Sword God
171 - The Guardian of the Frozen Frontier
The roar that came from beyond the frozen chamber was deep enough to shake the entire structure, sending a fine layer of ice cascading from the ceiling. The enormous crystal at the center of the chamber vibrated in response, and the ancient sword sealed within it released another wave of Sword Intent that spread across the floor like an invisible tide. Subin remained in front of the crystal, his hand resting naturally around Simple Edge, while the others formed a defensive position behind him. Nobody needed to be told that the approaching creature was different from the monsters they had encountered outside. The pressure filling the chamber was too dense, and the way the frozen structure itself responded suggested that the creature was not merely another inhabitant of the region. It belonged here.
The entrance exploded inward.
A massive creature forced its way through the stone and ice, its body filling almost the entire passage. It resembled a giant white bear at first glance, but the comparison ended there. Its shoulders were covered in layered plates of dark blue ice, enormous horns curved backward from its skull, and six crystalline growths extended along its spine. Frost constantly formed around its limbs as it moved, while two pale-blue eyes watched the expedition with an intelligence that was far beyond that of an ordinary monster.
The system identified it.
[Frozen Frontier Guardian — Level 214 — A+]
[Regional Guardian Type: Environmental Protector]
[Territory: Frozen Frontier]
The Guardian lowered its head and released another roar.
The chamber temperature dropped sharply.
Yerin immediately felt her movements become heavier. “It's manipulating the environment.”
Ara checked her equipment while stepping backward. “The temperature just dropped another twenty degrees. The creature isn't simply producing cold. It's drawing mana from the entire region.”
Jae-hyun tightened his grip on his sword. “Then we shouldn't let it control the battlefield.”
He moved first.
His sword flashed through the freezing air as he rushed toward the Guardian's left side, using the same aggressive swordsmanship that had made him one of the strongest A-rank swordsmen in the expedition. The Guardian reacted instantly. One enormous foreleg struck the ground, and a wall of ice erupted between them.
Jae-hyun's blade shattered through the wall, but the Guardian was already behind it.
The creature swung its head.
Jae-hyun barely crossed his sword in time.
The impact launched him across the chamber.
Liu Wei moved before Jae-hyun could hit the wall. He stepped into the trajectory and redirected him with his shoulder, allowing both of them to slide across the frozen floor instead of suffering the full impact.
“That thing is fast,” Liu Wei said.
Jae-hyun rose, rubbing his shoulder. “And stronger than anything we've fought since entering this dungeon.”
The Guardian turned toward them.
Subin finally moved.
He crossed the distance with a single burst of speed, Simple Edge cutting toward the creature's shoulder. The Guardian twisted its body, causing the blade to strike one of the crystalline plates covering its side.
The impact produced a sharp metallic sound.
Subin's eyes narrowed.
The crystal had not merely resisted the sword. It had changed its structure at the moment of contact.
The Guardian had adapted the ice around its body to the direction of his attack.
Subin withdrew immediately as a massive claw passed through the space where his head had been.
He landed several meters away and studied the creature.
“It changes its defense based on the attack.”
Ethan's mana sword extended into a long blade. “Then overwhelm it with different attacks.”
“That might work,” Subin replied, “but not if the environment is helping it.”
As if responding to his words, the floor beneath them began changing.
Ice spread outward from the Guardian's feet, covering the chamber in seconds. Thin crystalline pillars rose from the ground, dividing the battlefield into several sections. The temperature continued falling, but the Guardian itself appeared increasingly comfortable.
Ara's expression changed as she examined the readings.
“The creature is connected to the entire region. The chamber is functioning like part of its body.”
Rafael immediately understood. “So damaging the chamber could hurt it?”
“Possibly, but it could also destabilize the entire structure.”
Subin looked toward the ancient frozen sword.
That was not an option.
The sword was embedded inside the crystal, and the expedition had no idea what would happen if the chamber collapsed.
“Keep the fight away from the crystal,” Subin said. “We don't know what the sword is connected to.”
The others spread out.
Yerin moved toward the Guardian's right side while Ethan and Rafael took the left. Liu Wei and Jae-hyun positioned themselves farther back, waiting for openings. Ara remained near the center but continued monitoring the environment.
The Guardian charged.
This time the expedition attacked together.
Yerin's spear struck the creature's foreleg, forcing it to alter its movement. Ethan immediately attacked the exposed side with his mana sword, changing the blade's length halfway through the swing. Rafael intercepted the Guardian's counterattack, his defensive ability absorbing enough force to prevent the creature from reaching Ara.
Jae-hyun entered from behind.
His sword cut through one of the Guardian's crystalline plates.
A crack appeared.
