The Aboveboard Assassin
Chapter 135 - 120: Chaos, Total Chaos!
Chapter 135: Chapter 120: Chaos, Total Chaos!
Taking advantage of the current downtime, the three couldn’t help but start discussing.
"The Great City Lord doesn’t have much time left. Conspiring to murder the Deputy City Lords now is all about fighting for the Great City Lord’s position," Su Hong said, a thoughtful expression on his face. "According to the principle of ’whoever benefits is the prime suspect,’ the Fourth City Lord is the most likely one to have hired assassins."
"But the President and Sa are on two different sides," Ji Xiaoyu said softly. "So, there might be two suspects."
"Maybe one of them was hired by the Fourth City Lord, and the other by the Second City Lord or the Third City Lord," Su Yue offered her own thoughts.
"Or perhaps the Second City Lord and the Third City Lord hired assassins to kill each other," Ji Xiaoyu said with a slight shake of her head. "It’s just too hard to tell based solely on the information we have now."
While conversing, the three were also using their Communication Buttons to express their views. Before they could continue their conversation, Patriarch Lomon suddenly walked over with swift steps, his face grave. "You three, we have a problem.
"A group of Red Ghosts is heading this way."
The Red Ghosts were coming? Ji Xiaoyu and the other two lowered their Communication Buttons, their expressions turning serious.
"Patriarch, leave it to us!" Su Hong shouted. He then led Ji Xiaoyu and Su Yue toward the direction the Red Ghosts were approaching from.
Soon, amidst the rising dust in the distance, they could clearly see the appearance of the Red Ghosts. All three sets of pupils contracted at the exact same time.
"This is..."
-----------------
"We’re screwed," Salas said, reading the group’s discussion with a look of utter resignation. "Of the four City Lords of Red Cloud City, one is dying, two others are about to be offed by us, and that just leaves a nobody.
"If we keep playing like this, can we really clear the Dungeon?"
What was originally a perfectly fine Dungeon had completely devolved into chaos!
[Salas: President, what should we do next? Are we really going to kill both City Lords?]
Although that was indeed the guidance the Dungeon had given them, the Dungeon’s guidance wasn’t necessarily right. If following along with the Dungeon could guarantee a perfect clear, there wouldn’t be so many Dungeons that had yet to be perfectly cleared to this day. Many things had to be judged by themselves.
On his end, Yu Zhun read Salas’s question, a thoughtful look appearing on his face. He didn’t have any specific requirement for the timing of the assassination. However, for an Assassin, the most logical choice was to kill the Second City Lord at the exact same time the Wild Grass Society created chaos and assassinated the Third City Lord. That way, they could also dump the blame for killing both City Lords onto the Wild Grass Society.
However, Salas’s words had hit the nail on the head. The Dungeon’s guidance dictated it, but whether or not to actually kill them wasn’t up to someone else. They had to decide that for themselves.
Yu Zhun tapped the desk, a trace of decisiveness surfacing in his eyes.
[Yu Zhun: Sa and Sheila, hold your positions. I’ll secretly investigate these three City Lords before making a decision. Rich Lady and the Su family siblings, just continue escorting the Red People as normal.]
[Salas: No problem!]
Rich Lady and the other two didn’t reply, but Yu Zhun didn’t mind. They were escorting the Red People in the wilderness and could encounter emergencies at any moment. It was completely normal for them to not have time to check their messages.
Opening his skill list, Yu Zhun temporarily swapped out Swift Step and Shadow Punishment for the Assassin-exclusive skills, Lurking and Dark Walk. The latter allowed him to conceal his movements while in action. Although it wasn’t useful in most situations, Yu Zhun had already learned all the Basic Assassin-exclusive skills; after all, he wasn’t short on money right now.
With these two skills, he would be able to secretly investigate the situations of the three Deputy City Lords. Hearing something was deceiving, but seeing it was believing. He could only decide whether to kill them or not after investigating each of them one by one.
Pushing open the window of his inn room, Yu Zhun climbed out in an incredibly unnatural posture under the effects of Sword Dance. Soon, his figure quietly faded away. At this moment, the Assassin Yu Zhun truly looked the part of an Assassin.
Soon, Yu Zhun arrived at the closest location: the logistics management office of Red Cloud City, where the Fourth City Lord, Sosha, was located. He slipped into the man’s office.
He was a middle-aged man in his forties, frowning slightly as he processed documents one by one. Stacks of files and paperwork sat on his desk. Yu Zhun maintained his stealth, standing in the corner of the office and quietly watching him. Over the next few hours, the sound of flipping pages never ceased—until a figure strode forcefully into Sosha’s office.
