[Chapter 211. The Ancient Terror]
In a subterranean cave of staggering dimensions that swallowed sound and suffocated light, a ruined ziggurat stood like the fossilized corpse of a forgotten god. Its colossal stones, blackened by the merciless passage of millennia, bore manic markings. These alien inscriptions were etched in a maddening script that existed nowhere in human memory—a wretched language birthed when the System first carved this dread-soaked dungeon from the bedrock of nightmares. Deep burn marks and splatters of long-dried blood marred both the cavern walls and the crumbling masonry of the stepped pyramid. The air itself felt thick, laden with the suffocating dust of pulverized bone, stagnant moisture, and the coppery tang of old massacres.
Suspended far above the ziggurat's jagged peak, held aloft by iron chains thick as the mainmasts of dreadnoughts, hung a gargantuan beast. Its massive, segmented form was a monument to necrotic ruin. Mummified scales, shimmering with an unnatural, sickly luster, seemed to drink the dim, dying glow from the carved runes and the sputtering amber lantern light of the mortals gathered below. The creature's wings, once majestic leathery membranes capable of eclipsing the sun, now hung in tattered, rotting ribbons. Slabs of necrotic tissue sloughed from its frame, revealing a ruinous anatomy. Thick, porous white bones protruded like jagged mountain peaks from the blackened, saponified flesh. Yet, the remaining scales clinging to its desiccated, festering remains reflected a haunting iridescence against the ethereal blue light of the dungeon. A profound, crushing silence suffocated the air, broken only by the rhythmic, maddening drip of foul condensation and the metallic groan of massive iron links straining under the weight of the decaying titan.
"We have bled in this tomb time and time again, yet we have never fully conquered it," a tall man with weather-beaten features called out. His voice resonated with raw emotion and the bone-deep fatigue of a veteran who had seen too many comrades torn asunder. His dented plate armor bore the scars of many battles and the deep grooves of monstrous claws. "One boss has always forced us into a retreat. This monstrosity."
He gestured upward with his blood-stained blade, its chipped edge catching the faint, trembling light. "This will be our last chance to defeat this horror before the System infuses our world with further madness. Today is the day we shatter its skull."
The man paused. The weight of past massacres sank into the lines of his hardened face. "We have lost too many lives on these steps." His shoulders slumped under the phantom weight of the dead. "Good men and women whose severed remains we could not even recover. Warriors whose names we still honor every passing day."
He took a deep breath, forcing iron back into his spine. "But since our last attempt, we have hardened. We have grown stronger and tempered our skills in the blood of lesser horrors. We will not spit on the memory of the fallen. They gave their lives, their very souls, to see this abomination fall. Let us challenge this undead tyrant. Slay it. Eradicate it. We close the gap today." His voice boomed through the cavern.
"We will be the second team in the world to reach this bloody milestone." He raised his weapon even higher, the scratched metal glinting in the cavern's gloom. "For the dead, and for those we must protect!"
The ragged company of warriors, over a dozen souls battered by the dungeon's cruelty, erupted in a cacophony of cheers and primal warcries. Their voices bounced off the ancient, blood-soaked stone and reverberated through the hollow ribcage of the suspended dragon. Swords clashed against dented shields in a percussive, deafening rhythm. Behind the heavy vanguard, spellcasters began weaving preliminary hexes, their trembling hands tracing jagged patterns of volatile light against the crushing dark.
The leader’s features hardened into a mask of pure determination. He stepped down from the shattered, sacrificial altar stone, his iron-shod boots grinding against the ancient, dusted surface. With a deliberate, rigid motion, he offered a curt nod to one of his rearguard—a gesture carrying the phantom weight of countless failed crusades.
"Do it, Sakura," he commanded, his voice a low rumble in the cavernous expanse.
A short woman draped in elaborate ceremonial robes stepped forward. The ivory fabric of her mantle, embroidered with silver threads, seemed to reflect what little ambient light remained, casting her as a radiant figure in the dim light. The interlocking iron rings of her staff chimed with each deliberate step, the sound echoing like bells in a vast, desecrated cathedral. She walked towards a towering, monolithic stone tablet erected at the edge of the ziggurat's sacrificial platform.
As she approached the jagged inscription—etched in the same mind-bending script as the surrounding ruins—the rest of the team shifted into battle formation. Shield-bearers locked their heavy bulwarks at the front, their reinforced armor clashing in absolute defense. Spellcasters positioned themselves with clear lines of sight, eyes wide with terror and adrenaline. Archers nocked heavy, armor-piercing arrows, their knuckles white, bowstrings humming under immense tension.
