began steadily applying pressure, gently grinding away and burning through every inch of his spiritual form like a millstone.
Sakkors finally panicked.
{Master! I'm still useful! You don't want the mythallar to remain at this level forever either...}
Anser remained unmoved. Floating before the mythallar, he continued increasing the pressure.
The sight made Maeve's scalp prickle. She immediately decided she had better be more diligent from now on.
Generally speaking, intelligent magic items were the ones calling the shots. Their users had to humor them, and someone who treated one the way Anser did was exceedingly rare.
Moreover, almost no one could destroy an item's intelligence without damaging the item itself.
{Master, I was a great arcanist in my former life. I can help you build a flying city...}
{I never intended to leave. I only wanted a certain degree of autonomy...}
Sakkors frantically sent message after message. He wasn't afraid of death, but he didn't want to die so meaninglessly. There were still many ideas he had yet to bring to fruition.
Anser kept him under pressure a while longer before finally releasing him.
"I don't need you that badly. You won't get a second chance," he said calmly.
"Yes. I understand."
Sakkors emerged from the mythallar. This time, he truly realized that the times had changed. Everything was far too abnormal.
He hurriedly reported the situation, putting what had just happened behind him.
"Master, the mythallar has completed its initial energy storage, and the Micro-Weave has taken its preliminary form. At present, it already covers this entire extraplanar space..."
Anser brought up the mythallar's control interface. The data displayed there was far more detailed.
The Micro-Weave wasn't limited to covering Holrewen. Holrewen was simply too small, and it hadn't yet had time to extend into more distant regions and other planes.
The Micro-Weave wasn't literally a web. It was a complex, three-dimensional, multidimensional energy matrix that permeated and enveloped the worlds of the multiverse. It could be understood as an invisible network of magical energy pathways and nodes.
It concealed itself within the gaps of the true Weave, making fewer alterations to the structure of Magic Power. That made it far more difficult to detect and extremely easy to expand.
In theory, anywhere Magic Power existed, the Micro-Weave could actively spread, and even planar barriers wouldn't obstruct it.
'Isn't this basically a super-server?! Using it as nothing more than an energy core would be such a waste.'
As Anser stared at the mythallar's functions, countless possibilities raced through his mind.
