Ten Lucky Draws: I Got Ten SSS-Rank Talents!
Chapter 62: Night
Leon stood in the cavernous, freezing expanse of the glacial temple, the ethereal golden flames of the Blade of the Dragon God casting long, dancing shadows against the ice.
The weapon felt entirely weightless in his grip, an extension of the draconic soul-bond now anchoring him to the massive beast before him. Frost crept slowly up the fluted columns lining the temple walls, and every breath he exhaled hung suspended in the air for a heartbeat longer than it should have.
Auris, the Glacial Sovereign, lowered his jagged, sapphire-plated head. A low, rumbling purr vibrated from the dragon’s chest, shivering the air itself, the sound rolling outward across the frozen stone like distant, muted thunder.
Leon reached up with his free hand, adjusting the heavy, rune-lined dark hood over his head. He dismissed the flaming greatsword into his inventory, resting a leather-gloved hand against the dragon’s freezing snout. He could feel the raw, Adept-tier power pulsing just beneath the scales, a steady, ancient rhythm that seemed to answer his own heartbeat.
"Let’s not waste any time," Leon said, his breath misting in the frigid air. He stepped toward Auris’s massive foreleg, preparing to pull himself up onto the beast’s armored back. "We have a Void mist to clear."
"Chosen Hero, I beg you, halt!"
Elder Vaelen’s voice echoed through the temple, frantic and breathless. The ancient Dragonkin hurried forward, his carved staff clicking rapidly against the permafrost, the sound sharp and hollow against the vast, silent chamber.
Leon paused, turning his head. Beneath his dark hood, his dual-colored eyes, one icy blue, the other burning gold, fixed upon the Elder with piercing intensity.
"The Void Mist is not a foe to be challenged in the dark," Vaelen urged, panting as he reached the base of the dais, one hand braced against his knee to catch his breath. "It is nightfall in the Expanse. The mist is thickest when the moons rise, a suffocating blanket that swallows all light and direction. You must wait until the afternoon, when the crimson sun reaches its zenith. Its natural light is the only thing that pierces the upper layers of the Shattered Crags. It will aid your navigation and keep the creeping entropy at bay."
"I have Origin Eyes and a Glacial Sovereign," Leon countered, his voice echoing with absolute confidence. "I’ve slaughtered my way through dark zones before. I prefer to get it done and out of the way."
Vaelen shook his head stubbornly. "Hero, I do not doubt your divine might. But the Void Mist does not fight you; it consumes you. To fly blindly into it is a needless risk. Please. Stay the night in my home. I will prepare a grand chamber for you. We have a roaring hearth, the finest spun-silk bedding, spiced Leviathan meats, a private mineral hot spring—"
Leon stopped.
His hand slid off Auris’s scales. The intense, battle-ready posture he had been holding completely evaporated, his shoulders dropping in an instant as though someone had simply switched off the tension running through him.
"Hmm," Leon murmured, tapping his chin thoughtfully. "A hot spring, you say?"
"A deeply restorative one, yes," Vaelen blinked, slightly caught off guard by the sudden shift in the Hero’s terrifying demeanor. "Fed directly from the mana veins deep beneath the Azure Scale."
Leon stood in silence for exactly three seconds, his expression cycling through a brief, entirely unconvincing performance of deep strategic consideration.
"Since you insist," Leon said smoothly, projecting an aura of grave, reluctant wisdom. "And you have made an incredibly valid point regarding the ambient sunlight of this Adept-tier sector aiding my navigation through the Void Mist... I will follow your advice. It would be foolish of me to ignore the counsel of someone far more knowledgeable on the local atmospheric conditions."
Vaelen let out a massive sigh of relief, bowing deeply. "Your wisdom is as vast as your power, Chosen Hero. Right this way."
Leon offered Auris a brief, telepathic pulse of reassurance through their new soul-bond, instructing the massive dragon to rest and gather its strength. The dragon rumbled once in acknowledgment, curling its long, sapphire-scaled body around the base of the frozen dais before settling into a deep, contented stillness. Then, Leon followed the Elder out of the freezing temple and back into the vibrant, bioluminescent night of the village.
Vaelen’s home was an expansive, elegant estate situated near the rushing blue mana river. It was constructed of polished dark wood and sweeping sapphire roofs, exuding a quiet, ancient dignity, the faint glow of the river outside casting soft, rippling patterns of light across the paper screens.
As the heavy wooden doors slid open, a small blur of silver and blue scales launched itself across the woven tatami mats.
"Grandfather!"
A little Dragonkin girl, standing barely three feet tall, skidded to a halt in the entryway. She possessed large, bright golden eyes, tiny swept-back horns that were still growing in, and a long, energetic tail that thumped happily against the floorboards. She wore a simple, beautifully embroidered tunic of pale blue silk.
She looked past Vaelen, her huge eyes locking onto the towering, imposing figure of Leon standing in the doorway, clad in his dark, gold-embroidered draconic garb.
She didn’t cower. Instead, she gasped, her tail swishing faster, thumping an excited, uneven rhythm against the mats.
"Are you the Hero?" she asked, her voice high and musical. Without waiting for an answer, she dropped into a perfectly executed, incredibly clumsy, and undeniably adorable bow, nearly toppling forward onto her own tail in the process. "Welcome to our home, Lord Hero! I’m Kaelia!"
Leon felt a sudden, unexpected warmth bloom in his chest. The relentless, blood-soaked grind of the Elimination Cycle faded for a moment. He knelt down so he was eye-level with the little girl, offering her a gentle, genuine smile that softened the harsh duality of his heterochromia.
"It’s a pleasure to meet you, Kaelia," Leon said softly. He reached out and gently patted her small, scaled head. "Thank you for letting me stay in your home." ℴℴ𝘮
Kaelia beamed, practically vibrating with excitement, her tail whipping back and forth so fast it nearly knocked over a nearby vase. "Grandfather said you’re going to chase away the bad fog! You have to be super strong to do that!"
"I promise I’ll chase it far away," Leon said.
Vaelen smiled warmly at the exchange before gently ushering his granddaughter away toward the kitchens, her small, indignant protests fading down the hall as she was carried off still trying to catch one last glimpse of their guest. He then guided Leon down a quiet, lantern-lit corridor, stopping before a set of sliding bamboo doors.
"The hot spring is yours, Chosen Hero. May the waters soothe your soul."
Leon didn’t need to be told twice.
He stepped into the private bathing chamber, shedding the heavy dark garments and golden belts. The hot spring was a masterpiece of natural architecture, a deep basin carved from smooth, grey river stones, filled with steaming, crystal-clear water that glowed with a faint, soothing blue luminescence, wisps of fragrant steam curling lazily toward the wooden rafters above.