The moment Sakura's fingers, adorned with cold silver rings, brushed against the monolithic stone's surface, she began to recite the forbidden text. Her voice, sharp and resonant despite the overwhelming scale of their surroundings, wove through guttural syllables that felt older than time itself.
The ethereal blue glow of the surrounding runes flickered, dying out like snuffed candles, before shifting into a deep green. This malignant light pulsed in time with her rhythmic chant. The glyphs swelled with each unnatural word she forced from her throat. They blazed with an increasingly blinding, violent radiance, the stone itself seeming to twist beneath the influence of her voice.
High above, the rattle of the massive iron chains escalated into a deafening roar. It became a violent cacophony of grinding metal that vibrated through the cracked stone beneath their boots. Unsettling, sickening sounds joined the metallic shriek—the unmistakable noise of calcified bone snapping into place and rotting, leathery flesh tearing as the grotesque symphony of a dead god reawakening commenced. The cavern air turned dense, choking them with the putrid stench of ancient decay mixed with a sharp, metallic wrongness that tasted of rusted pennies and bile.
As Sakura spat the final, damning word, the green light from the runes detonated outward in a blinding, concussive flash. The radiance collapsed back into the stone, plunging the cavern into an terrifying near-darkness. A system message materialized in each of their visions the text burning against the gloom of their sputtering lanterns.

From the blackness above, a thunderous, world-ending roar shattered the silence. It was a sound that defied the physical laws of a rotted throat, a soul-tearing bellow that shook centuries of dust and loose rock from the ceiling. Piercing green light flared from the abyss directly over their heads, illuminating the descent of horror.
A massive chain, rusted and pitted with the corrosive wear of forgotten epochs, snapped. The sound rivaled a splitting mountain. The colossal iron link plummeted with terrifying velocity, crashing into the steep, terraced slope of the ziggurat with enough kinetic force to shatter the ancient bedrock.
The impact sent violent, bone-rattling tremors through the entire structure. The shockwave made teeth ache and brought several seasoned combatants to their knees. The severed chain, acting like a colossal, metallic serpent, whipped and slid down into the stygian depths below the altar with a deafening clamor. Its destructive passage echoed for what felt like an eternity before the abyss swallowed it whole.
Seconds later, a barrage of structural failures followed. More chains shattered, each breaking with the concussive boom of a thunder strike. Their metallic, agonized shrieks echoed through the vast cavern as tons of dead iron plummeted toward the earth. Finally, with a resounding crack that threatened to tear the very foundations of the ziggurat apart, the last primary chain gave way.
The gargantuan, rotting corpse of the dragon came crashing down.
It struck the apex of the pyramid in a cataclysmic impact. A choking, blinding cloud of pulverized stone, bone dust, and dried necrotic flakes billowed outward. The raw kinetic force of its fall cracked the massive platform beneath the vanguard's feet. The ground heaved and trembled, the ancient stone groaning in agonizing protest as if the entire tomb might cave in upon them.
Through the settling cloud of debris, a nightmare manifested. Within the dragon's torn, mangled chest cavity—where colossal ribs of yellowed, fractured bone protruded like a jagged mountain range from a landscape of desiccated, black meat—a malevolent green flame ignited. It burned with a ferocious intensity that defied all natural laws. This ethereal fire pulsed with a parasitic vitality, casting wild, dancing shadows that writhed across the bloodstained stones like the tortured souls of the damned.
The abomination lifted its massive, horned skull. Colossal vertebrae ground together in a sickening symphony of decay and dark, forbidden magic. The beast dragged itself upright, finding its footing with an impossible grace for a creature so ravaged by time and absolute death.
In one swift motion, it flared its broken limbs. Tattered, hole-ridden membranes unfurled like a macabre parody of their former majestic glory. The dragon unleashed another roar—a devastating sonic wave that transcended hearing. It was a physical force, vibrating through their organs, rattling their teeth, and threatening to shatter their very minds.
Its empty eye sockets, hollow voids that should have remained dark and lifeless forever, now burned with the same green hellfire that consumed its chest. These twin points of otherworldly, hateful light pierced the settling dust. They locked onto the trembling mortals below. The gaze offered no mercy, promising an agony far beyond the simple, clean oblivion of death.
