Chapter 535 Three Groups
“Oh, shit. I know it’s been going too smoothly.” Nathan turned around while gritting his teeth. ‘I should inform the others, but how? If I go back, I can only enter one of them. No, if I spread my familiars, I can enter several of them at the same time, but it won’t be all.
‘If I don’t give this information, we will end up facing a problem much bigger than we originally expected.
‘Should we give up? But it will give the aliens time to realize everything, including the plan to fight against us.
‘We can’t give up, but we can’t continue without doing anything.’ Nathan gritted his teeth. There was only one thing to do.
He immediately ordered in a low voice, “Captain. Slow down the march. I will have to adjust the plan if these tunnels are actually heading to a different place. We can’t stop, but you have to buy us some time. It’s fine if we don’t end up getting a little out of sync with the rest of the people as long as we can get…like a few hours.”
“Understood. Are you going back?”
“Yes. I’m the fastest one, so I will go there. Two hours… No, one hour… I will try to return within an hour.”
“Yes, sir.” The captain nodded.
After giving his order, Nathan hurriedly rushed back, passing all the soldiers that were supposed to head into the alien territory.
It caused confusion, but the captain actually changed the pace of the march gradually. He only had to make the people in the front slow down. They had listened to Anubis, so it couldn’t be helped. As long as the information didn’t travel to the entire group, the situation was still under control.
On the other hand, Nathan summoned Fenrir, who was faster than him. He thought about flying, but Jinwu could only use his Battle Form to bring him and the tunnel wasn’t big enough to accommodate him. The same applied to Nidhogg.
Hence, the only person who was fast enough was Fenrir.
It took Nathan ten minutes to cross the distance between him and the entrance. In the end, they were marching with normal human walking speed, so the distance wasn’t too far for Fenrir’s full speed.
“I’m out.” Nathan turned around, looking at the tunnel that the war minister took.
“W-What? An enemy attack?”
“No. That’s a summoner…”
Nathan looked at the soldiers and shouted, “I don’t have time. An urgent situation comes up. Send your fastest horse to all tunnels and tell them to slow down right now. Have all their main summoners return to the base for a reassignment. I will go to the war minister personally.”
After saying those words, Nathan just took off into the tunnel.
“This…”
“What is happening?”
“Are we going to follow his decision?”
“We do. He might be young, but he’s the one with the minister the most.”
The soldiers nodded as they immediately sent forth messengers. The reserve army was getting ready as well, in case something went wrong.
Meanwhile, Nathan caused a commotion in the war minister’s tunnel.
“Minister Matthew. This is Nathan. I need to talk!”
“What?”
“A summoner coming from behind us?”
“What happens?”
The soldiers were startled as they instinctively raised their swords against Nathan, thinking he was a threat.
Fortunately, they were inside a tunnel. His voice echoed through the tunnel and reached Matthew’s ears just fine. He hurriedly passed the rest of the soldiers and waved his hand at the soldiers in the back. “I’m here. Calm down.”
Nathan nodded and got off from Fenrir. He whispered, “The tunnels are actually going to a different location.”
“!!!” Matthew’s expression turned grim. “What did you say?”
Fenrir actually confirmed it. “Yes. I can actually hear the volume of the footsteps coming from both the left and the right decreasing. However, they don’t seem to be having a different destination entirely.
“From what I can hear, there are three groups of tunnels. Five tunnels are going straight. The other two sides have four tunnels each. I’m assuming they are only leading you to three destinations.”
“Even so…” Matthew gritted his teeth. The fact they had a different destination meant they couldn’t concentrate on their force anymore.
Even if they had to split the summoners, it would be troublesome if an elite class appeared. After all, they might not be as rare as they were before the volcanic eruption anymore.
“Are we going to abandon the mission?” Matthew gritted his teeth.
“We can’t abandon the mission. If we abandon it, the tunnel will become their weapon. We can try to hold them here, but unless we can create a fort to defend this tunnel, it will be useless. Burying the tunnel from this spot is meaningless because the alien can dig it again. And it won’t take long.
“In addition, the fact that we have found out about this will force the aliens to rethink their approach. After that, they will become even more unpredictable.”
“I know that.” Matthew gritted his teeth. “It’s just a bit too risky if we keep going.”
“Then how about splitting the group into three? You are the strongest, so you can go alone. The commander’s strength is similar to yours and the vice commander can assist him. Meanwhile, I will lead the others to the last path.”
“That’s…” Matthew couldn’t answer immediately. It looked reasonable at first, but the risk was simply too high.
“I should have thought about this. I’m sorry. I should have known that there’s no way they will only have one nest. It will become too crowded for the aliens. In fact, the other two might be leading somewhere not far from the left side of our frontline as well as the right side of the Liaystian Kingdom’s base.
“If it’s necessary, we will retreat to the base after finding it, gaining their cooperation. After that, we will work on how to deal with them. What do you think?” Read exclusive content at empire
Matthew bit his lips. The situation had just become more complex than what they originally discussed, so even Nathan couldn’t predict Matthew’s decision at this point.
