Chapter 1497: Chapter 1487: Vigilance
Then, shadows moved, entering the room from the cave, and he went up directly from the first-floor stairs to the fifth floor, secretly observing the stairs but found no one, then proceeded directly to Jiang Cheng’s house door.
He placed his hand on the handle, gently turned it, but the door was locked, it wouldn’t turn. He then pulled out a device from his pocket, placed it on the lock at the door, connected to his phone. Operating continuously on his phone, he finally heard a faint tick sound, small, yet in the ink dark night, it was sharp.
This man quickly pressed his ear to the door to listen for a while, hearing no activity inside the room. A sinister smile appeared on his face, a smile only he understood, others couldn’t see clearly because his face was covered, leaving only his eyes visible.
He slowly turned the handle, the door slowly opened, he stepped quietly inside, first checking the bed, finding no one, then turned his head to discover the bathroom light was on, and heard the sound of water running, indicating someone was bathing.
He kicked open the door, fired several shots at the bathtub, and immediately turned away, knowing after these shots, the person inside would surely be dead. The dark-clothed figure came and left quickly.
Crouched on the bathroom ceiling, Jiang Cheng wanted to chase the dark-clothed figure but discovered his body was completely exposed, without any clothing, preventing him from pursuit.
It turned out Jiang Cheng had been bathing, but suddenly sensed a chilling presence, shivering violently, a natural reflex signaling imminent danger.
He listened intently, noticing disturbances at the entrance, then looked up discovering the bathroom ceiling was wooden.
Jiang Cheng used his hands to open the ceiling and rushed up, quietly restoring the wooden panel to its original state. Hardly had he done that when someone barged in, firing shots at the bathtub.
Fortunately for Jiang Cheng, his premonition, his sixth sense saved him once again. Jiang Cheng climbed down from the ceiling, jumped back into the bathroom, now drained of water which had flowed out through the bullet holes.
Jiang Cheng realized he wouldn’t have the chance to continue his bath, dressed in his nightwear, and went to check the lock at the door, everything seemed normal. Jiang Cheng took a glass from the table, filled it with water, and placed it above the door handle; earlier on, he had neglected to do this, otherwise, the masked person wouldn’t have gotten in as the sound of the cup dropping and shattering would have scared him away.
Jiang Cheng settled everything neatly, went to his arranged bed, lay down, and fell asleep. Strangely enough, the night passed safely without incidents. Jiang Cheng woke early, looked outside the window to see the sun shining brightly after the rain, a sunny day.
Jiang Cheng left the hotel, found a restaurant for breakfast, which was quite plentiful with porridge, steamed buns, tofu pudding, fried dough sticks, and other side dishes.
Jiang Cheng ordered a cup of soybean milk and four fried dough sticks, began eating, knowing he was headed into danger again, so he needed to eat well to have the strength for battles ahead, aware that at times, circumstances would prevent eating for days, hence must eat well whenever possible.
After eating his fill, Jiang Cheng went to the basement, took a flashlight, meticulously checked the car, especially the engine and the brake discs; once everything was fine, he got into the car.
Indeed, Jiang Cheng inspected the corners more carefully, fearing someone might plant bombs or sabotage the car; considering they certainly knew where he lived, they’d know about his car.
But ultimately, he found nothing, which made Jiang Cheng smile wryly, realizing they were overly confident, thinking those few shots had resolved him, hence didn’t bother tampering with the car.
Jiang Cheng started the car, drove out of the basement, the car ran smoothly, and soon reached the highway; like yesterday, he accelerated the car to a high speed.
Jiang Cheng was anxious inside, worried whether Mu Yu’s body could endure being kidnapped so soon after surgery; those enemies wouldn’t care whether her body could handle it.
After driving for a while, Jiang Cheng exited the highway; he couldn’t reach that place by highway, needed to take rural roads, a slope road where conditions were very poor.
Driving slowly along the bumpy road, he suddenly saw a person lying on it, causing Jiang Cheng to stop the car.
He didn’t immediately get out nor step out of the car, lighting a cigarette instead, smoked while observing the reaction of the person lying on the ground, who lay there unmoving, with no response from the surroundings either.
As he finished smoking, the person on the ground got up, walked toward Jiang Cheng’s car, and Jiang Cheng suddenly recognized these eyes as those belonging to the person who shot in his room the previous day, yet pretended not to know and watched the other’s reaction.
After the man got into the car, he glanced at Jiang Cheng inside. From the previous assassination attempt, he knew the person in front of him was certainly not easy to deal with, as before he’d even made a move, this person had sensed his presence or knew he was being targeted for assassination.
Although he wasn’t some world-class assassin, his skill was above average, remaining exceedingly alert even during such intense relaxation as bathing. No doubt, the person he faced closely approached world-class prowess.
"I am the one who attempted to assassinate you last night." The quiet atmosphere was suddenly shattered, the man said, contemplating that given Jiang Cheng’s observation ability and vigilance, they’d already met last night, even though he had been masked.
But to someone with sharp observation and vigilance, he was surely recognized, and Jiang Cheng didn’t expect this person to voluntarily reveal his identity, assuming the one attempting to assassinate him would keep it hidden.
"Aren’t you afraid I’ll kill you directly? You should know you just threatened my life, and I won’t allow a threat to linger nearby," Jiang Cheng said, ever-ready to restrain the man should he make any move.
The assassin looked at Jiang Cheng and said, "I know you wouldn’t easily trust me, but I hope you’ll hear my explanation."
Jiang Cheng nodded slightly, signaling the man to continue. Seeing Jiang Cheng allowed him to explain, the man immediately said, "My codename is Mole, I was ordered by the higher-ups to assassinate you, but now my mission has failed, so I must escape."
"Escape? Why do you need to escape? Shouldn’t you call reinforcements to continue your assassination?" Jiang Cheng heard Mole’s words with some doubt, becoming even more vigilant toward this self-claimed Mole.
