Chapter 105: Chapter 105 – The Calm Ends - Part I

The bedroom door clicked softly shut behind them, sealing Apartment 1101 in silence once more.

For several lingering seconds, none of them moved.

Penelope stood in the hallway with one hand resting against the strap of her backpack. Inside, carefully wrapped between folded clothing and important documents, rested everything they had managed to recover from Emma Sofia Reyes’ short life. A birth certificate. Hospital records. Family photographs. A pregnancy journal. Tiny keepsakes that would mean nothing to a three-month-old baby today...

But perhaps everything to the young woman she would one day become.

Penelope let out a slow breath before turning away from the apartment door.

"We should head back," Erik said quietly.

His voice carried the same calm steadiness it always did, but Penelope noticed the way his eyes lingered on the closed door for a fraction of a second longer than necessary.

Even Erik had been affected.

Kai adjusted the fire axe resting across his shoulder before offering Penelope a small smile.

"I’d say that mission was a success."

She returned the smile, although hers carried a trace of melancholy.

"I think Emma’s mom would be happy knowing someone kept those things."

Kai’s expression softened.

"I hope so."

Without another word, the three of them walked back toward the stairwell.

The heavy fire door opened with its familiar metallic groan before swinging shut behind them.

Immediately, the sounds of the apartment hallway disappeared.

Only the rhythmic echo of their boots accompanied them as they began climbing back toward the twenty-fifth floor.

Unlike their journey down...

No one felt the need to rush.

The mission had been completed.

Emma’s memories were safe.

For now, that was enough.

The stairwell remained just as clean as it had earlier that afternoon.

The concrete walls showed no bloodstains.

No claw marks.

No signs that monsters had ever wandered these steps.

It looked like every luxury apartment stairwell Penelope had ever seen.

Orderly.

Maintained.

Ordinary.

If someone had walked into it without knowing the world outside had ended...

They would have thought it was just another peaceful afternoon.

Kai broke the silence first.

"You know..." he began, his voice echoing softly off the concrete walls. "I keep thinking about something."

Penelope glanced back over her shoulder.

"What is it?"

Kai looked down at the next flight of stairs before answering.

"Emma’s mom."

Neither Penelope nor Erik interrupted him.

"The way she locked Emma inside the bathroom..." Kai continued. "She had to know something was wrong."

Erik climbed another step before speaking.

"I think she did."

Kai frowned thoughtfully.

"You really think she knew she was turning?"

Erik nodded once.

"I do."

His answer was simple.

Certain.

He wasn’t speculating.

He was remembering what they had seen.

The apartment hadn’t looked like the scene of a random attack.

There had been no signs of panic inside the bathroom.

The door had been locked from the outside.

Emma had been protected.

That had required thought.

Decision.

Sacrifice.

Penelope’s fingers unconsciously tightened around the strap of her backpack.

"I’ve been thinking about that too."

Her voice was barely louder than the sound of their footsteps.

"I think..."

She paused briefly, searching for the right words.

"...I think she knew she didn’t have much time left."

Kai looked toward her.

"Then why didn’t she run?"

Penelope’s gaze drifted toward the narrow safety window built into the stairwell wall.

Beyond the reinforced glass, the crimson sun still bathed the city in its unnatural glow.

"Because she was a mother."

Three simple words.

Yet neither man questioned them.

"A parent doesn’t always choose the safest option," Penelope continued softly. "Sometimes..."

A faint smile touched her lips.

"...they choose the option that gives their child the best chance."

Erik remained silent.

Listening.

Remembering.

"I hope..." Kai murmured after a long pause, "...I hope she knew it worked."

Penelope looked down at the backpack resting against her side.

"I think she did."

Her smile carried both sadness and comfort.

"She protected Emma until the very end."

"And now..."

She gently rested her hand against the backpack.

"...we’ll protect the rest."

The conversation faded naturally after that.

Not because there was nothing left to say.

But because each of them had begun reflecting on the woman they had never truly known.

A mother whose name they had learned only minutes ago.

Isabella Reyes.

A woman who had died believing her daughter might never survive.

None of them could change that ending.

But they could honor it.

The climb continued in silence.

The only sounds were the steady rhythm of boots striking concrete and the occasional metallic vibration of the stairwell railing whenever Kai’s fire axe brushed against it.

As they reached the sixteenth-floor landing, Erik slowed.

Not enough for the others to notice immediately.

Just enough that his instincts had time to catch something...

Different.

He stopped beside the fire door without reaching for the handle.

Penelope noticed first.

"What is it?"

Erik didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he tilted his head slightly.

Listening.

Kai frowned.

"You hear something?"

At first...

Nothing.

Then it came.

A distant metallic crash echoed upward through the stairwell.

It wasn’t especially loud.

More like something heavy falling onto concrete several floors below.

The sound lingered for only a moment before disappearing.

Kai looked down through the open center of the stairwell.

"Someone dropped something?"

Erik’s expression remained unreadable.

"Maybe."

He didn’t sound convinced.

The three of them remained where they were for another few seconds.

The building fell silent once again.

Kai let out a quiet breath through his nose.

"I swear this place keeps making me paranoid."

"You should be paranoid," Erik replied evenly as he resumed climbing. "Paranoid people stay alive."

Kai chuckled once.

"I preferred your motivational speeches when they were shorter."

"They usually are."

That earned the faintest smile from Penelope.

It disappeared almost as quickly as it had appeared.

Because another sound drifted up the stairwell.

This time...

It wasn’t metal.

It was glass.

Shattering.

Not a single window.

Several.

The sharp crashes echoed through the concrete shaft one after another before silence reclaimed the building once more.

Erik stopped again.

This time...

He reached for his pistol.

Erik’s fingers settled naturally around the grip of the suppressed pistol holstered against his thigh.

The familiar weight grounded him.

Years of training had taught him to trust his instincts long before his eyes confirmed what his ears had already begun to suspect.

Something had changed.

Beside him, Kai instinctively shifted the fire axe into both hands. The relaxed posture he’d carried since leaving Apartment 1101 disappeared without him consciously realizing it. His shoulders straightened, his gaze sharpened, and every muscle in his body seemed to prepare for whatever might emerge from the floors below.

Penelope quietly rested her right hand against the wrapped handle of the katana hanging from her waist.

She could hear her heartbeat.

Steady.

Measured.

Not from fear...

But anticipation.

The three of them remained completely still.

The stairwell once again fell into silence.

No voices.

No footsteps.