The Guardian roared and swung its body.
Jae-hyun retreated before the tail-like crystalline growths along its back swept through the area.
Liu Wei followed with a precise strike toward the cracked section.
The second impact broke part of the armor.
For the first time, the Guardian stepped backward.
Subin watched carefully.
It wasn't retreating because it was afraid.
It was changing its position.
The ice beneath its feet began glowing.
Subin immediately understood.
“Move!”
The floor erupted.
Dozens of ice spears shot upward.
The team scattered, but the attack covered almost the entire chamber. Ethan was struck in the shoulder and thrown against a pillar, while Rafael shielded Ara from several shards. Yerin used her spear to deflect two before a third struck her leg and forced her down.
Subin's sword moved continuously.
Rather than simply cutting the ice, he changed the angle of each strike so that one cut redirected several incoming shards. The technique was not powerful enough to destroy the entire attack, but it created a narrow safe path through the storm.
He reached Yerin first.
She had already pulled the ice fragment from her leg.
“I'm fine,” she said.
Subin glanced at the wound.
“Stay behind me for a moment.”
Yerin gave him a brief smile despite the pain. “You know I'm not very good at following that instruction.”
“I know.”
The Guardian charged again.
This time Subin didn't meet it directly.
He stepped aside.
The creature's enormous body passed him, and he struck the rear leg with the flat side of Simple Edge rather than the edge itself. The impact shifted the Guardian's balance just enough for Yerin to attack.
Her spear struck the exposed joint.
The Guardian stumbled.
Jae-hyun and Liu Wei attacked simultaneously.
Their swords landed on the damaged crystalline plate.
It shattered.
The Guardian roared and turned violently.
A wave of freezing mana spread through the chamber.
Everyone felt it.
For a brief moment, their bodies became sluggish.
Subin's breathing slowed.
His fingers felt colder around Simple Edge.
The ancient sword inside the crystal responded.
A faint pulse of Sword Intent traveled through the chamber.
Subin stopped.
He had felt this pressure before.
The ancient sword's Sword Intent was not merely strong. It carried a different quality.
It didn't try to overpower the swordsman.
It remained completely still.
The Guardian's roar echoed through the chamber.
Subin suddenly understood the connection.
The creature was controlling the environment by continuously imposing its will upon the surrounding mana.
The ancient sword was doing almost the opposite.
Its Sword Intent remained stable regardless of the environment.
One forced the surroundings to change.
The other refused to be changed by them.
Subin looked at Simple Edge.
He didn't need to imitate the ancient sword.
He needed to understand what the pressure was teaching him.
The Guardian attacked again.
This time Subin waited.
Its claw descended.
At the final moment, he moved.
The attack missed.
He didn't counterattack immediately.
The Guardian swung again.
Subin moved.
Another attack followed.
He moved again.
Instead of fighting the Guardian's strength, he allowed the creature to dictate its own movement while he continuously adjusted his position.
The Guardian's attacks became faster.
Subin's movements became smaller.
The battle changed.
He was no longer trying to cut through the Guardian's defenses.
He was observing how its defenses formed.
Every time the creature changed its body structure, the surrounding ice changed with it. Every attack created a reaction in the environment, and every reaction gave Subin another piece of information.
Then he saw the weakness.
The Guardian's defense was extremely adaptable, but adaptation required a decision.
There was always a tiny delay between the moment Subin changed his intention and the moment the environment responded.
It was less than a fraction of a second.
For most swordsmen, that difference was meaningless.
For Subin, it was enough.
He stepped forward.
The Guardian expected a horizontal cut.
Subin changed his intention.
The blade turned downward.
The Guardian changed its defense.
Subin changed again.
The blade stopped halfway.
The Guardian's defensive crystals formed over the wrong section.
Subin completed the movement.
Simple Edge struck the exposed joint beneath the Guardian's shoulder.
The blade penetrated.
The Guardian staggered.
Subin withdrew immediately before the creature could counterattack.
A system notification appeared.
[Adaptive Environmental Defense observed.]
[External Sword Principle understanding has deepened.]
There was no new skill.
No sudden increase in rank.
Instead, Subin felt something subtle settle into his swordsmanship.
He had spent much of his journey learning how to adapt himself to the opponent.
Now he had encountered something different.
An opponent that adapted the battlefield to itself.
The Guardian charged one final time.
This time Subin didn't retreat.
He moved directly toward it.
The creature raised both forelegs, preparing to crush him beneath its weight.
Subin's Sword Intent spread through Simple Edge.
The surrounding ice trembled.
His sword did not attempt to overpower the Guardian's environmental control.
Instead, his intent established a narrow space around the blade where the surrounding mana could no longer dictate its direction.
