Sunblind Serpent: The Zodiac Without A House
Chapter 125: A Newborn World I
The first door opened hundreds of kilometers from Linden.
Marek did not see it directly. Less than half an hour after the twelve arrival sites formed, every working screen inside the shelter changed to the same government feed. The television near the registration tables lost its local emergency bulletin, a portable monitor beside the medical station went black, and several phones switched over seconds later.
Nobody knew who had taken control over the broadcast, but that stopped mattering once the picture steadied.
An empty airfield filled the screens. Military vehicles surrounded one end of the runway, with soldiers positioned behind temporary barriers and every visible weapon aimed toward the red House road suspended above the concrete.
People inside the shelter crowded closer.
Those who could not see the television used their phones instead, and even the civilians still outside had begun gathering near the entrance to watch through windows or listen to the speakers.
At the far end of the runway, the Aries road descended toward a bright opening. Its ivory-white surface remained visible beyond it, but the crest traveling along the road burned deep red.
The opening widened without an explosion.
Another place simply became visible through it.
A stone platform stretched beyond the threshold beneath a dark red sky. Structures stood farther behind it, though distortion around the edges prevented the cameras from holding their shapes clearly. Then a woman in overlapping dark armor stepped through, carrying no visible weapon. She looked majestic, just like how female heroes had always been described in books.
Her Aries Mark burned red along her forearm, its lines continuing across her wrist and onto the back of her hand.
She placed her other hand over the Mark at her wrist.
A red Aries symbol flared across the concrete in front of her, expanding until its outer lines stopped several meters short of the soldiers. Then, they saw her open her mouth.
"Representative of House Aries. Voice delegated. Authority limited by mandate. I enter without claim of conquest."
Several rifles lowered slightly. However, nobody lowered their guard.
Beside Marek, Rhovan gave a small nod. "Hmm."
Kellan glanced at him. "You expected a problem?"
"I expected them to state the limits before someone mistook an arrival for a claim. It’s usually like that, but in this case, perhaps because of the presence of the twelve houses, they did not do it."
Kellan looked at the military line surrounding the road, then back at the representative. However, he kept his mouth shut.
The broadcast divided before Marek could ask anything else.
A second window showed a government compound where the rain-softened yard had been sinking since Day 367. The Taurus door had formed directly above the damaged ground, and before the waiting officials decided how close they were willing to stand, the soil beneath it compressed into a stable platform.
A broad man in gray robes crossed through and immediately crouched.
He crouched and pressed his palm into the mud. The ground around the retaining wall compacted almost immediately, squeezing water from the soil as the softened earth beneath its base hardened and rose just enough to support it. The wall shifted back several centimeters with a low grinding sound, then held.
A shallow groove opened through the mud beside the building, giving the pooled water somewhere else to go. It began draining away from the foundation instead of collecting against it.
The representative stood once the ground stopped moving.
"Representative of House Taurus. Voice delegated. Authority limited by mandate. I enter without territorial claim."
Dario folded his arms. "At least he handled the wall before he started talking."
Marek did not answer him and continued to focus on the TV screen visible through the window of the shelter.
House Gemini’s arrival occupied two enclosed courtyards of the same government complex. A silver opening appeared in each, several hundred meters apart, and the same woman stepped through both.
For several seconds, neither looked like a copy.
One greeted officials near a fountain while the other crossed a tiled courtyard toward a separate reception line. Their pale coats matched down to the folds around their sleeves, but their movements were different enough that both appeared completely independent.
Nadia leaned forward. "Which one is her?"
Eight seconds after the crossing, one camera flickered.
When the image returned, that courtyard was empty except for the officials who had been standing there. Several were looking around as if somebody had vanished between one frame and the next. On the other feed, the Gemini representative continued speaking without interruption.
Nadia narrowed her eyes. "I hate that."
Marek remembered Venielle making the same distinction during Mara’s training: source and copy were easy words until Gemini stopped letting you tell which was which.
The Cancer representative arrived inside a stadium that had been converted into temporary housing for displaced families. Local officials had cleared the marked section of the field before the door opened, but whatever came through with her reached much farther than the prepared boundary.
People in different seating sections began turning almost together.
A woman on the lower level stood so quickly that the blanket across her lap dropped to the floor. Several sections away, a boy pushed between rows of chairs toward the railing and started shouting a name.
Others followed.
Volunteers understood what was happening before the cameras did. Separated relatives were finding one another across the stadium, some already moving toward the stairways connecting different sections.
The Cancer representative made no claim over any of it. She introduced herself under a limited humanitarian mandate and requested permission to work with Earth’s existing reunion services rather than replace them.
Leo chose a balcony above a city square.
Its representative waited until local authorities confirmed the streets below had been cleared before crossing. He wore white-gold formal clothing and carried no visible weapon or escort.
Warm light gathered around the balcony after his arrival, sharpening the scene enough that distant cameras captured details they should have struggled to focus on. People standing nearby kept turning toward him even while others spoke.
Rhovan watched more carefully than he had for the previous representatives.
"House Leo. Voice delegated. Authority limited by mandate. I enter to coordinate, not to command this world."
Marek glanced sideways. "He had to specify that."
Rhovan looked at him briefly but did not argue.
