Sword God

172 - The Frozen Sword Citadel

  • Next Chapter

The route toward the Frozen Sword Citadel stretched across a vast frozen valley, disappearing between two mountain ranges that rose like enormous walls on either side of the expedition. Snow continued to fall, but the storm that had surrounded the Guardian's territory was gradually weakening behind them. The change was subtle at first, yet Ara's instruments confirmed what everyone could already feel: the environmental pressure of the region was becoming more stable the farther they moved away from the Guardian's territory.

Subin walked near the front of the group with Yerin beside him, while Jae-hyun, Liu Wei, Ethan, Rafael, Diego, and the rest of the expedition maintained a loose formation behind them. The Frozen Frontier was considerably larger than the first regional map had suggested. The mountains visible from the underground chamber had seemed close, but several hours of travel had barely brought them to the outer edge of the range.

Ara studied the regional map recovered from the Guardian's chamber while walking.

“We need to change how we're approaching this,” she said.

Subin glanced toward her.

“The Citadel?”

“The entire mission.” She enlarged the map on her device. “We entered this dungeon to understand its structure, identify the active regions, determine how the external gates operate, and establish safe routes between Earth and the dungeon. Until now, we've mostly been following whatever path became available. The Citadel changes that.”

Yerin looked at the map.

“Because it is a regional junction?”

Ara nodded. “The map we found beneath the frozen structure showed several major routes converging there. If the World Dungeon is organized around regional junctions, the Citadel may contain the information we need to understand the Frozen Region's connection to the rest of the dungeon.”

Subin considered the route.

“And the new Arctic gate.”

“Exactly. The external gate formed on Earth was connected to this region. If the Citadel controls or monitors the regional network, it may tell us why that location was selected and how the gate's stability is determined.”

Jae-hyun overheard the conversation and joined them.

“So we're not going there because Subin found an ancient sword.”

Subin gave him a brief look.

“We're going because it's part of the mission.”

Jae-hyun smiled. “Good. I was beginning to think every place we discover would somehow be connected to your sword.”

Yerin laughed softly.

“He isn't that predictable.”

Subin ignored them and continued walking.

The distinction mattered. The ancient sword beneath the Guardian's chamber had given him a valuable understanding of Stillness, but he had no intention of allowing every discovery in the dungeon to become a personal inheritance. The expedition had a larger purpose, and the information they obtained had to be useful to everyone on Earth, not only to him.

After several more kilometers, the valley narrowed.

The snow became thinner, revealing dark stone beneath the surface. Strange crystalline formations appeared along the cliffs, but unlike the structures near the Guardian's territory, these crystals were arranged in deliberate patterns. Some formed vertical lines, while others created circles around openings in the mountain.

Ara stopped beside one.

“These aren't natural.”

Rafael looked at the formation. “Another part of the old civilization?”

“Probably. More importantly, they appear to be markers.”

Subin examined the arrangement.

The crystals were positioned at regular intervals.

“They're guiding the route.”

Ara nodded.

“Every marker points toward the same direction.”

The expedition continued.

The markers became more frequent as they approached the mountains. Several abandoned structures appeared along the path, half-buried beneath the snow. Some were small observation posts, while others looked like shelters or supply stations.

The expedition inspected one of them.

Inside were empty storage chambers, broken equipment, and a wall covered with symbols.

Ara scanned the writing.

“This appears to be an old expedition station.”

Jae-hyun looked around.

“They explored this region too?”

“Not necessarily the same way we are,” Ara replied. “But someone was traveling between the regions.”

Subin examined the wall.

A large symbol had been carved above the entrance.

A sword crossing a circular shape.

The same symbol they had seen beneath the frozen structure.

“This symbol marks important locations,” Subin said.

Ara looked at him.

“And the Citadel has the largest version of it.”

That made the destination even more significant.

The expedition moved deeper into the mountains.

The temperature began dropping again.

Yerin pulled her coat tighter around herself.

“Wasn't the environment supposed to stabilize?”

Ara checked her readings.

“The general environmental pressure is stable. This is different.”

“Different how?”

She pointed toward the mountain ahead.

“The mana concentration is increasing.”

Subin felt it as well.