"Mr. Sosha, there’s news regarding the Great City Lord!"
Sosha’s pen halted. He stood up abruptly and looked at the newcomer. "What’s the situation?"
"Our scouts said that the Great City Lord has refused to let anyone enter his room since this morning."
"Is there not much time left...?" Sosha’s expression quickly turned solemn. Finally, he let out a long sigh, returned to his seat, and continued processing the unfinished documents until the evening lights were lit.
Lurking told Yu Zhun that the other party hadn’t discovered his presence. Leaving quietly, Yu Zhun strolled over to the Third City Lord Seins’s office.
At this hour, the man had already gotten off work. However, this didn’t stump Yu Zhun. After making some simple inquiries, he headed straight for a specific location. It was a high-end bar, entirely different from the underground pub Yu Zhun had been in before.
"Drink up!"
As a waiter entered the best room in the bar, Yu Zhun pressed closely against him and silently slipped inside. An excited shout immediately reached his ears.
Seins was holding a wine glass, his face already showing signs of drunkenness. He was surrounded by sycophants, and there was no shortage of scantily clad women by his side. When he heard someone call him "Great City Lord Seins," the drunken middle-aged man couldn’t help but burst into laughter, his face full of smug satisfaction.
A few minutes later, Yu Zhun followed a departing waiter out. Immediately after, he arrived at Louis’s front door.
Before he could even figure out a way to sneak in, a furious middle-aged man strode out of the house, muttering angry curses under his breath.
"Seins, that bastard. Once I become the Great City Lord, I’ll absolutely crush him to pieces!"
Yu Zhun was left speechless. Shaking his head wordlessly, Yu Zhun turned around and walked in the direction of the inn.
Taking out his Communication Button, he saw the message Ji Xiaoyu had sent earlier, which he hadn’t had time to read. A glint of sharp light flashed through Yu Zhun’s eyes. As he walked, he pieced all the information together. Finally, he flipped back into his room through the window he had left cracked open.
Having figured everything out, Yu Zhun smiled. He now knew exactly what he needed to do next. However, this was a First Turn Trial, after all. Even if a regular 3A Dungeon strategy failed, as long as one could leave safely, the losses wouldn’t be too great. But a First Turn Trial allowed no room for failure. Therefore, he needed to add a layer of insurance to his hypothesis.
Pulling out the item Simulation Card from his backpack—which he had exchanged for ten Divine Demon Medals—Yu Zhun chose to use it. This card allowed him to simulate the strategy for the current Dungeon ten times.
Yu Zhun closed his eyes, then opened them again a moment later. "Sure enough, everything is exactly as I guessed."
He picked up the Communication Button.
[Yu Zhun: Sa, Sheila, tomorrow, follow the mission requirements. Create chaos and kill the Third City Lord, Seins.]
[Yu Zhun: Rich Lady, after the three of you kill the Red Ghost Commander tomorrow, come to Red Cloud City and rendezvous with us as soon as possible.]
After sending the two messages, Yu Zhun slowly put down the button.
"Well then, see you tomorrow.
"Old ’friend’."
-----------------
Red Cloud City’s annual celebration day arrived as scheduled.
This was the grandest festival of the year in Red Cloud City. All the residents changed into their best clothes early in the morning and went out with their families. The bustling streets were filled with the cries of vendors, and the aromas of various foods lingered in the air. Joy and happiness—everything was incredibly peaceful. Even the higher-ups of Red Cloud City, usually busy handling official affairs, took a rare break from their work to celebrate with the people on this special day.
Colorful flags fluttered, and ribbons danced in the air. In the largest square in the center of Red Cloud City, the moment the group of high-ranking officials stepped onto the viewing platform, the densely packed crowd below erupted into deafening cheers and shouts.
That was until a violent explosion rang out. An incredibly eye-catching beam of light shot up rapidly from somewhere on the ground, instantly drawing everyone’s attention before exploding at its highest point. A chibi-style avatar of Salas appeared in the sky. As the avatar dissipated, green motes of light scattered like fireworks, falling rapidly and enveloping almost the entire square.
Were they fireworks? Countless residents stared blankly at the falling specks of light, until they finally hit the ground...
The foul stench of canned herring immediately engulfed the entire square. Amidst sounds of retching, the square that held tens of thousands of people instantly descended into chaos.
"The Salas-brand stink bomb—you’re worth it," a certain green-haired culprit said smugly from outside the square.
Sheila released her bowstring, which had long been drawn to its limit. She watched as the arrow completely emptied the health bar of the target on the viewing platform, before speaking expressionlessly.
"President."
Salas’s expression changed drastically. He was doomed!
