Chapter 79: The Territory of the Apex
The underground world remained quiet throughout the night.
That quietness was deceptive.
There was no true darkness inside Blackstone Dungeon. The mana crystals scattered across the distant mountains provided a faint blue-white glow, while the silver trees around the expedition camp released small pulses of purified mana at regular intervals.
Subin sat beneath one of those trees with Simple Edge resting across his lap.
He hadn't slept much.
Instead, he had spent the night observing the environment.
The dungeon behaved differently after sunset.
Some monsters became active.
Others disappeared into burrows.
Flying creatures moved toward the mountains.
The silver forest became more active, exchanging mana through its roots and branches.
It was almost like watching an entire world breathe.
Subin closed his eyes.
His perception expanded.
He could feel the mana around him.
Not directly controlling it.
Not absorbing it.
Simply observing.
A faint pulse passed through the ground.
Then another.
Then another.
The pulses moved toward the eastern mountains.
Subin opened his eyes.
Something was changing.
He stood.
"Yerin."
Han Yerin emerged from the nearby camp almost immediately.
"What happened?"
"Mana movement."
She looked around.
"What about it?"
"It's moving toward the mountains."
The researcher, who had been checking equipment nearby, hurried over.
"Which mountains?"
Subin pointed.
"The eastern ridge."
The researcher activated his scanner.
His expression changed.
"He's right."
Yerin looked at the readings.
"What does it mean?"
"I'm not sure."
Subin watched the forest.
"Something is drawing mana toward that area."
"Another mana storm?"
"No."
He paused.
"The monsters are moving too."
That was enough to wake everyone.
The expedition quickly packed their equipment.
Within ten minutes, they were ready to move.
They left the silver forest behind and followed the edge of the valley toward the eastern ridge.
The closer they came, the stronger the mana became.
Monster activity increased.
Several creatures fled across their path.
A group of Level 70 wolves abandoned their hunting ground.
A herd of horned beasts moved in the opposite direction.
Even flying monsters changed their routes.
Kang Min-seok watched them.
"Why are they all leaving?"
Subin looked toward the mountain.
"Because something stronger is coming."
The group became silent.
They continued carefully.
After another twenty minutes, they reached the base of the mountain.
The terrain had changed.
The black stone was covered in deep cracks.
Mana crystals protruded from the ground.
Some were glowing.
Others had shattered.
The researcher examined one.
"Mana density is extremely high."
"How high?"
"Almost ten times higher than the valley."
Yerin frowned.
"Then why aren't monsters fighting over it?"
Subin looked upward.
"They are."
Everyone followed his gaze.
Hundreds of monsters occupied the mountain slopes.
But they weren't fighting.
They were keeping their distance from one another.
Each species controlled a small territory.
And every territory was separated from the next.
The arrangement was strangely orderly.
Subin understood.
"This is an apex territory."
The researcher nodded slowly.
"Meaning?"
"Several powerful creatures live here."
"And they tolerate each other?"
"Probably because each controls a different resource."
Yerin looked toward the upper mountain.
"Then what caused the mana movement?"
Subin didn't answer.
He was watching the highest peak.
Something was there.
Not moving.
Just existing.
The pressure was enormous.
Subin could feel it even from this distance.
His hand naturally moved toward Simple Edge.
Not from fear.
From instinct.
He wanted to know.
"What rank?" Kang asked.
Subin didn't answer immediately.
The researcher tried scanning the peak.
The device failed.
He tried again.
Nothing.
"No reading."
"Why?"
"I don't know."
Subin looked at him.
"Don't use the scanner again."
"Why?"
"Because it won't help."
The researcher hesitated.
Then nodded.
The expedition continued along the mountain's outer edge instead of approaching the peak directly.
Their goal wasn't to fight.
It was to understand the territory.
They passed several powerful monsters.
A giant black bear, Level 88.
A six-legged reptile, Level 91.
A winged predator, Level 89.
A crystal-backed tiger, Level 94.
None attacked.
Each watched the expedition carefully but remained within its territory.
Subin noticed something.
The monsters weren't merely stronger than those in the valley.
They were more developed.
Their bodies were better adapted.
Their mana circulation was more efficient.
Their abilities were more specialized.
The dungeon had created an evolutionary hierarchy.
The deeper they went, the greater the environmental pressure became.
And the stronger monsters had adapted to it.
Eventually, they reached a narrow canyon.
The walls were covered with glowing crystals.
A river of liquid mana flowed through the center.
The researcher stared at it.
"That's..."
Yerin approached carefully.
"Another mana river?"
"Yes."
"But this is different from the one in the Indian dungeon."
Subin crouched beside the river.
The mana was extremely dense.
But unlike the previous mana river, this one wasn't flowing continuously.
It pulsed.
Every few seconds, the entire river brightened.
Then dimmed.
Subin studied the rhythm.
"Seven seconds."
