Chapter 1305: Relationship
Chapter 1305: Relationship
Nathan and Evelyn were sitting on a rock, overlooking the city from far away.
“You know…” Evelyn looked up. “When I lived there, I always accepted my fate that I would end up marrying someone to advance the family’s position.
“But my talent allowed me to refuse that fate. I might be luckier than most people, but I worked hard instead of taking it for granted.
“At one point, I couldn’t help but wonder what I was actually working hard for. Was it to avoid the arranged marriage?
“Maybe, but people would marry at some point in their lives. Living alone might be an option, but I knew I wasn’t the kind of person who could do it. If not, I wouldn’t even let Bella near me.
“Hence, I questioned myself again, why did I work hard? Do you know what my answer was back then?”
Nathan simply remained silent as Evelyn answered it herself.
“My answer was nothing. I couldn’t find any reason to become stronger. To be able to escape my fate? Not really. It was not fate, but a natural order.
“Marry someone I love? I had never found such a person in the past, not even the slightest feeling… I thought I might not have a heart.
“Waiting for something that might not even come… I couldn’t do it. I distracted myself with something else… and that was the people around me, who somehow appeared out of nowhere.
“Or I might have been questioning myself so much that I didn’t realize they had been around me the whole time.
“I put my efforts into helping the people around me, thinking I might find my purpose soon. Although it was confusing at some point, I started to change. I cared about the people around me. Bella, Melissa, Vivian, and even Jay.
“I thought I might actually have a heart. I was just too busy chasing after power that I never had time to listen to it.
“At some point, I believed that I had finally found the place I belonged. Even my family started to support me, even though they had their own target.
“That was why when I found out that I was nothing more than a tool, it broke me. I thought I had a place in this world, but it turned out I never had one. The only place that once hosted me had vanished after that banquet.
“I was angry at my parents and maybe at myself as well. I had been focusing on other things, not realizing what actually mattered to me.”
Evelyn closed her eyes. Nathan could feel that she worded it this way not to show everything she had gone through this far. She might not tell him the whole truth, but Nathan could feel her emotions.
Disappointment, anger, anguish… he could feel it. She had lost her way without even realizing it. When she was about to find it, the bloody banquet occurred and her parents cut off the road.
So, she was left again on an empty road without knowing which one was the correct path. In addition, she was fighting for her life, making her unable to think of anything else.
“But I guess I could find it now…” Evelyn looked down. “Now that my mind is clear, I can finally see it. When you asked me to let you join the Sleeping Garden, I thought you were cheeky and wanted to break your pride first so that I could turn you into a member of the Sleeping Garden.
“I was wrong. You were like a storm. You destroyed my perspective but, at the same time, lifted me up into the sky. I could see everything around me clearly thanks to you.
“It might be the reason that I never did anything to you whenever you teased me or something. The heart that had once stopped had begun to beat again.
“At one point, I started to question myself as to whether this heartbeat was actually the answer to the question that I once had.
“The answer was… no. You were not like that. Do you know about horse blinders? That was what humans used to make horses look straight and not get distracted by everything around them.
“That horse… was like me. I never lost. I simply put on those blinders unknowingly. And you… you were the one that took off those blinders for me, allowing me to see the things I had this whole time. I just never looked at them.
“That’s why I’m grateful to you. Thank you for everything, Nathan. Without you, I might end up living my whole life without knowing anything.”
Nathan didn’t know what to say. Their gazes locked on each other. Ultimately, Nathan turned his gaze to the sky. “You’re welcome…”
Evelyn smiled. She lowered her vision for a moment, looking at his hand.
There was a bit of hesitation, but she couldn’t help wanting to try it. This time, it would be different.
She sneaked her hand beneath Nathan’s hand and held it tight.
“!!!” Nathan was startled. He checked his hand first before raising his head, finding Evelyn smiling.
“Thanks to you, I’m able to see what matters around me. It’s just… Can you wait a bit longer? I want to put everything behind so that I can finally move forward.”
Nathan smiled back and held her hand as well. “I won’t be satisfied with just taking off your ’blinders,’ you know that, right? I want to accompany you moving forward.”
“This is a bit embarrassing to say this.” Evelyn scratched the back of her head.
“Don’t worry, it makes the two of us.” Nathan chuckled.
Evelyn chuckled before saying, “Still, I’m glad that it’s you.”
Nathan wanted to say the same, but looking at her face, or specifically, her hair, he stopped. “Still…”
Nathan reached out for her hair as if it were a problem.
Evelyn understood Nathan even without a word. “Whenever I used my power, my hair would turn pale white like this. Maybe I would never get my blond hair back, but I think I’m happier this way. This is also proof that you are with me… the best birthday ever.”
Nathan’s expression melted.
Their faces were already close after Evelyn showed her hair, but after what she said, their faces became even closer.
Evelyn might ask him to wait until they could defeat the Death Society, and Nathan didn’t plan to force her either.
But both of them understood each other that even though there might still be a fence between them, no one could say anything if they just climbed it to meet each other.
