Super Soldier in the City
Chapter 2734 - 2796: Big Shot
So she was a little displeased. She could understand that Brother Hu’s past couldn’t be changed, but she still hoped he could avoid those people from his past. She didn’t even really want Brother Hu’s underlings to show up at the wedding. Of course that was unavoidable, especially since he and his guys were now business partners—how could she possibly say they couldn’t come? That would be a bit too unreasonable.
So Wang Yaxin still asked, "Brother Hu, your boss? I’ve never heard you mention him. Where is he now, is he in business too?"
"My boss? Haha, his business is big-time. It’s not that I didn’t want to tell you, it’s that I wasn’t sure he could make it to our wedding, so I just didn’t say anything. Now it’s confirmed—just now I called my boss, and the moment he heard I was getting married, he immediately agreed to come. Wife, I’m so happy, haha!" Brother Hu was a little beside himself, waving his hands excitedly. Li Yifei was the man who had literally changed his whole life. For him to come to the wedding and witness Brother Hu’s transformation, that was just the best thing imaginable.
Wang Yaxin’s brows couldn’t help but knit tighter. Clearly, the more excited Brother Hu acted, the more unhappy she felt, since the man’s identity was unknown.
"Brother Hu, your boss... what does he actually do? At our wedding, all the guests are just regular people. If some really big shot shows up, I’m afraid it won’t be appropriate. How about this: you talk to your boss, and after the wedding we thank him separately?" Wang Yaxin probed. There was nothing wrong with what she said, but the usually good-tempered Brother Hu suddenly got upset. He hardened his expression and said, "Yaxin, about other things I won’t say much, but when it comes to my boss, you have to listen to me, and you have to respect him. Without him there wouldn’t be the me you see today!"
Wang Yaxin was pushed back by that, and said, "Still, you can’t just let anyone come. Brother Hu, the people attending the wedding are all relatives and friends. If something happens..."
"I understand what you mean, but I also hope you can understand me. My stance is, as long as my boss can come to the wedding, it doesn’t matter if anyone else doesn’t. It’s fine if no one else comes. I, Huzi, don’t need them to show up just to give me face."
Once he said that, things froze up. The official wedding was the day after tomorrow, and to have a scene like this right now was hard for Wang Yaxin to accept, especially with Brother Hu, who had always been gentle and understood her, suddenly acting overbearing and unreasonable. It was inevitable she got angry.
Her parents quickly found out what had happened and called Brother Hu to ask what was going on. Brother Hu’s attitude softened; he took the initiative to explain.
Her parents pressed him on who exactly this person was that could make Brother Hu take it so seriously, even to the point of arguing with Wang Yaxin over it. Brother Hu pondered for a moment and said, "Dad, Mom, it’s not that I don’t want to say, it’s just... I hope you can be mentally prepared!"
"Is it the Provincial Governor coming? And you still need us to be prepared? All right, Huzi, just tell us. If it’s a big shot coming, we’ll just make sure to treat him well. But Yaxin’s worries aren’t from a bad place. She heard you talk about your boss and assumed he was a guy from the streets, so she didn’t really want you to have too much contact with your old crowd. You can understand that, right?" Wang Yaxin’s father said.
Understand? Of course he understood. Brother Hu was still feeling a bit annoyed, but he also knew Wang Yaxin came from a proper family and really didn’t want any ties to the Underworld. So he said, "Actually, there’s nothing much to hide. Here’s the thing: my family’s from Mile City, right? Back in the day I was kind of a jerk, not much of a good person. But after I took a few hits in Mile City, I came to the provincial capital to try my luck!"
"That... as long as you’ve changed, you’re a good kid. You’re doing very well now—her mom and I are both very satisfied. So we hope you’ll only get better from here. If you two live a good life, the kids won’t be any trouble either, don’t you think?"
"Well, there’s a reason behind it. I got schooled by a big shot—back then he wasn’t a big shot yet," Brother Hu said.
"You offended some leader?"
"Someone more powerful than a leader, Dad. I won’t keep you in suspense. That man is Li Yifei!" Brother Hu said.
"Li Yifei? That name sounds familiar!" Wang Yaxin’s mother muttered on the side. Then she saw the old man’s whole body jolt, his eyes go wide, and his grip on the phone tighten. It took several seconds before he shouted, "You mean Li Yifei? The Li Yifei who’s the richest man in Ning Province?"
Brother Hu heard that and knew they were stunned. He said, "Yeah, that richest-man Li Yifei, also from Mile City. Back then I offended him and he gave me a serious lesson."
"You offended him?" Wang Yaxin’s mother finally processed it. Their family was just ordinary people—maybe they had two apartments, not much in savings. But the moment they heard Brother Hu had offended Li Yifei, the old couple almost blurted out that the wedding was off. Of course, that was just a flash thought. It showed how powerful those three words ’Li Yifei’ had become, deeply imprinted in ordinary people’s minds.
"I did offend him, but then he told me to come to the provincial capital and develop myself. Um, you could say I’m his underling, so the ’boss’ I mentioned is actually Li Yifei, the richest man in Ning Province." Brother Hu didn’t want the old couple to keep spiraling in their thoughts, so he hurried to reveal the whole story.