The deeper they went, the denser the mana became. Unlike the wild pressure surrounding the Guardian, this mana felt organized, almost as if it was being drawn toward a particular point.

The route eventually opened into a massive basin.

Everyone stopped.

The Frozen Sword Citadel stood at the far end.

It was enormous.

Unlike the ruined city they had previously explored, the Citadel had not been abandoned to the same degree. Its outer walls were still intact, rising hundreds of meters above the frozen valley. Towers of blue-white crystal extended from the fortress walls, connected by bridges that disappeared into the mountains. A massive gate stood at the center, and above it was the largest sword-and-circle symbol they had encountered so far.

Several smaller structures surrounded the Citadel.

Observation towers.

Storage facilities.

Defensive walls.

Transportation platforms.

The entire complex appeared to have been designed around one purpose.

Maintaining control over the region.

Ara stared at the structure.

“This isn't just a settlement.”

Subin nodded.

“It is a regional center.”

The system confirmed it.

[Regional Structure Detected.]

[Frozen Sword Citadel.]

[Classification: Regional Junction.]

[Connected Internal Routes: 4.]

[External Gate Link: 1.]

[Regional Network Stability: 73%.]

Everyone became more attentive at the final line.

Rafael looked at Ara.

“External Gate Link?”

Ara's eyes narrowed.

“That means the Arctic gate on Earth is connected directly to this region through the Citadel's network.”

Subin looked at the massive fortress.

Now their objective was clear.

The Citadel wasn't merely an interesting location.

It was directly connected to the mission they had been assigned.

They needed to understand this structure.

A low vibration traveled through the valley.

The Citadel's outer towers activated one after another.

Blue light spread across the walls.

Jae-hyun drew his sword.

“Looks like we're not going to walk in.”

Subin looked at the gate.

Several large figures had appeared on the walls.

The system identified them.

[Citadel Guardian — Level 191 — A+]

[Citadel Guardian — Level 196 — A+]

[Citadel Guardian — Level 201 — A+]

Three enormous armored creatures stood above the entrance. Their bodies resembled heavily armored humanoids, but their heads were covered by horned helmets and their weapons were massive two-handed swords.

Ethan studied them.

“They look like soldiers.”

“They probably are,” Subin said.

The Guardians didn't immediately attack.

Instead, the central one raised its sword.

A wave of mana passed through the valley.

The ancient symbol above the gate began glowing.

A system message appeared.

[Regional Authority Recognition Initiated.]

[External Expedition Detected.]

[Purpose Required.]

Ara looked at Subin.

“It isn't asking us to fight.”

Subin stepped forward.

“We are here to investigate the World Dungeon's regional structure, map its connections, and establish a safe understanding of the external gate network.”

The system remained silent for several seconds.

Then the Citadel responded.

The enormous gate opened halfway.

[Purpose Accepted.]

[Temporary Expedition Access Granted.]

Jae-hyun lowered his sword.

“That was easier than expected.”

The three Guardians stepped aside.

Subin glanced at them.

“They weren't protecting the Citadel from everyone.”

Yerin understood.

“They were checking whether we had a legitimate purpose.”

The expedition entered.

The interior of the Citadel was surprisingly orderly.

Unlike the ruined city, there was little debris. The central road remained intact, and several crystal structures continued operating despite the absence of inhabitants. Mana flowed through channels beneath the floor, powering the towers and transportation platforms.

Ara immediately began recording the infrastructure.

“This is much more functional than the city.”

Rafael looked at the walls.

“Which means there may still be useful systems here.”

They reached the central plaza.

A massive structure stood at its center.

It resembled a combination of a tower and a control station, with several circular platforms surrounding a large crystal suspended above the floor.

The system identified it.

[Regional Junction Core.]

[Frozen Region Network Management Structure.]

Subin looked at Ara.

“This is what we came for.”

Ara moved toward the core.

The moment she activated her equipment, the crystal responded.

A map appeared above the platform.

The Frozen Region unfolded in layers.

The Citadel sat near the center.

Four major routes extended from it.

One returned toward the Guardian territory.

Another led toward the mountains.

A third connected to the Volcanic Region.

The fourth extended toward a region marked only by a floating symbol.

Ara's expression changed.

“That's the Floating Region.”

Liu Wei stepped closer.