The Guardian's claws descended.
Subin stepped through the gap.
Simple Edge passed between the crystalline plates and reached the creature's chest.
He stopped the blade before it reached the core.
The Guardian froze.
For several seconds, neither moved.
Subin looked into its pale-blue eyes.
“You're protecting this place.”
The Guardian remained still.
Behind it, the ancient sword's Sword Intent pulsed once.
The Guardian slowly lowered its head.
The pressure filling the chamber disappeared.
The ice stopped spreading.
Then the creature stepped backward and lowered its body until one knee touched the ground.
Everyone remained silent.
Jae-hyun lowered his sword.
“Did we just win?”
Subin shook his head.
“No.”
He looked toward the ancient frozen sword.
“It decided we weren't a threat.”
The Guardian moved aside.
The path toward the crystal was clear.
Ara immediately began checking the environmental readings.
“The region is stabilizing.”
Rafael looked at the Guardian.
“So it wasn't protecting the sword specifically.”
“Probably not,” Subin said. “It was protecting the territory.”
That distinction mattered.
The ancient sword was not necessarily the reason the Guardian existed.
It was simply something valuable located inside the territory it had been assigned to protect.
Subin approached the frozen crystal.
The ancient Sword Intent became stronger as he drew closer.
This time, however, it did not resist him.
A thin layer of frost spread across the surface of Simple Edge.
The blade remained unchanged.
Subin didn't try to awaken the ancient sword or claim it.
Instead, he placed his hand against the crystal.
A series of images appeared inside his mind.
A swordsman standing in a frozen landscape.
A blade held in one hand.
An army approaching from across the snow.
The swordsman did not charge.
He stood still.
The enemy advanced.
The snowstorm intensified.
The swordsman remained unmoved.
Then he raised his sword.
One strike.
The entire battlefield became silent.
The vision disappeared.
Subin opened his eyes.
The system appeared.
[External Sword Principle observed.]
[Principle Name: Stillness.]
[Effect: Understanding incomplete.]
Subin stared at the notification.
Stillness.
It wasn't the absence of movement.
It was the ability to remain unchanged while everything around you changed.
He looked at Simple Edge.
That principle was completely different from the sword techniques he had learned so far, yet it didn't contradict them.
Flow.
Continuity.
Adaptation.
Choice.
And now Stillness.
They were not separate skills.
They were different ways of understanding the sword.
The ancient sword remained sealed within the crystal.
Subin didn't attempt to remove it.
There was no reason to take a weapon merely because it was powerful. He had Simple Edge, and more importantly, he had gained an understanding that could not be obtained by simply carrying another sword.
Yerin approached quietly.
“You're not taking it?”
Subin shook his head.
“Not yet.”
She smiled. “I thought you'd say that.”
Jae-hyun came over next, looking toward the massive sword.
“I don't understand you. If that thing is as powerful as it feels, why leave it behind?”
“Because I don't know what it is.”
Jae-hyun laughed. “That's a surprisingly sensible answer.”
Subin looked toward the Guardian.
The creature had returned to its original position near the chamber entrance. It was no longer hostile, but it had not left either.
Ara suddenly called everyone over.
“I found something.”
She was standing beside a second section of the chamber wall that had become visible after the Guardian moved.
A map was carved into the ice.
Unlike the maps they had seen in the ruined city, this one showed only the Frozen Region.
Several routes crossed the landscape.
One led back toward the Ruined City.
Another disappeared beneath a mountain range.
A third extended toward an enormous circular structure marked with the same sword symbol.
Ara traced the route.
“That structure is several hundred kilometers from here.”
Subin studied the map.
The system activated.
[Regional Route Identified.]
[Destination: Frozen Sword Citadel.]
[Distance: 327 km.]
[Regional Guardian Territory: Confirmed.]
Yerin looked at the map.
“So the ancient sword here isn't the end of the Frozen Region.”
“No,” Subin said.
He looked toward the distant passage leading deeper into the frozen landscape.
“It was only the first lesson.”
Outside the chamber, the Frozen Frontier continued beneath the red sky, its mountains stretching far beyond what the expedition could see. The Guardian remained behind them, no longer blocking their path, while the newly discovered route toward the Frozen Sword Citadel waited beyond the frozen plains.
The expedition had entered the region searching for information about the World Dungeon.
Now they had something more valuable.
A new direction for Subin's sword path, a stable relationship with the regional guardian, and a concrete destination deeper inside the Frozen Frontier.
Subin sheathed Simple Edge and began walking toward the next passage.
The others followed.
This time, the Guardian did not roar.
It simply watched them leave its territory and continue toward the heart of the frozen region.