The researcher looked at him.
"What?"
"The pulse."
He counted.
"Seven seconds."
The researcher checked his equipment.
"He is correct."
Subin watched another pulse.
Seven seconds.
Again.
Seven.
The river wasn't random.
Its flow followed a pattern.
Subin smiled faintly.
"The environment has rhythm."
Kang Min-seok laughed.
"Are you going to fight the river too?"
"No."
Subin looked at him.
"But it might teach me something."
He sat beside the river.
Simple Edge remained sheathed.
For several minutes, he observed.
The mana surged.
He watched.
It weakened.
He watched.
The surge returned.
Slowly, Subin began to understand the relationship between the river's movement and the surrounding crystals.
The crystals weren't simply storing mana.
They were regulating it.
The river pushed mana into them.
The crystals absorbed part of the pressure.
Then released it gradually.
The entire system prevented the mana from becoming unstable.
Subin's eyes narrowed.
It reminded him of swordsmanship.
Force.
Control.
Flow.
Continuity.
The same principles appeared everywhere.
He didn't force the comparison.
He simply observed it.
The system appeared.
[Environmental Sword Observation.]
[Seven Sword Principles detected in natural mana circulation.]
Subin looked at the message.
The seven principles weren't unique to swords.
They were expressions of balance that existed throughout nature.
Foundation.
Flow.
Control.
Intent.
Edge.
Continuity.
Adaptation.
And beyond them—
Choice.
Subin slowly stood.
His understanding deepened.
[Sword Intent: 87.2% → 87.8%.]
The increase was small.
But genuine.
He looked at Simple Edge.
The sword remained silent.
Then—
The mountain shook.
Everyone immediately turned.
A roar echoed from above.
The pressure that Subin had sensed earlier suddenly descended over the entire mountain.
Several monsters fled.
The mana river surged violently.
Crystals shattered.
Yerin raised her spear.
"Everyone, defensive formation!"
The expedition members gathered.
Subin looked toward the peak.
A creature was descending.
It wasn't flying.
It was walking down the mountain.
Each step caused the ground to tremble.
The creature was enormous.
Nearly twelve meters tall.
Its body resembled a humanoid gorilla, but its entire surface was covered with black crystalline armor.
Four massive arms extended from its torso.
Each hand had six fingers.
A crown of jagged crystals grew around its head.
Blue mana flowed through its body like veins.
The researcher attempted to scan it.
The device immediately overheated.
"Level... ninety-eight."
Everyone became tense.
"Rank?"
The researcher stared at the broken screen.
"I can't determine it."
Subin looked at the creature.
He could.
Not its exact rank.
But its strength.
It was stronger than the Level 96 A+ creature they had encountered earlier.
Much stronger.
The creature stopped.
It looked directly at Subin.
Then its gaze moved toward Simple Edge.
Subin slowly drew the sword.
The creature raised one arm.
Mana gathered around its fist.
Yerin shouted.
"Subin!"
"I'll handle it."
Kang Min-seok stepped forward.
"No. We're fighting together."
Subin looked at him.
Then smiled.
"Fine."
The creature attacked.
Its fist struck the ground.
The mountain exploded.
A shockwave tore through the canyon.
The expedition scattered.
Subin jumped backward as the ground beneath him collapsed.
The creature charged through the debris.
Its four arms moved independently.
One fist.
Second fist.
Third.
Fourth.
The attacks came from different directions.
Subin blocked the first.
Dodged the second.
Cut the third.
Then the fourth struck his shoulder.
He was thrown backward.
He landed heavily.
His feet carved trenches through the stone.
[Damage detected.]
Subin looked at his shoulder.
His armor was damaged.
He smiled.
"Strong."
The creature charged again.
This time, Subin didn't meet it directly.
He moved around it.
The four arms created enormous attack coverage, but their movements weren't truly independent.
They shared one central mana network.
Subin could see it.
Every attack began from the creature's core.
Four paths.
One source.
He watched.
The first arm attacked.
He dodged.
The second followed.
He blocked.
The third came from behind.
He turned.
The fourth swept across the ground.
He jumped.
The creature rotated.
All four arms attacked simultaneously.
Subin's Sword Intent exploded outward.
Seamless Edge.
His sword moved through the smallest opening between the attacks.
He cut the creature's armor.
A deep line appeared.
But the wound closed immediately.
The creature's mana surged.
Its body adapted.
Subin's expression became serious.
"Regeneration."
The creature attacked again.
This time its movements were faster.
It had learned from the previous exchange.
Subin retreated.
The creature pursued.
He changed direction.
It adapted.
He changed again.
It adapted again.
The battle moved across the mountain.
Every collision shattered stone.
The expedition members struggled to keep up.
Kang Min-seok attempted to attack from the side.
One of the creature's arms intercepted him.
His axe collided with the fist.
Kang was thrown nearly thirty meters.