"You mean... how is that possible? He... he’s the richest man, and you... you used to be in the Underworld, and he took you on as an underling?"
"Probably his only underling, too. This isn’t something I can explain clearly in a few words, but I’m not lying. When Boss comes the day after tomorrow, you’ll see for yourselves!" Brother Hu said.
"No, no, hold on. You’re sure Li Yifei is really coming?" Wang Yaxin’s father asked.
"He’ll definitely come, as long as nothing unexpected happens, like some kind of war. Boss has always been a man of his word!" Brother Hu said through gritted teeth.
"This is huge. I... Huzi, with that kind of identity, why didn’t you say so earlier!" Wang Yaxin’s father complained, then thought about how, once this matter came out, his son-in-law’s status would shoot up. Being the underling of the richest man in Ning Province—that’s not something just anyone can pull off. So he quickly added, "I’m not blaming you, it’s just... something like this should have been said earlier. No need to let Yaxin misunderstand you, and for you two to end up upset with each other."
"Dad, it’s not that I didn’t want to say it. It’s just... even if I did, you might not have believed me. I don’t have any proof. Only when Boss confirmed he was coming would I say it. And as for me being his underling, there’s practically no one who knows about it!" Brother Hu explained, while thinking to himself that the people who did know weren’t from the same world as them—they were all big shots. So was there any need to talk about it?
Thinking of that, Brother Hu went on more directly, "Honestly, I hadn’t really expected him to come. I just asked on a whim. To be blunt, as an underling I haven’t done a very good job, and I don’t even know whether he acknowledges me or not!"
"You kid... sigh, we really misunderstood you. We thought you still wanted to keep in touch with those people from the streets. But Huzi, Yaxin’s also doing it for your own good. Don’t hold it against her. I’ll talk it over with her mom later and we’ll explain it to her, have her apologize to you," Wang Yaxin’s father said.
Brother Hu hurriedly said, "Apologize for what? No need. I understand Yaxin. I just hope she can trust me. We’re getting married, we’ve already got the marriage certificate—we’re legally husband and wife now, and in a few months the baby will be born. We have to trust each other. We can’t get that angry over something so small. It’s bad for the baby and bad for her health."
Over the phone, Wang Yaxin’s parents nodded repeatedly and also felt their daughter’s reaction was over the top. After hanging up, the old couple sat in silence for a moment, then both their faces broke into smiles as they said, "Our daughter... hit the jackpot? We thought Huzi wasn’t quite good enough for her, but it turns out he really has turned his life around and is doing something proper now. His business is already pretty big and will only get better. Our daughter’s future is solid. And now it turns out he and Li Yifei have this whole story between them. This kid... if he had ridden on Li Yifei’s fame, his business would probably already be worth billions by now."
"Billions? Do you know how many people have gotten rich off the Li family? How many billionaires there are? And he’s Li Yifei’s underling—that’s some next-level status. I’m telling you, even the number one and number two leaders in the province have to look at Li Yifei differently and treat him as an honored guest. With our son-in-law having this kind of relationship with Li Yifei... yeah, Huzi’s character is really solid. He’s never once flaunted this connection, so everything he has now he built on his own. That kind of steadiness is worth trusting." As he spoke, Wang Yaxin’s father slapped his hand and said, "Let’s explain it to our daughter first. Huzi said she doesn’t need to apologize, but this apology still needs to be made. She can act cute to smooth things over, but Huzi’s not empty-headed—this isn’t something you can just giggle your way past. She should apologize properly!"
"You talk to her. Start by explaining clearly, don’t be too harsh," Wang Yaxin’s mother nudged her husband and said.
They got her on the phone, and just like them, after Wang Yaxin heard the whole story she was obviously stunned. She subconsciously whispered Li Yifei’s name. The female doctor sitting across from her immediately lifted her head and looked at Wang Yaxin, curiosity written all over her face, wondering why she suddenly said those three words.
"Dad, Mom, I get it. I’ll call Brother Hu later and apologize!" Wang Yaxin said, steadying her mood.
"Good. Just remember your attitude. Between husband and wife, it’s important to admit when you’re wrong. But Huzi also said he understands you meant well. He knows you’re doing it for his own good, and that it was his failure to explain clearly that made you misunderstand. He doesn’t actually need you to apologize. But your mom and I think your attitude still needs to be right. As for the details, you two can talk it out yourselves!" Wang Yaxin’s mother said.
Wang Yaxin nodded, hung up, and sat there dazed for a while. If the female doctor across from her hadn’t called her name, she probably would have kept spacing out.
"Yaxin, what’s wrong? Did something happen at home? You got like this right after you answered the phone," the female doctor asked with concern.
"Little Nan, you’re sure you want to be my bridesmaid, right?" Wang Yaxin came back to herself and asked.
"Ah? Of course. Didn’t you say you needed four bridesmaids? I’ve never been one before."
"Haha, you’re going to remember it for the rest of your life! This time, your male god is coming to the wedding."