“So this Citadel connects three environments?”

“Four, if the external gate is included,” Ara said.

Subin studied the map.

The network was much more structured than they had initially believed.

The regions weren't simply placed beside one another.

They were connected through specific junctions.

Each junction appeared to control movement between environments.

Then the Arctic gate appeared on the map.

A thin line connected Earth to the Citadel.

The line fluctuated.

[External Connection Stability: 61%.]

The same value they had seen when the gate formed.

Ara immediately began studying it.

“The gate's stability isn't controlled from Earth.”

“Where is it controlled?” Yerin asked.

Ara pointed at the Citadel.

“Here.”

Subin's expression became serious.

That meant their expedition had just discovered something extremely important.

If the Citadel controlled the connection, then the Arctic gate was not simply a random doorway appearing on Earth.

Its stability was being determined through the World Dungeon's regional network.

A second layer of information appeared.

[External Gate Stabilization Requirement.]

[Regional Junction Core Synchronization Required.]

[Current Synchronization: 18%.]

The same percentage displayed in the ruined city.

Ara immediately connected the information.

“The eighteen percent isn't the dungeon's overall synchronization.”

“What is it?” Rafael asked.

“The connection between the active external gates and the internal regional junctions.”

Subin nodded.

That explained why the value had remained unchanged in the ruined city.

They had not reached the structure responsible for the regional connection.

Now they had.

Yerin looked at Subin.

“If we increase synchronization, can we stabilize the Arctic gate?”

“Possibly.”

Ara shook her head.

“Not just the Arctic gate. Look.”

The map expanded.

Five active regions appeared.

Five external connections began forming around Earth.

Only one was currently stable enough to remain open for an extended period.

The others fluctuated.

Ara's voice became serious.

“If the regional junctions are synchronized, we may be able to stabilize all active external gates.”

Jae-hyun stared at the display.

“That would allow controlled travel between Earth and the dungeon.”

“And that's exactly what the expedition was supposed to determine,” Subin said.

The significance of the discovery settled over the group.

They had entered the World Dungeon expecting to study a dangerous new environment.

They had now found a potential method of making that environment accessible in a controlled manner.

But the system immediately displayed another condition.

[Synchronization cannot proceed.]

[Regional Junction Core Damaged.]

Ara frowned.

“Damaged?”

A section of the map turned red.

The Citadel's eastern route.

The route leading toward the Floating Region.

A second line began flashing.

[Network Disruption Detected.]

[Cause: Regional Junction Damage.]

Subin looked toward the eastern corridor.

“Can we repair it?”

Ara checked the readings.

“We need to reach the damaged junction first.”

“Where?”

She enlarged the map.

A marker appeared deep inside the Frozen Region.

[Secondary Junction: Frostfall Basin.]

[Distance: 184 km.]

[Route Condition: Unstable.]

Yerin looked toward the eastern gate.

“So the Citadel gives us the map, but the network can't be synchronized until we repair the secondary junction.”

Subin nodded.

That was a clear objective.

They had found the regional control center.

They had identified the connection to Earth's Arctic gate.

They had discovered why the synchronization remained low.

And now they had a concrete next destination.

Subin looked at the map once more.

“Then Frostfall Basin is our next mission.”

Before anyone could respond, the Citadel's central crystal suddenly displayed another route.

A second damaged section appeared.

This one was not inside the Frozen Region.

It was far beyond it.

The line connected toward the Volcanic Region.

Ara stared at it.

“There are multiple damaged junctions.”

Subin remained calm.

“We repair them one at a time.”

Jae-hyun smiled.

“So the dungeon expedition just became a repair mission.”

“No,” Subin said, turning toward the eastern passage. “It's still an exploration mission. We're just finally finding out what we're supposed to explore.”

The expedition began preparing for departure.

Outside the Citadel, the Frozen Frontier stretched across hundreds of kilometers of mountains and glaciers. Somewhere beyond the eastern range was Frostfall Basin, a damaged junction that stood between the expedition and a stable connection to the World Dungeon's larger network.

And for the first time since entering the dungeon, their objective was no longer simply to discover what existed inside.

They had found a system that could potentially connect Earth to it.

Now they had to understand how to make that connection safe.