Park Jae-hyun moved to protect him.
"Don't approach it directly!"
Yerin shouted.
The mage began preparing a spell.
The archer fired continuously.
The tank blocked incoming debris.
The team worked together.
But the creature was still gaining ground.
Subin realized something.
It wasn't merely adapting to attacks.
It was adapting to decisions.
Every time someone attacked, it changed its response.
Every time someone defended, it altered its approach.
It was learning the entire team.
Subin's eyes sharpened.
This was different from the wolves.
Different from the A+ Guardian.
This creature wasn't simply reacting.
It was building a combat model.
Subin smiled.
"Then let's give you the wrong one."
He suddenly stopped attacking.
The creature hesitated.
Subin lowered Simple Edge.
Kang stared at him.
"What are you doing?"
"Changing the battle."
Subin turned toward the others.
"Stop attacking."
Yerin understood.
"Everyone, withdraw."
The team immediately retreated.
The creature stood motionless.
For the first time, it didn't know what to do.
There was no attack.
No obvious threat.
No decision to respond to.
Its mana circulation became unstable.
Subin saw the opening.
He stepped forward.
Not toward the creature.
Toward the space beside it.
The creature turned.
Subin stopped.
Then changed direction.
The creature adjusted.
Subin changed again.
The creature adjusted again.
But now the adaptation itself had become predictable.
Subin watched the transitions.
Every correction created another correction.
Every decision forced another decision.
The creature had become trapped in its own adaptability.
Subin's Sword Intent condensed.
His blade moved.
Boundary Cutting.
The sword didn't cut the creature's body.
It cut the relationship between its central mana network and one of its arms.
The fourth arm stopped.
The creature roared.
Subin moved again.
Another cut.
A second connection severed.
Then a third.
The creature's four-arm coordination collapsed.
Its attacks became slower.
Kang Min-seok understood.
"Now!"
The expedition attacked together.
The mage's spell struck its chest.
Park's sword pierced a weak point.
Yerin's spear entered beneath the crystalline armor.
Kang Min-seok's axe smashed its knee.
The creature fell.
Subin stepped forward.
Its core was exposed.
He raised Simple Edge.
One final cut.
The creature collapsed.
[Apex Crystal Titan defeated.]
[Level: 98]
[Rank: A+]
[High-grade Mana Core detected.]
[Purity: 97.2%]
[Stored Mana: 103,840.]
Subin lowered his sword.
The entire mountain became silent.
Then the system appeared.
[Combat Understanding acquired.]
[Adaptive Decision Loop.]
[Understanding: 12%.]
Subin stared at it.
The creature had taught him something important.
Adaptation wasn't automatically strength.
If adaptation happened without independent judgment, it could become predictable.
The strongest adaptation wasn't changing every time the environment changed.
It was knowing when not to change.
The thought connected with what Park had taught him.
Stability.
Continuity.
Choice.
Subin's Sword Intent increased.
[Sword Intent: 87.8% → 89%.]
Then another notification appeared.
[Sword God Class Evolution: 78% → 80%.]
Subin's expression changed.
Two percent again.
He looked at the fallen Apex Crystal Titan.
This wasn't about defeating an A+ monster.
It was about understanding the battle.
His class was responding to his comprehension.
Yerin walked toward him.
"Subin."
He turned.
She looked toward the mountain peak.
"There's something else."
Subin followed her gaze.
The peak was now visible.
The enormous pressure he had sensed earlier was still there.
But it hadn't come from the creature they had just defeated.
That creature had merely been protecting the lower territory.
Something else lived above.
Something stronger.
The researcher checked the instruments.
His face became pale.
"There's a massive mana concentration at the peak."
"How massive?" Yerin asked.
He stared at the readings.
"Beyond the measurable range."
Kang Min-seok looked upward.
"So that's the real apex."
Subin didn't answer.
He simply looked at the mountain.
His grip tightened around Simple Edge.
The expedition had come here to map Blackstone Dungeon.
They had already discovered an enormous ecosystem, multiple A+ monsters, powerful mana resources, and a completely different form of dungeon evolution.
But now they had reached the boundary of an area where even their instruments couldn't determine the strength of what lived there.
Subin smiled.
"Tomorrow."
Yerin looked at him.
"What?"
"We go higher."
She sighed.
"I knew you'd say that."
Subin looked toward the peak.
He wasn't rushing.
He wasn't seeking danger for its own sake.
He simply wanted to see how far this dungeon went.
And if something stronger stood at the top of this territory, then meeting it was another step on his path.
The system appeared one final time.
[Blackstone Dungeon Exploration Progress: 19% → 23%.]
[Sword God Class Evolution: 80%.]
[Current Rank: A.]
[Sword Intent: 89%.]
Subin dismissed the window.
The mountain peak remained ahead.
For now, he would wait.
Tomorrow, he would climb.
