The Adopted Cannon Fodder Made a Comeback
Chapter 529 - 512+513: Extortion and Counter-Extortion
Gu’er looked at the fat woman. Some people just can’t stand to see others doing better than them.
"Five hundred? Fine. We can afford it."
Gu’er said calmly.
"Sis, are we really giving her five hundred? She’s clearly just trying to extort us."
Sui’er asked in a low voice. She knew her sister wasn’t one to back down from trouble, but with their father’s current position, she was afraid Gu’er was choosing to appease the woman just to avoid a scene.
"You said it yourself! Hurry up and get the money. Hand over the cash, and we’ll call it even. Otherwise, you’ll be sorry."
A look of triumph and greed flashed in the fat woman’s eyes. ’This is great!’ she thought. ’I got to curse out two shameless hussies and scored five hundred bucks for free. I can go on a real spending spree later.’
Gu’er took the money out of her purse. Sui’er had asked her to go shopping, and she couldn’t possibly let her younger sister pay. Sui’er wasn’t earning money at the moment. Besides, she had already spent a lot buying gifts for everyone when she returned home. That’s why Gu’er had brought plenty of cash with her today.
"Five hundred. This is the right amount, isn’t it?"
Gu’er counted out five hundred yuan and waved the bills at the fat woman.
"That’s right, that’s right."
The fat woman nodded eagerly, the greed in her eyes intensifying. ’I can’t believe these two little hussies are so rich,’ she thought. ’They must have gotten the money from some man. If I’d known, I would’ve asked for more. I can see she still has a few hundred in her purse... Maybe I can come up with another reason to get that, too?’
’It’s not like these two hussies earned this money honestly, anyway. If I spend it for them, I’ll just be doing a public service.’
The fat woman schemed.
Sui’er wanted to say something but held her tongue. ’Since my sister doesn’t want me to talk, I’ll just let her handle it.’
"I can give you this five hundred yuan."
Gu’er held the money out to the fat woman.
The fat woman hastily reached out to snatch it. Gu’er let her take the cash, but before the woman could pull her hand back, Gu’er grabbed her wrist. "Not so fast," she said. "We’ve paid you the compensation you demanded. Now it’s time to calculate what you owe *us*."
"Pay you? What would I owe you for? Your sister bumped into me, not the other way around! Don’t you dare try to scam me. You have no idea who you’re messing with."
The fat woman’s eyes went wide. She tried to yank her hand free, but Gu’er’s grip was surprisingly strong. She struggled a couple of times but couldn’t break loose.
"I have no interest in who you are, and I don’t need to know. All I know is that my sister bumped into you, you demanded five hundred yuan as compensation, and we paid it. Now, it’s our turn to discuss the compensation you owe us."
Gu’er said in a cold voice, her grip on the woman’s wrist tightening.
"Fine. I’d love to hear what kind of compensation you think you can get from me. If you spout any nonsense, I’ll slap the life out of you and let everyone here get a good look at what a pair of bitches you are."
The fat woman spoke hatefully. She had been so pleased about getting five hundred yuan for nothing, and was even mulling over whether she could trick them into bumping her again to scam the rest of the money from Gu’er’s purse. She never expected them to turn the tables and demand money from her. The very idea infuriated her.
"You verbally abused my sister and me, causing my sister extreme psychological and emotional distress. You also damaged her reputation. We are now demanding one thousand yuan from you as compensation for emotional damages."
Gu’er said in a heavy tone, staring at the fat woman.
The moment Gu’er finished speaking, it wasn’t just the fat woman who was stunned; the crowd of onlookers on the street began to murmur among themselves. This "compensation for emotional damages" was a new concept to most of them, and they found it fascinating.
"The hell? What are you even talking about? I don’t get it. Since when is it a problem for me to curse you out? And I have to pay you a thousand yuan for it? What, are you people that broke? Daring to extort *me*! Watch out, or I’ll slap you silly."
The fat woman’s eyes bulged as she huffed with rage.
"If you slapped me to death, you’d have to pay with your life, and we wouldn’t be having this conversation. But forget killing me—even if you just slap me, that’s assault. I could have you sued and thrown in jail. If you don’t understand my demand for compensation, I’ll repeat myself. You insulted my sister, causing her mental and emotional trauma. You damaged her reputation and caused her to suffer. For that, you must apologize and pay compensation."
"You probably felt good getting a few insults off your chest, but have you ever considered the effect on the person you’re berating? Your insults could give my sister deep-seated emotional problems. She’s a university student. Your words could make her lose her focus on her studies, ruining her entire future. Maybe your verbal abuse will make it impossible for her to find a boyfriend, to start a family. Maybe she’ll never be able to live a happy life, all because of you. This is a lifelong impact, something that can’t be fixed with a paltry sum of money. Therefore, asking you for one thousand yuan for emotional damages is not excessive at all. If you think it’s unreasonable, then we can file a lawsuit. We’ll let a judge decide whose claim is more unreasonable: you demanding five hundred from us, or us demanding one thousand from you."
