Chapter 104: Chapter 104: Reclaiming Home

The fire door swung shut behind them with a dull metallic thud.

The sound echoed through the stairwell before fading into silence.

Penelope adjusted the strap securing the katana against her waist before starting down the stairs.

Erik followed close behind.

Kai brought up the rear, the handle of his fire axe resting comfortably against his shoulder.

No one spoke.

There was nothing to say.

Their destination had already been decided.

Apartment 1101.

The rhythmic sound of boots striking concrete filled the otherwise empty stairwell.

One flight.

Then another.

The higher they descended, the colder the air seemed to become.

Not physically...

Emotionally.

The twenty-fifth floor still felt like home.

Every floor below it felt a little less familiar.

A little less safe.

Kai rested one hand along the railing as they continued downward.

"You know..."

His voice was quieter than usual.

"I keep expecting to hear something."

Penelope glanced over her shoulder.

"What?"

"I don’t know."

He frowned.

"Anything."

"A zombie."

"A scream."

"Someone calling for help."

He looked toward the narrow window on the landing.

"It’s just..."

He searched for the right word.

"Empty."

Erik broke the silence.

"The quiet won’t last."

Kai nodded.

"I know."

None of them liked it.

Silence inside a building this large never felt natural.

It felt borrowed.

Eventually...

A black metal plaque came into view.

11

Penelope slowed her pace.

"So far, so good," Kai murmured.

Erik stepped onto the landing first.

His suppressed pistol rested comfortably in his hand.

Not raised.

Simply ready.

His eyes swept the hallway through the narrow window in the fire door.

Nothing.

He reached for the handle.

Click.

The fire door opened.

The hallway beyond was just as quiet as the stairwell.

Luxury carpeting stretched the length of the corridor.

Elegant wall sconces cast warm pools of light across cream-colored walls.

Every apartment door remained shut.

The silence felt almost unnatural.

Penelope immediately recognized the hallway.

Her gaze drifted down the corridor.

Then stopped.

Apartment 1101.

For a moment...

The three of them simply stood there.

No one spoke.

No one needed to.

They all remembered what they had found behind that door.

Erik was the first to move.

He walked forward without hesitation, stopping beside the entrance.

His eyes instinctively scanned the hallway one final time.

Clear.

Penelope stepped beside him.

Her fingers rested lightly against the doorknob.

She drew a slow breath.

"...Let’s bring her home."

Erik gave a single nod.

Kai quietly shifted the fire axe in his hands.

The apartment had already been cleared.

This time...

They weren’t returning to save a life.

They were returning to save its memories.

The apartment was exactly as they had left it.

Silence greeted them the moment they stepped inside.

The furniture remained overturned from the struggle.

Broken picture frames still lay scattered across the living room floor.

A child’s stuffed rabbit rested near the hallway, untouched.

Time had simply...

Stopped.

No one spoke.

Erik quietly moved toward the master bedroom.

Kai headed for the second bedroom, checking closets and drawers one by one.

Penelope lingered in the living room.

Her eyes slowly swept across the apartment.

Photographs decorated nearly every shelf.

A young couple smiling at the beach.

The same couple standing in front of a Christmas tree.

Another picture...

A heavily pregnant woman laughing as someone behind the camera captured the moment.

Penelope carefully picked up one of the frames.

Dust clung to the glass.

She gently wiped it away with her sleeve.

"...She looked happy."

Kai glanced over from the hallway.

"You think we’ll find it?"

Penelope didn’t have to ask what he meant.

"The birth certificate?"

Kai nodded.

"And anything else."

She looked back at the photograph in her hands.

"I hope so."

Her thumb brushed lightly over the smiling woman’s face.

"My aunt never threw anything away."

Kai paused his search.

"What?"

"My parents’ photographs."

A faint smile appeared on Penelope’s face.

"My birthday cards."

"My mom’s necklace."

"My dad’s watch."

She carefully returned the frame to the shelf exactly where she’d found it.

"When I was little..."

"...I used to think Aunt Mary was just sentimental."

A soft laugh escaped her.

"But now I understand."

