Chapter 266 - 100: Youjiang Renamed Aurora, Son or Daughter
After the first trimester, Shen Yanzhi became incredibly cautious. He even started sleeping on the floor, claiming, "I’m afraid I’ll crush you."
Even now, the two of them were still sleeping separately.
She wasn’t sure if it was the pregnancy hormones, but she felt like she was at a voracious age, wanting nothing more than to devour Shen Yanzhi every single day.
Yet Shen Yanzhi was like a total saint. No amount of teasing worked on him, to the point that she was starting to wonder if he was even capable anymore.
The more Jiang Li thought about it, the more upset she became. She stopped eating her cake, setting it aside, and started to cry out of frustration.
Seeing this, Shen Yanzhi immediately dropped to his knees in front of Jiang Li. "Baby, what’s wrong? Did I say the wrong thing? Was I too rough?"
Jiang Li turned her head, refusing to look at Shen Yanzhi. She didn’t want to cry, but she just couldn’t help it.
After all, she wasn’t someone who cried easily.
Jiang Manshu arrived with a pot of beef brisket and potatoes, just in time to see Jiang Li crying. Without a second thought, she grabbed a nearby feather duster and started whacking Shen Yanzhi with it.
"Mom, why are you hitting me all of a sudden?" Shen Yanzhi yelped as he dodged the blows.
Jiang Manshu snorted. "Xiao Li is crying her heart out. You must have upset her. If I’m not going to hit you, who am I going to hit?"
Ever since finding out Jiang Li was pregnant, Jiang Manshu had brought over homemade food for practically every meal, treating Jiang Li like royalty.
And now Jiang Li was crying on top of it all.
Therefore, it was all Shen Yanzhi’s fault, no matter what. He deserved to be hit.
Jiang Li had been feeling upset, but watching Jiang Manshu chase Shen Yanzhi around, whacking him until he was hopping all over the place, she couldn’t help but let out a snort of laughter. "Mom, stop hitting him! He didn’t do anything to upset me."
Jiang Manshu paused at her words, but still not feeling vindicated, she gave Shen Yanzhi two more whacks before finally setting the feather duster aside.
She placed the thermal container on the coffee table, plopped down next to Jiang Li, and took her hand. "Xiao Li, how about I just move in here to take care of you?"
Jiang Li shook her head. "It’s alright, Mom."
’She’s already bringing food over for every meal. If we lived together, wouldn’t it be even more over-the-top?’
Afraid of upsetting Jiang Manshu, she quickly added, "Besides, our houses are so close, it’s practically like we’re living together anyway."
Jiang Manshu frowned. "But what if he upsets you again next time?"
Pregnancy is already hard enough on a woman, and giving birth is like a trip to hell and back. She just wanted to make things a little easier for Jiang Li.
Jiang Li scratched her head in embarrassment. "Actually, he didn’t do anything to upset me... I just suddenly felt like crying for no reason."
Jiang Manshu patted Jiang Li’s hand. "That’s perfectly normal. It’s because of the pregnancy hormones."
"It was the same when I was pregnant with that little rascal," she said, referring to her son. "I would cry at the drop of a hat. If I couldn’t eat what I was craving, I’d cry. If I was hungry, I’d cry. If something was too spicy, I’d cry. Basically, I cried for any and every reason."
Jiang Li nodded in vehement agreement. "That’s exactly how I am. I feel like crying whenever the slightest thing goes wrong."
Jiang Manshu jutted her chin toward Shen Yanzhi. "When you feel like crying, just give him a good whack, and you won’t feel like crying anymore."
Jiang Li couldn’t help but chuckle, covering her mouth. "Anyone who didn’t know better would think I’m your daughter and he’s your son-in-law."
After all, it was rare to find a mother-in-law who treated her daughter-in-law so well, but she had somehow managed to find one.
Jiang Manshu laughed cheerfully. "To be honest, that’s exactly how I think of it."
"I mean, what’s the point of having sons? They aren’t nearly as sweet and caring as daughters."
With that, she looked at Jiang Li’s belly and added wistfully, "I’m really hoping you have a little girl."
Jiang Li had actually asked Shen Yanzhi about the whole boy-or-girl question before.
Shen Yanzhi had immediately made his stance clear. "A daughter, of course. A beautiful one just like you. Then I could buy her lots of pretty little dresses."
"But if it’s a son... well, he’d better pray he’s not too much of a troublemaker, or he’ll be getting a lot of spankings behind your back."
’Daughters were the best. A daddy’s sweet and caring little girl.’
’But a son was different. A son would just be competition for his wife’s affection.’
’Jiang Li already had him, and that was enough.’
This was the first time she’d discussed the topic with Jiang Manshu, however. She had assumed Jiang Manshu would prefer a grandson.
After all, most people in her generation had a preference for boys over girls.
Jiang Li asked tentatively, "So, what if I really do have a daughter?"
Jiang Manshu clapped her hands in delight. "A daughter would be wonderful!"
Then she added with a grin, "I’ve even picked out a name already."
Jiang Li was a little surprised. "Oh? Already?"
’And here I am, the mother, and I haven’t even thought of a name yet.’