Erik quietly continued opening drawers in the bedroom, listening without interrupting.

"She wanted you to remember them," Kai said.

Penelope nodded.

"She wanted me to know they existed."

She walked toward another bookshelf.

This one held a small collection of baby books.

A pregnancy journal.

An unopened package of milestone cards.

Everything had been lovingly arranged.

"I never felt like I had to choose."

She smiled softly.

"I loved my parents."

"And I loved you Rykers."

"There was never a difference."

Erik looked up from the bedroom doorway.

"And you want that for Aurora."

Penelope met his eyes.

"Yes."

She picked up the pregnancy journal, carefully flipping through its pages.

"I don’t want her to grow up believing she has to forget her mother just because she’ll have us."

Her voice remained quiet.

Almost reverent.

"Her mother loved her."

"We witnessed how immense her love for her daughter was"

Kai looked around the apartment.

Every cupboard stocked with baby formula.

Boxes of diapers stacked neatly against one wall.

A tiny crib carefully assembled beside the parents’ bed.

The woman had been preparing for her daughter.

Until the very end.

"I hope we find pictures," Kai said quietly.

Penelope smiled.

"So do I."

Silence settled over the apartment once more.

Not the silence of death.

But of remembrance.

Each of them resumed searching.

Not for supplies.

Not for valuables.

But for the pieces of a little girl’s story.

Every Item they found was being placed in the space.

The apartment had been searched twice over.

The living room.

The kitchen.

The nursery.

Every cabinet.

Every shelf.

Every folder they could find.

Nothing.

Kai let out a slow breath as he closed another empty drawer.

"I was really hoping it’d be easy."

"So was I," Penelope admitted.

Erik remained silent.

He stood in the doorway of the master bedroom, slowly scanning the room one last time.

Something...

Didn’t feel finished.

His eyes swept over the neatly made bed.

The wardrobe.

The dresser.

Then...

The nightstand.

One drawer sat slightly open.

Barely an inch.

Just enough to catch his attention.

Without a word, Erik walked over.

He wrapped his fingers around the handle and slowly pulled it open.

Inside...

Everything had been carefully organized.

A wallet.

A wedding ring box.

A few receipts.

A small velvet jewelry pouch.

Beneath them rested a clear plastic document envelope.

Erik carefully lifted it out.

The transparent cover revealed several neatly stacked documents.

Medical records.

Vaccination paperwork.

Insurance forms.

And finally...

A single sheet bearing the official seal.

Penelope’s breath caught.

"...Erik."

He carefully slid the paper free.

Name:

Emma Sofia Reyes

Date of Birth:

XX/XX/XXXX

Mother:

Isabella Reyes

Father:

Daniel Reyes

Silence filled the room.

Kai quietly walked over, reading the document over Erik’s shoulder.

"So..."

He smiled softly.

"Her name was Emma."

Penelope gently accepted the certificate from Erik.

Her fingertips brushed lightly across the printed name.

For a long moment...

No one spoke.

Finally...

She smiled.

A small...

Bittersweet smile.

"She has a beautiful name."

Carefully, Penelope returned the birth certificate to the protective sleeve before placing it inside her backpack.

"We’ll keep it safe."

Erik quietly returned the remaining documents to the envelope.

"Take everything."

Penelope nodded.

"Everything."

If Aurora ever wanted answers...

She deserved to have them.

Kai gently closed the drawer.

His eyes drifted toward the framed wedding photograph resting on top of the nightstand.

A young couple smiled back at him.

Happy.

Unaware of the future waiting for them.

He carefully picked up the photograph.

"I think..."

He looked toward Penelope.

"...she’d want this too."

Penelope looked at the picture for several seconds before nodding.

"Yeah."

"I think she would."

Kai slipped the frame into a padded section of his backpack before zipping it closed.

The apartment had given them everything they came for.

Not supplies.

Not weapons.

Not valuables.

Something far more precious.

The first pieces...

Of Emma Sofia Reyes’ story.

Outside the bedroom...

The hallway remained silent.

The world had already moved on.

But inside Apartment 1101...

A little girl’s past had just been given a future.
